I don't have enough thumbs for this..What a master Piece...Salieri was a great composer!! Amadeus movie gave him a bad rep....but he actually helped Mozart's son getting him educated in music !!

That was a brilliant singing of this terrifying aria. Chapeau, Signora Rancatore.

(Continued from below) With that said, Rancatore definitely gave an impressive performance of an extremely difficult aria, and she completely deserved the big ovation and shouts of "brava". Rancatore delivered the coloratura with considerable accuracy and panache, although a few sixteenth notes were uneven at certain points.

Il titolo dell’aria è “Quando più irato freme, quando minaccia il mar”.. La Rancatore ha certamente una tecnica personale che negli anni non si è rivelata essere solidissima e molto spesso indubbiamente la sua intonazione è precaria ed il passaggio agli acuti estremamente difficoltoso. Bisogna però notare, per quanto non sia la voce del secolo, una grande serietà, un’ottima musicalità, cosa non sempre presente in cantanti che si dedicano a questo repertorio, ed inoltre un coraggio spiccato.. eseguire un’opera con queste difficoltà a 27 anni alla Scala non è da tutti...è bene ricordare che Diana Damrau (nel cast) ha quasi 10 anni di esperienza in più.

I don't understand why Milos Forman in the Amadeus film confirmed Salieri 's tunes were out and lacked of popularity in its days. This opera Europa Riconosciuta has lovely arias imposible to resist to any person.

Es una ópera llena de virtuosismo, belleza y dinamismo. Sin duda nos muestra el auténtico carácter de la música de Salieri y junto con "La Grotta di Trofonio" podrían ser las mejores óperas de Salieri.

No point in comparing a live performance with a studio recording especially between two different singers and pitches Listen to Fleming's Borgia at Scala or Carnegie and then her Bel Canto cd. live she can't say one single word during the vocalises and in studio it's all perfect. In studio takes there's no anxiety, arias can be stopped and taken again, you're not carrying costumes nor acting much etc This is a fiendish aria and anyone that gets through it must be admired and praised

As for the discrepancy in pitch between Ranctore's and Damrau's recordings, that is because Damrau sang with a period instrument ensemble. They tuned to the pitch of Mozart's era, which was generally about a quarter tone lower than today's standard pitch.

Salieri was one of Beethoven's teachers. And it's not a surprise knowing his works

I agree with you... I wonder if she will have this great easy high notes in the future. I think she has a VERY big voce. Everything is difficult for a big voice. It's not Dessay's instrument, so it will be not the same way. I wish her the best, because she sings like a great artist!!! :o)

I agree that Damrau's performance of this aria is even more impressive than Rancatore's. Damrau takes a faster tempo (which may be due to the conductor's choice and the fact that was recorded in a studio) and is even more accurate in the fioritura. Rancatore doesn't quite have the tonal control that Damrau does, as the former's voice has a tendency to become hard and brittle.

No.. you aren´t the only one. I didn´t know her. Just found her here tonight by coincidence and loved her. Then started to look at other videos 1 or 2 years later and heard exactly what you hear. I realized that from the beginning. She moves too much, she uses her whole body to produce her sound and she uses her jaw. Love her and really hope for her make it. But she has it sometimes... in the very top. Damn it!

They did not sing the same part in this opera ! But I have a preference for Diana too. But Desiree is a fantastic singer too.

she is superb, but nonetheless I prefer Damrau's version on her CD becuz of the grace, & sheer agility with she carried her voice around, even more so spectacular! due to a purer, younger, silvery timbre & thus lighter voice, I appreciate purer, white, yet elegant soud like Damrau's, soon we could see a rounded top; i would have to say damrau's tone is very crystal-clear very much like a young Edita Gruberova, wih a subtle hint of; as far as textures, shading & speed-harmonics very 'dessayish'

In her 'Arie Di Bravura' cd, Damrau actually sings this aria half tone (if I m not wrong, could be more) lower than Rancatore here. Which is the right version?

ecco un altra prodezza della nostra grande Desirèe Rancatore...quest'aria è micidiale,e nessun soprano avrebbe potuto eseguirla meglio di lei...adoro la Dessay,ma a mio avviso il colore,il timbro e la tecnica della nostra Desirèe sono più eccellenti(prova ne è che la Dessay è già stata operata 2 volte alle corde,poverina...).Grande Desirèe!!

I totally agree... It was very noticeable in those Olympia clips, compared to Sumi Jo and Dessay. And, again, compared to them,--I know it's so unfair--her voice sounded least flexible. Just by hearing, I would've never guessed she was the youngest of the three, certainly not Sumi Jo as the eldest of the three. Even here, her semiquavers sound somewhat effortful. But really, no doubt that this is a spectacular singing.

actually you mean E6 & F6! [the E5&F5 or fifth octave area is the mainly the domain of middle tessitura of soprano; but higher end of the register-range for lower voices: contraltos & tenors [recall: MIDDLE C5, hence tenor C] & soprano 'high' C is C6 [which a coloratura mezzos like Genaux, Bartoli, & DiDonato can sing up to!]

quanta invidia, se la Rancatore è li a cantare in Europa riconosciuta è perché l'ha voluta il Maestro Muti, sarà stato rincoglionito anche lui???? NON CREDO PROPRIO...e poi per questo ruolo ha fatto prima un'audizione col MAessssccchhtro il quale dopo aver cantato le ha chiesto se voleva fare il ruolo di Semele o di Europa e lei umilmente ha scelto Semele e non la protagonista

e tu ascolta la Damrau nella sua aria dal vivo ;) non paragonare una performance dal vivo con una in studio di registrazione.

diciamo che tra la Damrau e lei non so chi sia peggio...la prima è sfiatata da morire e questa non sa proprio cosa sia il canto legato, e la voce è troppo piccola per il ruolo, infatti è un urlo unico.

La voce c'é e nulla le si può dire ma non é assolutamente adatta al ruolo. Riduce l'impeto di Salieri a una lagna fischiante. Che palle la Rancatore!

Non si puo' sentire....una voce praticamente inesistente, i sovracuti sono "arrancati" ad ha inoltre un pessimo controllo del fiato......come si e' ridotta La Scala...........

Inascoltabile sembra un fischietto di plastica in regalo in una confezione di merendine. Completamente assente il gusto per il canto. Mamma mia che vergogna

Non ha alcun fluidità ed è costretta a spezzare il fiato il cinguettii di sovracuti fastidiosi. . Nessuna presenza scenica.

Brava cantante ,ma non perfetta nell'intenzione e precisione ,la tecnica è carente ,qui sostenuta dall'età e la professionalità indiscusse .I movimenti del corpo non sono interpretazione ,ma disturbo all'ascolto.
