Quaife LSD Upgrade // E86 Z4 Coupe Road & Track Project

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The first installment and most important upgrade for any non-M BMW, an LSD!
In this vid we have a Quaife ATB LSD fitted by the experts at Birds BMW, who are the UK distributor for Quaife products.
It's a transformational modification and I would gladly recommend both Quaife and Birds to anyone that will listen. These cars really should have come with an LSD from the factory! ☺️

This video reminded me that I need an LSD for my coupe. I just ordered a Wavetrac and I'm excited to get it installed. I don't expect it to be very noticeable on the street, because I have too much grip with 255 square, but it should make a big difference on the track.

Superb, it will make a lovely difference to the way the car drives, especially getting on to the throttle, even when not grip limited it improves the attitude of the car no end so you feel much better connected and have it respond as you want. I’ve not driven mine on track yet, notable the limits of grip on the road, but I feel the benefits of the diff each drive. 😊

A very nice in-depth review which I’ve always considered and now you have really got me thinking so I shall now be looking into getting one myself something I’ve always considered 👍🏾

Glad to help, thanks for the feedback! 👍 Often think they go under-appreciated, especially in today's Instagram world where there's nothing to take a picture of for your significant outlay.... all that really matters is the drive though. 😊

Quick one on ATB diffs Matt. If you lift a wheel it isn't one wheel drive, it's ZERO wheel drive. Yep, that's the downfall of ATBs. I remember doing it in an S2000 pulling out of a steep junction - went to give it some pulling off and lost all drive whilst hitting the rev limiter. Thought I'd blown the diff, but not so. Obviously when you're racing and curb hopping, the tenth is worth having and you'll change the diff every other race. I'm like you - geared ATB is warrantied for the life of the car by Quaife. Track wise, you might notice it at Anglesey coming through School on the turn into Rocket. However, you can take a differing line to mitigate :) Wavetrac supposedly combines the best of both worlds by allowing lock with hop. Will has one in his Cayman, but not sure whether he has bounced it yet ;) The ONLY other negative about LSD/ATBs is they can cause a car to push between the balance point of differential wheel speed and lockup. Lotus and McLaren have always resisted fitting based on this. Personally, I think it's because they were cheap and their race cars always had them which says all you need to know. Anyway, enjoyed watching and looking forward to the next one!

Moment of inertia dictates the reason mid engines don’t always have a lsd/atb. The weight distribution and effect of rotation around the centre of inertia are why front engine rear drive cars benefit from an atb/lsd. Most cars traction control will sort out the wheel in the air problem. But if you have a rear wheel drive car that regularly cocks it’s leg you should address the suspension as it doesn’t have enough travel and isn’t going to put with any type of diff.

@@Simb-l I've had several mid engined cars and the lack of LSD is EXTREMELY notcieable. I agree with you that FR/FF is worse without an LSD. Yes, some cars have an electronic LSD, but if you're on track, the traction is off anyway. As for cocking the rear, it can happen and no suspension will counter certain curbs/roads.

LSD for the win but what about RWD open diff or FWD open diff on track?
