Funny thing is I was telling my class about how I’m moving to Qatar and that locals pronounce it similar to guitar. One kid calls out and says they must have lots of guitars there. Now they’re all convinced the country is full of guitars 🤦‍♂️

Very cool and fun video. Growing up, my best friend was part Arab (dad was from Iraq) and he had family from Qatar and Jordan. I used to love the way his dad said "Burger King" and "Whopper". I am good with accents and he used to get a kick out of asking me to impersonate the way he pronounced things. Fun note: His favorite insult was "Stupid dummy".

In the late 70's I had trouble making a phone call to Qatar. I had to teach the operator how to spell it because in English the rule is "U" after "Q". She was looking for QUATAR and was telling me there was no such country. After spelling Qatar for her three or four times she finally put my call through. How things have changed.

Finding that people have trouble pronouncing your name is absolutely not something connected with moving to the USA. That would have happened if you had moved to Canada, Egypt, China, Paraguay, Monaco, or pretty much any country on Earth. It's a beautiful name, and I appreciate how you say that you don't get upset when people don't know how to pronounce it the way that you do. It's also important to point out that there are at least three different ways to pronounce it in Gaeilge. 😀

In the past, I dated this guy that had a cousin he introduced me to, and I hung out with her several times. He pronounced her name as An-NO-Shaw. Later, some of his other relatives asked me if I knew one of their cousin whose name they pronounced as Oh-Knee-Sha. I said I didn't know her. One day, after hanging out with my boyfriend, his brothers, and this girl cousin, an uncle of theirs came by and he asked me if I met Oh-knee-sha yet. I said no. Then one of my boyfriend's brothers said: "What are you talking about? You've hung out with her all afternoon!" It wasn't until then, that it I finally realized that they were all talking about the same cousin, but they just had different ways of pronouncing her name. LOL

Thank you for this video. You are right, and right not just in one way but in many different ways. That's partly because there are different ways pronounce the name of this country even in Arabic as you point out. That loud mouth in the clip near the beginning shouting and then saying that it needs to be pronounced with an emphasis on the first syllable, but in his pronunciation he clearly emphasizes the second syllable is just priceless. Somebody who spends so much effort shouting that loudly has very little energy left over for actually thinking clearly. You did an excellent job though.

the main issue is that the Arabic alphabet, while similar to the Latin alphabet in sounds, is not exactly similar, so letters are pronounced very slightly differently (then there are local differences in each country). In English also there's a tendency to have several sounds for consonants as in THe and THatcher (different sounds but written with same letters).

@@acasualviewer5861 For me at least…the main issue isnt about to try fix the right pronunciation and to sound similar…it actually is about those peeps who don’t even try to make the effort bcs they think it isn’t necessary (for various reasons) at all. But thanks a lot for the quick response & explanation…I really appreciate it. 😊 Have a good night.✨
