Funny thing is I was telling my class about how I’m moving to Qatar and that locals pronounce it similar to guitar. One kid calls out and says they must have lots of guitars there. Now they’re all convinced the country is full of guitars 🤦♂️

Very cool and fun video. Growing up, my best friend was part Arab (dad was from Iraq) and he had family from Qatar and Jordan. I used to love the way his dad said "Burger King" and "Whopper". I am good with accents and he used to get a kick out of asking me to impersonate the way he pronounced things. Fun note: His favorite insult was "Stupid dummy".

That last bit is super important. Japan & China are not the names their inhabitants use, but it's the American word for them. It's good to diversify, but also good to study why & how languages get isolated & come up with their own words.

@@reknakfarg7252 These words are not created from American English, but it's the words Americans use, to be specific. Americans don't say Nihon or Zhanghua.
Just got back from Qatar bro and this is the best explanation I've found. I exclusive referred to Qatar as "this beautiful country" which worked out fine 😅

Thank you! Here in Canada, when I first heard it in the news, they were saying kaTAR. Then we didn't hear about it for a while, and when it was talked about again, everyone was calling it Cutter.
In the late 70's I had trouble making a phone call to Qatar. I had to teach the operator how to spell it because in English the rule is "U" after "Q". She was looking for QUATAR and was telling me there was no such country. After spelling Qatar for her three or four times she finally put my call through. How things have changed.
I'm working on a deposition, and since the question of pronunciation has come up so many times, I Googled, and you're what I got. Glad I got you! You're hilarious, snarky without resorting to foul language, and efficiently informative. Muchísimas!
Thank you thank you! Also love your sense of humour on this, guys! I hate sounding ignorant about other countries.
Finally. My love and gratitude for this video is beyond expression. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
I love it! Thanks صديق. So amazing listening to 'professional announcers' say cutter, gutter, etc.
That was reallllly great! I have had a look at the different people pronouncing this online teaching people badly and wrong in the most officially wrong way. This from you is more reassuring as I must record something with Qatar and will opt for the sound of GIHDDARRH(works for me to remember the sounds in my head). Thank you again!!!
Mr Q is quite entertaining and funny. Really enjoyed this!
This is GREAT stuff! Love it Mr. Q!
Thank you for this light-hearted and humorous video on how to pronounce your Qatar correctly. Much appreciated!
This dude is CLASSIC!! Thumbs up mate! And he speaks absolutely perfect English. But the walk off is frickin hilarious.
Wow, so my mum was pronouncing Qatar correctly the whole time. She says GI-tah, only reason is because in the Fijian language (we're Fijian) we pronounce our Qs like G's. Very interesting
Dude. Nice video, you really covered it. Thanks.

You Rock Mr Q! Moving to and living in the states with a name like Siobhan (pronounced Shivaughn) and though I do forgive everyone for getting it wrong, I very much appreciate the correct pronunciation of my name, which mostly only happens when I am in Ireland. Shukran Mr. Q!

Finding that people have trouble pronouncing your name is absolutely not something connected with moving to the USA. That would have happened if you had moved to Canada, Egypt, China, Paraguay, Monaco, or pretty much any country on Earth. It's a beautiful name, and I appreciate how you say that you don't get upset when people don't know how to pronounce it the way that you do. It's also important to point out that there are at least three different ways to pronounce it in Gaeilge. 😀
"we're all respecting eachother, but NO" is such a mood
Oh my gosh. Just "discovered" you. loved it. whatafind. adorable, great personal presentation style, thanks.
Either way, what I know for sure is...I love Qatar! ♥️
In the past, I dated this guy that had a cousin he introduced me to, and I hung out with her several times. He pronounced her name as An-NO-Shaw. Later, some of his other relatives asked me if I knew one of their cousin whose name they pronounced as Oh-Knee-Sha. I said I didn't know her. One day, after hanging out with my boyfriend, his brothers, and this girl cousin, an uncle of theirs came by and he asked me if I met Oh-knee-sha yet. I said no. Then one of my boyfriend's brothers said: "What are you talking about? You've hung out with her all afternoon!" It wasn't until then, that it I finally realized that they were all talking about the same cousin, but they just had different ways of pronouncing her name. LOL

Best thing I’ve learned on youtube! Thank you!
Hilarious and informative. Thanks for this most helpful guide.
I finally found it. I have a little trouble because I’m not used to rolling R’s, but I think I pronounce it well enough now. Thank you for clarifying
I was never this confused after watching a pronunciation video
Love this channel. Looking forward to way more content now that I've moved to Doha! Shukran brothah!
How Qatar is pronounced: قطر How english pronounce it: كتر
This was wonderful- thank you!
Lol this guy is awesome! So glad I found his channel.
Fun video! My first visit to Qatar was during the summer, really enjoyed it!
Thank you for clarification!🤗🤗
thanks for the vid! I'm sure your channel must be blowing up right now, see you in Qatar!
Thank you so much for this!!! I was told several pronunciations and they all felt wrong. Now I can talk about moving there to others and pronounce it correctly. After some practice of course 😅

Except that this notion of "pronouncing it correctly" is rather complicated. The local pronunciation is different from that in fuṣḥá, also called Modern Standard Arabic.
Thank you for this video. You are right, and right not just in one way but in many different ways. That's partly because there are different ways pronounce the name of this country even in Arabic as you point out. That loud mouth in the clip near the beginning shouting and then saying that it needs to be pronounced with an emphasis on the first syllable, but in his pronunciation he clearly emphasizes the second syllable is just priceless. Somebody who spends so much effort shouting that loudly has very little energy left over for actually thinking clearly. You did an excellent job though.
Thanks for the commonsense explanation the ammerican kudder is a real wind up to me
If the choice is between "kah-tar" or "gua-tar" (i can't do the proper Q/K mixed sound), which do you prefer? Would you rather I just said "kah-tar", or do you prefer the G, even if the rest of the sounds don't come out like they would from a native arabic speaker?

Qataris will not get offended, we know it’s confusing that’s why we have the international friendly pronunciation kaatar (the same way Qatar airways pronounces it).
Thank you. Well done!
Man, I love your attitude and your way of explaining your native language to those of us who have no clue. Thank you for clarifying this pronunciation conundrum! May peace be with you!
Thanks so much from a native, this was soooo helpful, so Kuh turrh!
Thanks for this. I need to do an English voiceover and correctly pronounce Qatar.
Thank you for the heads up! We homeschool so we REALLY wanted to know!!! Gtrrrr
Sounds like the sound the cat makes when she’s all happy. Guatarrr
Nice touch to add the Bill and Ted guitar clip. 😁
An obscure 3-year old video that I had to watch now, in 2022.

Great video...with a lovely Qatari sense of humour thrown in...made me smile...
Very helpful.. Thanks
You are extremely charismatic! Great video! I thought to myself, "why is this video 4 minutes long? Just tell me how to say Qatar! But then I watched the whole video!
Thank you so much!

Dude, Thanks bro.

Awesome presentation
Good video. Thanks for sharing.
Hey thanks for this!
I'm checking this just after an English class. I speak Spanish and I just made a mess of pronunciation 🤣. It's good to listen how to pronounce Qatar by someone from there actually 😃
SO FUNNY. Great Video
Thanks👍
right at the end he shows where all countries speak their own way when they’re naming other countries. I just wanted to know the difference between Qatar rhyming with guitar or cutter?
Dear Mr Q I love your videos 📹 😍 ♥ it is fascinating and fabulous im learning so much about Qatar 🇶🇦 my daughter lives there with her husband I've been there it so beautiful and the people are beautiful nice and clean i absolutely love it some day I want to live there thank you so much for your kind words
“Gih’tarlrl” got it. Thanks!
Thanks brotha!
So it's Cat-R? I was confused when F1 went there because I had always been saying cutter.
I really like how they say america.
😁 funny and you made my day bro 😂
I am usually saying since childhood कतर only as u say but sometimes कतार...as most westerners do....
It was amazing video
I just listened to an NPR report (on a US general accused of illegally lobbying the US government for Qatar) in which the NPR correspondent got it perfectly, I think she watched your "tutorial", and the guy she was interviewing insisted on kuh-TAR. It was funny hearing the two pronunciations in their back-and-forth conversation.

Thank you Mr.Q for the heads up.. ❤❤❤ Found a job there and My bosses will be delighted if I pronounced the name of your beloved country properly.😁
I always felt like Cutter sounded wrong. But thanks for clearing that up. Funny thing , when searching for the pronunciation, the #niceonebro came up in the results. I avoided it and went to yours lol.
Loved this video. Very important with the World Cup coming up. Question though. In the proper pronunciation it appears that you "roll" the "r" sound. Is that accurate?

Oh thank god….finally someone who does a decent explanation on this issue! 🤩👍🏻 The ignorance of so many (and don’t get me started bcs those are usually the ones who go crazy when one false pronounces their country🤪)…the discussions I had about the importance to pronounce - when possible - things/names/places right … so…thanks for sharing & enlighten us! 🎉
@acasualviewer5861
Жыл бұрын
the main issue is that the Arabic alphabet, while similar to the Latin alphabet in sounds, is not exactly similar, so letters are pronounced very slightly differently (then there are local differences in each country). In English also there's a tendency to have several sounds for consonants as in THe and THatcher (different sounds but written with same letters).
@MrsMeOnYouTube

@@acasualviewer5861 For me at least…the main issue isnt about to try fix the right pronunciation and to sound similar…it actually is about those peeps who don’t even try to make the effort bcs they think it isn’t necessary (for various reasons) at all. But thanks a lot for the quick response & explanation…I really appreciate it. 😊 Have a good night.✨
I was watching a local newscast about the World Cup, and the anchor pronounced it "kuh-TAR," and I thought, "No, that's wrong! It's 'Kuh-ter!" But I was dubious, so I had a look. Thank you for making this very informative, VERY funny video!
My friend and I were just discussing this. 😄
Good one 😆👌🏼
