QMX,Fldigi, RTTY: how to configure it right and get those DX contacts!

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

QMX Ham Radio transceiver by QRP Labs is very good in working CW and FT8. Did you know it’s capable of doing RTTY also - the next most popular and one of the oldest digital modes?
This video is to help you in configuring your QMX transceiver and your PC for succesful work together with the Fldigi software, which especially goes good together with the small-screen laptop PCs.
QMX has got a lot of in common with anther QRP Labs radio- the QDX digital transceiver. Here is the link to my another video which may provide you with more info on Fldigi and QRP Labs radios.

Linas, thanks for the video! If I were to name as my honorary Elmer, it’d be you! We both have the same operating style. QRP Labs has earned my business seven times… seven transceivers. The QCX Mini’s (20, 30 & 40 meters), the QDX (Hi & 2 Lo’s), and the QMX… I love them all! I have my QMX kit all up and running. Mated with a 12v 3aH TalentCell, all velcro’d together. A Palm Pico is velcro’d below the BNC on the battery. I use a K6ARK EFλ/2 wire antenna. Typically I use FT8CN on my Android Cell, just as you’ve demonstrated. I’ve yet to use it on RTTY… Thanks again Lynas. 72 de W7UDT

Labas, Linas! I am a new subscriber, heard your interview on QSO Today. Both my parents were born in LT but left as young kids during WW2 and immigrated to the US as teenagers. I'm around five years older than you and grew up on the other side of the Iron Curtain than you did, but also started with amateur radio as a teenager and am still doing it all these years later. I'm wondering, did you operate during the days of the Woodpecker? Maybe you have a video on that on your channel already? If not, maybe a short video on it? Would be interesting to hear about how you and fellow hams in occupied LT felt about it, how you dealt with it, etc. It was damn loud here, was it damn loud there? We had guessed where it was coming from and guessed what it was doing but were not sure. Was it ever explained to you or did you know not to ask? PS: Me and my mom visited Vilnius in 2022. It was my first time. I hope to do it again soon! Everything was wonderful, especially the food! Would love to see a museum or other place where they have some of the gear you grew up using.

Ačiū/thank you, Davetronics! Very nice to hear about your roots! We, Lithuanians, have some one million-people-large diaspora worldwide, with majority residing in the US, historically, also in Ireland and Norway, in modern days. As it comes to Woodpecker, yes, I remember this weird sound on the lower bands, but I couldn’t say it would have killed all my activities on HF. We’ve been making contacts, taking parts in the contests with no particular problems. May be, we were just so used to total jamming on brodcast SW bands, so that amateur SW bands were looking comparatively quite :). From what I know, the highest activity of this soviet monster was in the years before 1980, with gradual phasing out later during ninties. And I got my license in 1980… Another thought, the Woodpecker was located in Ukraine with its antennas beaming West, I suppose , so it may be that its signals were not that strong in our part of Europe, which is North-East. Yet another thing, soviets had a huge radio intelligence unit located in the middle of Lithuania, with huge antenna fields, thousands of military and civilian workers, like interpreters, etc. They’ve been listening to everythign and anything transmitted on any frequency in the West and then analysing this intelligence data. So it would have been only logical for them to not jam this centre with the Woodpecker’s signal. But that’s just my own thoughts, I have no in-depth knowledge on that. Regarding the soviet military equipment, the best exposition I saw ever , was in Friedrichshafen Ham Radio Expo flee-market, in Germany :) Sometimes, it is still possible to find some piece of this equipment in local hamfests/flee markets in Lithuania or other EU countries. Very few people actually use it for their daily ham radio activities anymore. There is a Radio Museum in Šiauliai town in Lithuania, an interesting spot to visit, but I don’t know if they got any of this specific gear. Thanks again for your comment and sharing your memories with us! Enjoy your future trips to your parents’ land! 73! Linas LY2H

@@Linas_LY2H Thanks for the interesting reply! Re: Woodpecker: All your replies make sense. My first license was around 1978 and I started listening a year or two earlier so it was quite active when I was beginning, but for you, you were outside its radiation pattern and it was not as active. Re: Old equipment, Radio Museum in Šiauliai: I hope to return to LT and if so I will look for that. I also hope to go to Friedrichshafen some time too! My mom has a friend in Šiauliai so we got to know the town a little bit, and as a tourist I was very impressed by the Hill of Crosses. 73 OM! Dave

@@Linas_LY2HThat is a good video, I am not too much of a FT8 fan though, I built a kit for FT8 from QRPGuys and I think that I spent more time building it than operating it... I find it a bit dull to only click on premade messages. Even if I do a couple of contests per year, I prefer contacts that require to be a bit more proactive. I found JS8call interesting though and I think that I will try to use fldigi when I find some time.

Hello OM! Sorry for that … Basically, as long as you know how to switch to the Digital mode on the QMX, there is no other critical settings preventing you from going FT8 or RTTY, factory defaults should do. The QMX’s digital part is identical to the QDX transceiver, so I have another video where some internal settings of the QDX are discussed in the context of the RTTY mode. @@jomckarth4836 No, I have not. As far as I know, the QDX can not support VARA, as QDX is NOT a SSB radio, instead, it generates a unique Single Signal which can be used for FSK modes only. This theory of operation is well described in the QDX manual. The QMX transceiver , in its digital part, is the same as QDX, so it should not support multitone VARA too. It's just my opinion based on what I know at this moment :) 73! Linas LY2H
