If you go to 17:05 in this video you will hear that the word 'thousand' has been spliced in, presumably because Stephen Fry mispronounced the actual number during recording. It happens during a cutaway to Allan. I noticed it because I was listening through headphones and because the word was clearly obtained from a different recording. Please like this comment: if it goes to a million I will be the next QI host and perhaps my life will finally mean something. Thank you.

The largest (heaviest) flying bird today is the Kori Bustard (Ardeotis kori) of Africa, males weigh about 18kg, females about half that. The largest bird ever to fly were the Teratorns (a type of Condor), the largest of which, Argentavis magnificens, had a wingspan of 3 metres, and weighed 120kg. Swans? What?

Well done, you failed to use google! While the QI elves could have stood to mention the Kori Bustard, there are two issues First off, males are not about 18kg on average, they are closer to 10. Their maximum size in exceptional specimens is about 20kg Mute swans average about 12, with exceptional specimens growing up to a maximum weight of about 23kg Second, this show was recorded in earlier days of information technology. After 10 years, any information should be taken with a grain of salt, so to show such rage at a small, debatable inaccuracy is simply childish. It would also do you well not to muddy the waters by mentioning extinct birds, which was not something mentioned in the fact. I can only hope you've grown as a person and learned how to actually study information since you posted this comment 3 years ago. Googling and using the highlighted extract is not research. It would seem the QI elves knew that, where you did not.

Technically, the "l" isn't silent, but "tl" is a single consonant in Nahuatl. It's a lateral affricate. And "aguacate" iteslf comes from the Nahuatl "ahuacatl," which ends with the same sound, and means "testicle."

Romans performed censuses (censi?) BUT they were regional, not worldwide I think is the point. Plus, the Augustan censuses were of Roman *citizens*, which the Jews weren't (hence why they could be crucified). Josephus also contradicts the Biblical account, because he dates his census to 6/7 AD, nearly 20 years AFTER the reign of Herod the Great. I think there's consensus that, whatever the Hebrew laws, Joseph was a citizen of Galilee and wasn't relevant to a never recorded census of Judea.

Interesting, never really knew the linguistics behind it only at a superficial level. I always ask linguists and Latin Americanists but no one seems to know, perhaps as there is no known reason why.
@mordirit8727

Sadly, the answer will probably forever be unknown. Though much more recent, we have no records of that word's past, instead it being the root from which we understand words that followed it; in that way, "teotl" counts for us the same way dewós from the Proto Indo European root: we know it means "god", but where it came from? Nobody knows really, we can only use it to track the words that came from it.

What would be the point on a census if you had to go somewhere else to so it? You’d just be asking for irrelevant data. Better and easier to try and keep proper birth and death records. But then again, that’s easy to say in hindsight. The Roman Empire didn’t have that advantage. 😅
@mordirit8727
4 жыл бұрын
They had the second best tool for hindsight: they weren't huge idiots like Luke's author hoped people reading the Bible would be. Roman censuses *did* take into account where people lived. The Roman Empire was *gigantic* and Rome was an international capital; any story you read about the society in Rome will quickly begin talking about people from Hispania, Africa, Brittain, Gaul, Germania... Imagine the utter chaos that would ensue if someone with no brains went "okay, everyone back home to take a census of our population!"; massive groups of their society would have to spend *months* en route to their birthplace. Imagine a doctor going "well miss Augustina, you're due in a month... But alas, I have to travel back to fucking Africa to tell the Emperor where I was born, so I'll be gone for the next six months, so both you and your child will die, good luck have fun"
