Good review, thanks. I owned the original 3020's when they came out and liked them until I added a Dali E9-F sub and then I loved them. They can't fill a big room though, so I upgraded when I moved house. Highly recommend that sub with those speakers though.

Interesting review mate and refreshing too as these magazines really do varnish the sound of these speakers reviewed these days! I agree with you the vintage stuff...well most of it is so pure and mega bargains are to be had! Like my home made Celestion speakers with 4 drivers in each cabinet l picked up recently and bought for only £26...crazy!!!

Hi Kelvin, love these reviews, nice that you did that comparison towards the end to say what you would recommend for the price range of those speakers if you wanted something that sounded better. Would be interesting to know if you have specific examples of speakers you would by instead of these but in their price range, for different size rooms?

Most bookshelf speakers have small cabinets lacking bass. Not sure how you feel about subwoofers but I believe adding a sub and blending in with your main speakers (at the right frequency so the sub isn't producing excessive bass) is a good idea. My solution was to buy the cheapest pair you have here, the 3020's and buy an entry level BK Gemini sub. Great results. Also I was convinced the 3020's were average speakers until I corrected my set up. That involved moving some furniture around to give the speakers more space, angling the speakers slightly inward towards the centre and moving them away from the wall. Now I honestly think they are fantastic for the money. Its always worth reading the manual, Q Acoustics offers pretty good advice on soundstage and bass in particular. insert the bungs in rear port to avoid boomy bass when speakers are set against the wall, move speakers closer together for better mid bass coupling, or even buy Q Acoustics 30 series subwoofer to go with the speakers. I've found experimenting with set up goes a long way! Your conclusion doesn't surprise me that the 3020's (the cheapest!) Win. When i auditioned a pair by Cambridge, the Q Acoustics won by a long way.

Thanks Kelvin, great as always. I have an idea for a future video: comparing some full range speakers. Over the last year, I’ve really got into full range speakers; to be honest, I get most pleasure out of them and I’ve really gone off conventional speakers with their various drivers and tweeters. However, I think these are overlooked by a lot of people. Would be interested to hear what you think!

Since I posted my last comments 2 years ago I have been using these Elacs for garage duty whenever I was out there working, not really paying attention to how they sounded. I recently gave my daughter my old PC speakers and decided use the Elacs with an old Yamaha MX-830 power amp hooked directly up to my PC. I honestly wasn't expecting much, a decent sound but nothing special. I am now absolutely enamoured with these speakers. They completely transformed with a solid year of burn in. They are so transparent I can hear details I didn't think was possible from these speakers. I am hearing distinct layering of instruments within the soundstage which also has very good scale for a bookshelf. The dynamics are really surprising me for a small speaker, they can scare you. I even find these speaker very revealing which I always thought they were veiled. All week when at work all I can think about is listening to these speakers and how wrong I was. I can't say for certain why the radical transformation in the sound happened but I have a few theories. These have been played steady and hard in my garage. I had about 100 hours on them before I moved them to the garage, but maybe further burn in opened them up. I read these speakers have a very long burn in time. I am also using well isolated stands but have tried them before on the same stands with poor results. I have used many high end amps on these speakers with poor results, but maybe they pair really well with my hybrid class A Yamaha. I am enjoying this second system right now as much as my 30k system.

Great to see you review more modern speakers, Kelvin, and it's also nice to see that nobody is reinventing the wheel, for us vintage hifi lovers. I've tried the Q Acoustics, and was really underwhelmed after reading such good things, sadly. I'd much rather listen to my Kef Coda 7's, which i would love to see you review, and best of all you can pick a pair up for 50 quid. They to me are a real sleeper of a speaker, and yes, they are a plastic fronted box as opposed to a lovely veneered and polished box, but for the money, they give you massive bang for your buck, and take up minimal room. .. I have the Q Acoustic 2010i in my study/den so comparable to the 3020, its a small room so anything bigger would cause irritation to my wife downstairs, you have to consider speaker size to the room. I also have Acoustic Energy Evo floorstanders as my main speakers in my living room, huge scale on those but being a much bigger room I can let them rip. The Evo's could be described as smooth and full bodied but I love the midrange, vocals are a real strength at the expense of some bass tightness. But at least they do one thing right, right? I auditioned the Evo's against some B&W speakers and the bright top end irritated me no end.

Wow K A brutally honest assessment (as always). I only got my Q3020i speakers last week as a part of a bundled deal along with a Marantz PM 6007 amp. At least you said they were they least annoying of the 3 speakers reviewed HaHa. So far I'm pleased with the quality of sound mine produce. Yes the bass isn't that punchy but I'm happy overall with how they perform. My set up is in a box bedroom home office so I am not looking to fill a vast space and I primarily listen to Radio 3 / Radio 6 via a Teac T-R650DAB Tuner plus some streaming. The Q3020i have replaced a pair of TDL RTL2 speakers I've had since circa 1993-4. I was thinking of selling them but as I now recognise should I relocate my Hi-Fi to a larger space I will need a bigger set of speakers again. As the TDL's are in full working order and no longer available I'm now thinking of keeping them. They have attracted a lot of interest on Facebook but not offers - probably because I put them up as no offers / fixed price. Keep up the good work - love the channel and the variety of topics and kit you cover. PS any views on the Marantz PM 6007 or should I not ask LOL

I think the problem with many small speakers is they are trying to punch above their size with the bass. I had the same problem with a set of KEF Cresta 10's. It muds the mids. Q-acoustics seems to have gotten it more right. You could probably use them with a sub. Most of these small speakers are really designed to be rear surrounds in a home cinema set-up, where the bass probably would not be in the equation for directional sound. But in a stereo setup it's just too much. leave it to a sub or get bigger speakers. The Sansui I got 331 is great btw. real smooth. Very good base response. Alicia Keys almost killed it already when she came on after a classical piece. It didn't like the sudden booms and started crackling. Luckily it went away again.

But this reviewer is certainly right, the Q's do lack bass and are far more midrange focused.

@@AmbientWanderer oh that's good. Yes I have them. There is a good 2017 review from a Richer Sounds employee (Ed Steely) '' We're on a Mission Again" on the avforums, who tests them after listening to a pair of PMC's worth £1870 and implyed the were not hugely different. I find them very balanced with good bass, not excessive, but good and solid. And a nice open sound with good mids. Not thunder bass but find your bassist track and see. Also these speakers change in sound by every inch or so of movement. So experiment a bit with positioning. The instructions should be on the mission site if they come without them. I have have mission stands too because of the inverted cones. Just to be on the safe side for correct highth, which is 23in from floor to the top plate (bottom of speaker) so you know that's the height they are designed to operate.

This is interesting. If a person is fed McDonald's all his life. Then THAT is the taste of a burger.. The same if someone is brought up with only listening on LP/CD/streaming. Then that one is USED that it should sound like that (preferences). The same if someone is brought up and only listening to vintage speakers that usually have same character like paper cone and so on. It can be that someone can get "stuck" in a sound preferences.. But the savior is IF it sounds like real instruments and not how someone have learned or thinks that how it sounds because of its many years of listening to colored sound and developed a bias. So maybe a comparison between the actual instruments or to go out and listening on live music may result that we end closer towards a consensus 🎶 Thanks for your review 😉😍

Regarding the elac 6.2 I was wondering if you gave them a good break in as I've heard the sound improves. I got mine preowned so dont know what they sounded like new. I am not in love with them and will most likely sell them at some point. It would have been interesting to hear your take on the original b6, quite different from the 6.2. I do believe based on all the reviews I've heard that the elacs do sound better as you scale up in cost, which they should. Not sure if you listen at higher SPL but a lot of air moves through the port on those little elac's . There were times I thought there was an electric fan in the room.

I like your honesty and passion, but it would be far more interesting if you could show how you had them all set up because all speakers do not sound equal in one position. For example, one might sound way better firing straight ahead, one might sound better well toed in, closer together etc. Some manufacturers design their speakers to sound best off axis, some don’t. How much time do you spend tuning each speaker in your room or do you simply place them all in the exact same position? What about showing the manufacturers recommended placement for each speaker. The reason I think this is important is because from my own experience I know placement can be so important in extracting the best sound for a given speaker and no two speakers will ever interact with your room in exactly the same way. So sometimes good speakers sound bad due to poor set up and vice versa. I would never say any speaker sounds good or bad without adding “in this room” or “in my room” because in someone else’s room I can pretty much guarantee they will sound completely different. So adding your room dimensions, toe in, placement would be useful to put things into greater context.

Hi Greetings from Serbia , look m8 i like you dont take this as a critique , but you are mistaken about a lot of what you say , i dont mean to offend but take a Reference Measuring microphone , they are cheap 50 pound or around , even less . Then measure it . You will see how you were wrong and where you were wrong , just like i did , did it found out how little i can hear when i dont know what to listen for . Everyone can notice tiny differences if there is a possibility to do A/B , and B being a 100% flat sound , but we dont have that , so what we have is Reference microphone , so we can use that . And then you can progress further , its liek a tool , in any business one needs tools , a map to know where he is , you know . And if you neglect that you will be at a loss , no 2 ways about it . And im nto saying Reference Mic will tall you everything correctly , but it doesnt have to , but it will for example tell witch of those 3 has best bass , or mids or highs , you know If you would do it like that i would trust you more . I trust you as it is , i trust that you think what you say honestly , but its 50% of time wrong , its a mistake ,a correctable mistake .
