Q&A With Clinton Anderson: Horse Hangs Herself While Tied Up

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

Question: I have an 8-year-old mare who I recently got back from a family that had her previously. I discovered that now she sometimes tries to hang herself when tied up. She will get pissed off and lay down while being tied and won't get up. I was wondering what to do and if you have you ever seen that behavior before? I've seen horses that'll get mad and lay down and refuse to get up out of stubbornness, but only one other time in my life have I witnessed a horse try to hang themselves.

The Method works,,,a lot of people just don't want to spend the time and effort it takes to make a good horse. They want someone else to do it for them and then expect the horse to stay that way for a lifetime. LEARN TO DO THE METHOD Clinton has made it easy. Just apply yourself, get the videos, spend time with your horse, enjoy the knowledge available to you.

Thank you for not sugar coating the issues you talk about. I also would have said after you said this issue is not a quick fix. This is why great horse training is expensive. Once completed at a great training camp. Your horse is no longer an a-hole. Plain and simple.

It’s nice how it’s explained ! With horses there are definitely no shortcuts when it comes to behavior and success. During the time when due to Covid there weren’t any competitions I worked on some issues; and they are gone ! I’m lucky that I used that time for intensive ground work 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I have many of your videos. I watched them over and over before I bought a horse. They were a big help. I also had my young horse loving granddaughter watch them. She’s turned into a pretty good little rider. PSI can’t share this video with grandkids.🤨

Should we waste time getting to a roundpen or just lunge them on a line right there next to where they were tied? I've never had this problem but I'd like to know how to fix it if it ever comes up.

As long as you're moving their feet I think you're fine. If it's safer for you and the horse in the round pen get to the round pen, but maybe do some backing or lunging for respect while you walk over there. I can do trailer work next to my trailers if needed bc my horses have went through the beginning of Clinton's method. If you haven't done that you may want the round pen

This will work on some horses but not all. On some other personalities, this kind of discipline will only drive the fear deeper and be more difficult to fix. You really need to take this on a horse by horse basis. If your overall goal is to train a horse through fear, then this works for all horses. I prefer to train the individual. That takes some intuition and some wisdom.

I remember as a kid reading "My Friend Flicka" where the dad in the book shot a "loco" horse because "A horse without common sense is a horse without the right to existence". That always stuck with me because it is true.
