Hi, guys!
We decided we would switch it up a little this week and have an ol’ sit down discussion, since it’s been a little while since we’ve done so.
Being a Korean/Canadian couple and growing up in different countries, “Do you two have cultural differences in your relationship?” is a question we have gotten frequently since starting our KZread channel. We thought we would make a video on the topic and finally address this question in detail ^^
Of course each couple is different and in turn may have completely different situations when it comes to cultural differences, but this is just our personal experience~
We’re curious if any of you have had cultural differences with your partner, and if so, about what?
Also, thank you SO much again to the lovely people who added subtitles to some of our videos! We weren't able to contact you and thank you personally, since it didn't show anyone's ID. We really, really appreciate your time and effort--thanks a million!
Hope you all had a great weekend! As always, thanks for watching! :D

Having grown up in a multicultural Canadian family. I think you really nailed this topic. Compromise and a willingness to meet in the middle is what makes any relationship successful. My grandparents were always so sweet & understanding of my Mamá especially in the early days of their language barrier. She adored them for it :3

I am really happy for the teamwork and acceptance from both of sides of the family on making this relationship work. Having a good relationship with both your own family and the in-laws about your relationship and marriage is always desired and you guys have made it work really well. And making bonds work, effort has to come from both sides of the family. Guess at this point it's more of a generation gap intra-family rather than pure cultural difference inter-family.

Thank you for another wonderful video! In so many ways you two are so blest in your relationship!... All that you said about older people is very true, Sarah - I am so happy your attention and warmth toward Kyuho's grandfather helped to create a good relationship there. It's interesting about the cultural generation gap between young people in Korea of your age and Kyuho's parents' age. I understand how this can be, seeing as S.Korea 'came of age' so quickly in more recent times. But, Kyuho, when you said you have less cultural differences with Sarah than you do with his parents, that really brought it home.

First of all, love the videos you make. The quality and the detailed content is really helpful. Regarding the subtitles, I went through and for some reason only some of your videos gave me the option to add subtitles. I'm not sure if it's something I'm doing wrong or because of the upload type or something but I would be willing to do some if all the videos had this option ;) (This vid doesn't btw) Thanks again!

I when trough a Korean movie faze, when I wanted to see different foreign movies, other than american English spoken ones, and I fell in love with korean films. One I loved most of all was Memories of murder, and I wanted my mom to watch it too but there were no romanian subtitles for it available online so I had to write subtitles for it from english to romanian and also interpret it. Just a rant about subtitles, love your videos guys.

The thing is in the West ppl expect foreigners to "melt" and forget their identity when they move to europe/US. And if you dont they say, "if you dont like it here go back to your country". While I feel like asia/korea respect others faiths and cultures.

Again great topic of discussion. I also had similar thoughts and concerns as Kyuho at first when I was dating my husband since my side of the family came from very traditional Asian background. However, I was surprised by my family's immediate openness and acceptance of my husband. I think as long as there is a respect and understanding of each other, acceptance comes easily. And when acceptance, respect and understanding happens amongst each other, I don't think there will be an issues of cultural differences...at least that is what I/we have learned through out of relationships and marriage and we are still learning 😊

I really enjoyed watching this video and have subscribed🌞 I, too, was raised in different cultures and could identify when at one point you asked yourself about your identity 🌝 With my father being Native American and my mother being born and raised in France and then going to school and living in Japan for 5 years and then moving to U.S. for remaining school years, I can see some of the cultural differences and mindsets that are and were different than my friends - even holidays were different in each culture. The French and Japanese culture doesn't have pow wows or that style of music and the 3 kisses on each cheek french greeting would definitely cause looks in Japan. 🌞 One similarity that I noticed with Native American culture and Asian culture (& it's not to say that other cultures do not have respect) is the emphasis placed on respecting and honoring elders. There is so much more but I would rather focus on what you both, who are such a cute couple, have shared. I am really looking forward to more videos 💖

I understand Kyuho's "Who am I" feel. I grew up in a multicultural environment in my home country (the capital is very multicultural, I never went to school with only kids from my country, there was also 1/3 to 2/3 of the class that were foreigners), then moved around a lot (Germany, UK, US, Korea, France) and traveled a lot... Now I sometimes feel like my heart is divided between different cultures. I settled back in my home country for university and realized a had a cultural gap with my classmates. I felt homesick of my own country for a while, but after some time, it got better. My friends also learned to understand my quirky sides when it comes to some cultural stuff and accept it pretty well. I still feel it sometimes because all of my university friends speak French but although I speak French, aside from school and friends, I only speak English. Therefore, I don't watch french tv, I don't know french-speaking celebrities, I never watched the same cartoons as they did as kids, etc. I get a little lost when they speak about some stuff so I just sit and listen ^^'

Hey guys, I don't know if you have read the book "The 4-hour work week." I haven't personally but it is highly recommended out there specially for people working from home. If you look up reviews and talks on it, the book apparently has changed people's lives. When I heard of it I thought of you guys since I don't know many people that work from home. Anyways, check it out and keep it up with the videos:)

I stumbled onto your video today, I think you guys make really beautiful couple:) As a Korean in a mixed-race relationship myself, I can't help but feel really jealous of you two! I really loved what Sarah said on the video, that you can't expect only one person to adapt the other person's culture. Coz I feel like I am the one who has to understand everything about my bf's culture..:'( I mean I do understand it since he comes from a very closed, conservative culture, but it's still hard! Well, anyway, I loved your video! :)

I know that from my marriage to someone from the Arab culture I have absorbed certain aspects of the culture. I feel like I fit into the Arab culture in many ways but really hold on strongly to the American culture. I never feel like an outsider until I meet up with someone outside of my circle and I get that look like you are not one of us. I don't like the reverse preconceived judgements even though I know where they come from. I am glad this couple and their families are working this out. Having your parents support you really makes married life easier.

Hi, I was curious in Korea how often is it that you'll see young international couples (couples between the ages of 15 to 21)? Also I would like to know from both of you if you believe there's more pressure on males versus females in Korea to date (because I'm too young for marriage) within their own ethnicity? I'm referring more to teenagers or young adults. Thank you 😆

Sarah's comment at 8:54 basically hit my mind so hard right now as a Korean person who resides in Canada. I've always been aware of Canada's unique concept called "Cultural Mosaic", however, somehow I lost that in my mind. So whenever I feel like "My English doesn't make sense today, it's literally a verbal diarrhea", then I'd blame myself pretty hard as I wanna be "fit" in Canadian culture. But Sarah, ur comment made me realized what I have forgotten in my mind, so thank you for ur kind words. It made my day! :D

+2hearts1seoul I think both of u guys would understand exactly what I meant... lols Thanks for uploading great videos btw! I started to watch u guys' videos bcuz 1. Sarah is Canadian (eh?) and your pronunciation is very clear/articulate (probably bcuz u teach English as a job?) 2. Dancing Lee's (lol) english sometimes has something that I could learn from as he and I share the mother tongue/maybe even dialect (I'm from 충청 provice as well lmao) and 3. I kinda can alleviate this random homesickness by watching ur vids! Thanks again! U guys r awesome! :D

I guess I'm a third culture kid.. growing up in a different countries than where my parents are from, and I always don't know who I am, I just feel like I dont fit anywhere. Growing up in Hong Kong has given me a really internationalized concept, and in my school, there is a lot of foreigners. And also I have been studying in the States since 15. So when I first met my Korean boyfriend and started dating him, we did had a hard time! Like our beliefs in sexism, racism, or the pursue of education (as Asians mostly care about ranking, but I really don't, because of my cultural exposure to the American's culture). It was really hard for us in the beginning, but it is also a very unique and extraordinary experience for both of us!
