PYRAMIDS OF MARS | VHS & DVD Comparison | Doctor Who | Fourth Doctor
I bring Sutekh's gift of a video comparison of the 1985 VHS and 2004 DVD editions of the classic #DoctorWho story Pyramids Of Mars... to all humanity.
TIMESTAMPS:
00:00 Introduction
00:32 Part One
02:55 Part Two
05:08 Part Three
05:46 Part Four
08:15 Outro
TIMELINE:
February 1985 - Still less than ten years after its first broadcast, BBC Video release Pyramids Of Mars as an edited 90 minute omnibus on pre-cert VHS (BBCV2014) and Betamax (BBCB2014). A number of additional cuts removed material from Parts One, Two and Four, as examined in this video.
April 1987 - The 1985 omnibus is re-issued with a U certificate on VHS (BBCV4055).
February 1994 - Pyramids Of Mars is finally released 'Complete and Unedited' on VHS (BBCV5220) in its original episodic format, although the back cover still erroneously advertises a 90 min running time. BBC2 repeat the story on Sunday lunchtimes throughout March.
2004 - The four-part serial is released on DVD having been recently voted as the most wanted story in a fortieth anniversary poll conducted by Doctor Who Magazine.
SOURCES:
1. 1985 VHS, edited compilation - BBCV2014 - out of print
2. 2004 DVD, episodic & unedited - BBCVDVD1350 - currently available

Great video Pip 👍, brings back memories. I remember at one point having the VHS and the version shown on the ABC in Australia which had different cuts made to it for censorship reasons, so it was interesting comparing those two
These really need to be put into any future releases. These are awesome. Also, the outro theme, sounds so much like The Two Doctors soundtrack.

The old BBC Video jingle is definitely a Radiophonic Workshop piece. Off the top of my head I don’t know who composed/arranged it but it could well have been Peter Howell (who did the Two Doctors music), but to me it sounds more like Roger Limb. Could be wrong though!

Yes, that one is Peter Howell.
The Brain of Morbius comparison would take a bit longer

yep! According to wikipedia, the original BoM vhs was 59min, but i coulda sworn it was closer to 50min. Regardless, a 4 episode serial (like BoM) in omnibus format with no scenes removed should be ~90min
If I could make a couple of suggestions, it would be interesting to see a comparison of the original release of The Brain of Morbius since when it first came out on video in 1984 it was heavily condensed to about an hour. Also the original release of The Five Doctors from 1985 was a condensed version which was made for US TV, the later release from 1990 was the original broadcast version.
Very well done 👍🏻
I like Pyramids of Mars
What's odd is my VHS version didn't have the scene where the doctor mentions the most common letter is E, which really stuck out to me on the dvd as I didn't remember it, it really was cut and i don't know why😅
Interesting comparison. Admittedly, when making an omnibus version as the early VHS releases were, slight trims to ends/starts of episodes were inevitable but I can't work out the logic for the rest of them, really. It's not as if the overall running time would have been significantly impacted....

At a guess, it was to make sure the whole thing would fit on a 90-minute videotape, as opposed to paying extra to use an E120 or, probably even more expensively, a bespoke-length videotape.

@@WestyAds If commercially produced video cassettes were made on the same basis as commercially produced audio cassettes, I'd imagine they were custom lengths rather than specific lengths a la retail blanks.

I got a copy from 1985..omnibus copy..
Thanks for this video. Thank goodness DVD was invented for us classic 'whovians'😅.
Wasn't the "hand" that was seen as Sutekh stands up, deleted from the VHS as well, or am I miss-remembering? Great video BTW:)

Thanks! And yes, afraid you're misremembering.
Am I correct in thinking there are very minor trims in the original release of The Five Doctors?

Yes I believe so, though I don't have a copy to hand. If anyone does, give me a shout!
Question when the vhs was released as a non omnibus in 1995 would it have been similar to the dvd
@PipMadeley

The unedited VHS was released in 1994 and yes, same as the DVD but unrestored.
The 1985 VHS version isn't as good as the uncut version. I wonder if the 1983 Revenge of the Cybermen VHS suffered the same fate
@PipMadeley

Revenge Of The Cybermen was complete (other than the edits required to make it a compilation).

@@PipMadeley So only the cliffhanger bits were removed I think

Exactly, just the bits with the sting into the closing credits.

@Pip Madeley I don't think it's possible you could do Series 1 Casualty edits, can you? As of now, the Teeny Poppers episode has yet to be found uncut with the Spiderman bits.
