I see so many new tortoise owners overfeeding their pets, and also feeding them far too rich foods. In the wild most of the common species would feed on foods full of fibre, like course dry grasses and stringy or tough fibrous weeks. People are feeding them juicy sweet fruits, succulent and sweet soft vegetables from the supermarket, and then huge amounts of processed and rich pellets. They need little food to grow slowly, lots of fibre, and of course, UVB!! Also the humid hides are a MUST!!! Too hot and too dry, too much food and lack of space to wear down the shell are also common practices in pet tortoise keepers.

100% Jason, grasses and weeds should make up MOST of their diet. Glad to see your comment this morning

New subscriber here. I have a 1-year old sulcata. Your channel is so informative. I hope I can have a bell from your channel.

My sulcata is a rescue believed to be about 10 years. His shell is really dry and has some peeling. What can I do for him?

Honestly, I’d take your sulcata to a vet. Turtles will shed scutes but tortoises normally do not. Could be some kind of parasitic infection or disease.

Does anyone know until what age? I have a sulcata who is about 10 inches long. Does the humidity need to be high as they age

Ideally until adulthood if possible. Sulcatas burrow to reach that Humid/cool microclimate underground. They typically reach their max size around 100-200lbs depending on the locality. If you live in a drier region and you have built them a house outdoors you could setup a misting system to help regulate the ambient humidity.

My local seller told me that pyramiding are normal for sulcata at size 10-20cm because of growth period.. after that size, the carapas will be normal..is that true?

  • @spacecoasttortoise

I’d have to disagree, something about their care is off if they are pyramiding that early. That being said, Minor pyramiding isn’t necessarily an issue and can be normal as long as it’s not grotesque. They may be “power feeding” them, lack of humid hide with 80-90% humidity, or it can even be genetically predisposed to pyramiding. Hope this helps!

Unfortunately no, however not all is lost! you can still correct the new growth! Some may be genetically predisposed to pyramiding no matter what you do but you should always strive to give the tortoise the best care you can. 👍
