Current is transported within cables which form “electrical conductors”. They are bare (not insulated) to limit their weight and are attached to pylons or poles via chains of insulators. Insulators are generally glass or porcelain wafers. There are up to 19 per chain on the very high voltage lines of the transmission network and up to 3 per chain on the medium and low voltage lines of the distribution network.very high voltage lines (400,000 V and 225,000 V) and high voltage (mainly 63,000 V) which carry electricity from large production units to transformers, they are supported by pylons whose shape and width vary depending on the environment . These steel pylons are often “lattice” (assembly forming a triangulation)(1). Generally, the higher the line voltage, the taller the pylons. A pylon supporting a 400,000 V line can reach 90 m high;
medium voltage and low voltage lines (between 20,000 and 230 V) which carry electricity from transformers to end consumers. they are supported by electrical poles generally made of wood or concrete. These are only 10 to 14 m high.
The conductors of high-voltage overhead lines are always naked. Copper cables and aluminum cables with steel core (ACSR “Aluminum cable steel reinforced”) are used almost exclusively; the latter are generally the most economical.
The guard cables do not conduct current. They are located above the phase conductors. They act as a lightning rod above the line, attracting lightning strikes and preventing conductors from being struck by lightning. They are generally made of steel. In the center of the steel cable we sometimes place a fiber optic cable which is used for the operator's communication.
