I have "philosophical issues" here... using a chip with more oomph than the entirety of my first computer just to do the job of a 555 seems sort-of "wasteful" to me. :)

Is that really how bad the PWM signal is from your Arduino or is that an artifact of the scope?

Real life waveforms are never as tidy as you'd expect them to be. But saying that, the one on the little box was awfully neat????
