The thing is, they didn't know the exact number. Doss said that it was no more then 50 where as his superior officer ( I think ) said it was a lot more. Maybe about 100. But they had to settle at some number, when they decided to give him the Medal. So they kinda decided it was 75. Doss was pretty humble and he was probably under severe stress. So might was probably more than 50. But sadly, no one knows exactly how many he got down.

Movie makers have taken so many liberties with actually events that when an actual story like his presents itself they have to tone it down to make it believable. I read an article about him giving a speech and how his beliefs played apart in his life. In the audience sat an older Japanese man. The man come up after and told him how his books and testimony had led him to Christ. He then explained more saying he was also on that island as a sniper. He told him on three different times he had him in his sites and each time his gun either jamed or misfired. He went on to say that was the only time it ever happened. He was convinced that powers beyond the Japanese or American had intervened. How many of us would believe the real horrors of war if it shows up in a movie from Hollywood ?

You guys are arguing about what it takes to be a hero in the United state’s military, well, your a war hero if you join, instead of taking the easier life where you just take a desk job and then go home and do whatever you want everyday, those brave men and women choose to sign up, often times right out of highschool or collage, they are willing to put their bodies and lives on the line to defend the nation and our Allies, they can go months to years without seeing their families or their wife’s and kids, if they get deployed into combat situations there’s a chance that they get seriously wounded and die, or seriously injured and their life is never the same again. Sure a lot of soldiers in the military are back up plans, or work on the base and some may never even get deployed, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t helping protect the country. Sure other soldiers are more heroic then others, but if you are in any branch of the military, regardless of whether or not you get deployed or ever see actual combat, whether you ever get injured or not, your still a hero, more of a hero then anyone else not serving besides first responders. Don’t discredit the fine men and women that are the reason we can live so comfortably and have the freedom and rights we have now.

Better Spidey than the first one, but Tom Holland was somehow even better than the first two because he managed to combine the good parts of the first two - and while Tobey was 26 and Andrew was 28 in their first Spider-Man movies, Tom Holland was 18 when he first appeared in Captain America: Civil War - much more believable to be in High-School when you are actually at that age.

Yet they added in all that horseshite where full bird colonels tried to have him discharged over his religion. Where his commanding officer made him miss his wedding. Where the brass was ready to court martial and imprison a field medic who volunteered. Yeah, none of that crap happened! That was all typical tripe outta Hollywood. Desmond Doss caught crap from other recruits, but was never officially reprimanded because his ethics were based on religion. He *_was_* allowed to forego weapons training. He was *_never_* forced to handle and discharge a weapon. He was even allowed a pass to attend Saturday services. He was accomodated because, as impressive as his story is, he was not the first nor even the thousandth soldier who wanted to serve without killing his fellow man. Perhaps they should have given time to the other incredible deeds he accomplished.

Desmond Doss is one of my favorite world war 2 hero’s to learn about and talk about, he served as combat medic during the height of WW2 in the fight against the Japanese empire. He served in multiple battles but the one the movie covers is the battle of hacksaw ridge on the island of Okinawa. That day Desmond Doss saved as estimated 75 lives, the exact number is unknown as Desmond Doss claims he only saved 50 men that day after his unit had fallen back to safety. Desmond Doss continued to save lives on his own carrying them back one by one, each time saying, “Lord, let me save one more.” By the end of it the military claimed he saved 100 men that day while he claims only 50 so estimate was put somewhere in the middle at 75, including 2 Japanese soldiers. After he was back with his unit they made another push where Desmond was injured by grenade shrapnel after attempting to kick a grenade away, (yeah that kick was historically accurate in the movie) and after receiving a sniper round to his arm, for his bravery on the frontlines he was rewarded the Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart. He trusted God and saved many lives during his service. And he’s not once had to pick up a weapon.

I see what you're saying but my son died after serving and he told me his feelings, he was broken and his heart stopped. It wasn't suicide or anything like that, it was someone else, a sniper killed his Sgt and my son came home to family but he said the sniper had a family too. I was told after my son died there were 3 snipers trained in Iraq before we got there. His Sgt was standing beside him. That woman who was shot because of Trump had an easy death and you can hate me but she had an easy death and that eased me because my sons Sgt was shot the same way, in the neck, but my son was afraid he would go to jail for shooting the sniper but his brother's in arms stood up for him. I'm sure this movie is beautiful but my heart is broken. My son will be in the line to Heaven in front of me but I miss him. Don't ever wonder why I hate Trump, he is a coward. He should be in prison, actually he should have the death penalty because that's what he should have for treason. Why are all of you afraid of not giving Trump the right punishment? Also, Mel as an ultra conservative Catholic doing a movie about a historical SDA (extreme Protestant - I was raised one, and read Dawson’s book many times), was pretty open-minded of him.

This movie was based on a true story. I usually do t line war movies , but this movie I have watched over and over again!!! Excellent movie!!!!
Not only did he save countless fellow soldiers but he was also tending to enemy soldiers protecting every life he could. I’m sure somewhere overseas there is a family that is there because of his humanity. Not only a hero to our side.

The words he spoke was truly heartwarming and really hits deep. It sure was a great short speech. It truly was from the heart and filled with truth. If men today are like him the world would surely be a better and beautiful place for every living being. Bravo to the writer. 🎉❤
And eventually he is recognized as one of the greatest soldiers to ever live they put respect on his name and gave him the recognition he deserved

The last traitors, the husband and wife were put to death as they should have been. Trump should be put to death or our country will never heal.

Learning about Doss literally changed my life. I used to be selfish and destructive I didnt even value my own life. When I learned of Doss how he loved and save the souls of others. It humbled me and gave me a path to follow. I may not be a perfect soul but I will try until I cant Id volunteer to help how ever I can. So I thank this man for saving my soul and I hope he saved more.

To be honest you can be incredibly proud of yourself in my opinion. To acknowledge your own flaws like that and make the decision to better yourself takes an incredible amount of strength, wisdom and courage, that most people are simply never able to achieve to this extend. I'm glad to hear it's been life changing for you and i genuinely hope it brings you all the peace, happiness and joy in the world that you deserve. Bless you🙏🏽

Wait till you find out about Jesus. It hits different.
Best speech, testimony I've ever heard. Talk about humility!
“With the world so set on tearing itself apart, don’t seem like such a bad thing to me to wanna put a little of it back together” Such an emotional sentence
A level of honor and integrity most can never fathom.
"With the world so set on tearing itself apart, it doesn't seem like such a bad thing to me to want to put a little bit of it back together." My all time favorite quote from anything ever. So beautiful. Shows how much he truly loves his country.

One of the bravest men that’s ever went to war…..rip
I named my second son after him. Desmond was such an inspiring and incredible man who was full of conviction. If everyone were like him our world sure would be different today.
The balls on this man is something amazing. Not many people would have the fortitude to risk their life to save so many soldiers. As a veteran I do not want to serve with him. many I talk to share that sentiment. It comes down to trusting the man next to you to protect you with every thing they have. This man would not shot a Japanese solider to save my life. I would rather take my chances with a man who will shoot the enemy then someone will run into enemy fire to pull me out. Thats the code of the fox hole. For the guy next to you. To come home alive.
Doss's story was truely inspirational. May he rest In peace

Because it portrayed men as masculine, admirable, and heroic. Because it was a movie about white, heterosexual males mostly. Doesn’t check the right boxes
I was lucky enough to meet Desmond Doss when I was a young teen. He was a sweet, gentle soul who made time for everyone. I can still hear his voice telling about his time serving and the way he spoke about his wife was beautiful.
Found out my wife is a, tho be it very distant, relative of this great man. And honestly, i can see it in her, the love and compassion and forgivingness just as he had.
This dude puts all his soul and heart into every thing he makes. Even in Spiderman. This is a true actor.
So glad this guy got a movie based on him. Shaking his hand was one of the most humbling experiences in my life.

The speech made me cry because some of my relatives were Adventist and and were treated very badly because they didn’t want to carry weapon while serving as Medics so this really touched me because they were called cowards because they didn’t want shoot anyone just save as possible including the enemy and they were almost shot them selves for trying to save everyone but one of the Germans my Great Grandfather‘a saved warned everyone that they were going to be bombed because he he heard a radio transmission and they were able everyone in time before they were bombed! Sometimes kindness has rewards and being brutal in every situation is a self fulfilling prophecy!

The movie it’s called hacksaw Ridge. A 2015 movie directed by Mel Gibson
My grandad never carried a weapon. His job was to go onto burning ships to recover survivors and anything else that needed to be got off said ship.
If I had a penny for everytime a Spiderman actor went on to brilliantly portray the main character in a war movie, I would have two pennies, which isn’t a lot but its weird it happened twice.
