Great content as always Keith. Folks, don’t forget that there are lots of “givens” here, e.g. all links are at 1Gbps speeds. Remember in reality that STP makes decisions on *actual* link speeds, not link speed *capability*. So, if a link is 1Gbps-capable - so the ports at either end are 10/100/1000 - but the link is only running at 10Mbps (for whatever reason), STP makes cost decisions based on the 10Mbps speed, not on 1Gbps.

Keith, just wanted to say thank you for putting these spanning tree videos out there. You've really cleared up a concept that I was struggling with for a bit. I watched your video and then rewatched again after recreating it in Packet Tracer. I couldn't recreate it exactly as you taught it but it was great to see the ports change states as you described. The only issue I had was that Packet Tracer doesn't show the Type change from P2p Peer(STP) as in your example. Is there a way to see that in Packet Tracer? What is the tool you use for network simulation? Your videos are highly motivational! Thank you for putting this out there Keith.

Keith thanks for all this content - i have been watching your videos on STP and finally getting it. One ? though at 46:48 shouldn't either 1/1 or 2/2 have been in a BLK state? I thought when two switches have dual-connections then based on if cost was equal, bridge id being equal , priority being equal then port number would be tie breaker, meaning that one of the Designated ports should be blocking? Is that only with 802.1D, does 802.1W treat dual connections differently? Really appreciate your teaching style

Awesome video, I learned a great deal (not a network guy). I am trying to understand how Cisco's PVST operates when there are multiple VLANs configured. I understand that if I connect three layer 2 switches in a ring and the native VLAN is configured to span between all interconnects, PVST would block the port to break the loop. Let's say that there was a different VLAN that (VLAN ID 10) that was only configured on that interconnect that was blocked to break the Native VLAN. Would I still be able to send VLAN 10 traffic access that interconnect? As i understand, STP would block the entire port (not let any traffic cross) while PVST would only Block the Native VLAN traffic but still allow VLAN 10 to cross? It would be great to see an example of this. Thanks

Hi Keith, I hope you are doing well. I have ccnp r&s and I am thinking to get into network security. I want learn more about firewalls. Which firewalls is best to start with cisco, palo alto or check point? Please advise. Thank you

Thank you for the question Mo. If you are at a company that has a specific vendor's firewall, that is the one I would start with. If not, may want to take a look at Cisco's FirePower solution. I also like Palo Alto and Checkpoint very much.

Thank you for the question Robinson Saez. In spanning tree, when the port is "blocking" for a specific VLAN, it means the port will nor forward user data frames, for that VLAN. The port isn't administratively down, it is just STP that is blocking.

Is the base mac address separate from the port mac addresses on a switch? Or does it correspond to one of the switch ports (like port 1). So would a 24port switch actually have 25 mac addresses? Also, do you know a way in Packet Tracer to assign a base mac address? I was trying to match them up to yours so I can have the same working model. Packet Tracer seems to randomize them every time I add a new switch (using the base 2960). Thanks Keith! Awesome videos. Also your book helped me earn my CompTIA Net+ in 2015. Still have it on my shelf.

but what happens when we have the same port ID in both interfaces? how stp will work?

Thank you for the question Yazid Boudjema. All the port IDs on a give switch are unique, so there will always be that tiebreaker of the lowest sending ports port ID.

On SW4, how did “int 3/1” become a RP over “int 2/3”?.. I can’t tell if the interface speeds are Gigabit or Fastethernet. -Thanks

PVST+ looks much more like rapid stp than 802.1D it's a bit confusing because in rapid stp they use the alternate port and back like rapid?

i have a question, what if root switch goes down ??
