Taking a look at one of the very best night vision units you can own, the L3 Harris PVS-31A...
I used the PVS-31A BNVD (Binocular Night Vision Device) at a 3 Day Night Vision Course with AMTAC Shooting. Working both pistol as well as carbine, in this case a Knights Armament SR-25. I also put in a lot of time with them in the Shoot House. They did a great job overall.
While they are expensive, they are a know quantity with respect to the minimum spec you're going to get, thanks to the military contract requirements. Legit PVS-31A units from L3Harris...

You mention that in your opinion, it’s important to go with the L3Harris manufactured PVS-31A. Is there any reason not to opt for the Armasight or ATN version instead?
I hear these are popular in Afghanistan. Got a lot of them for free there.

Had some 31's for a previous job. Was really impressed by them. It's really nice being able to shoot passive and still see what's going on in front of you. I'm just not a fan of the power button. I've found them dead in my kit bag while doing PMCS. I ended up just carrying them in my kit bag with the battery compartment unscrewed so it wouldn't get bumped on and kill the battery while in my bag. But yeah, agreed; they're really awesome.
For anyone out there, dont feel like you need to spend an extra 3 grand for the extra clarity "fom". Even a budget gen 3 tube is clear enough to see everything ya need it to
Wish I had the dough for PVS-31A’s, but I’m alright with my PVS-14! Saving for RNVG’s now. :)

I want night vision!!!! I don’t have any realistic need for it, but I want it!!!!
Tubbs Hill. Good hike
My unit had gen 2 14's and I can't not recommend them enough
They do come at the minimum, my first set of 31’s came exactly at 2376. I traded them and boot for my 2nd set that is 2700-2800 FOM.

One of only 2 nods I’ve ever used. I’ve only used night vision professionally unfortunately
Off topic: have you reviewed the multicam jacket you often wear? I can't find it if so.
@kit badger what jacket is that? Also in my previous life, I absolutely LOVED my 31s.... wish I could have taken em with me when i ETS'd . Now its unfortunately very hard to use anything that isnt very close in overall quality and feature set and be satisfied, the long road of more saving continues in order to purchase my own set......
I’m just glad to be able to afford a PVS14 WP had a 18 GP issued that was awesome wish I could afford 31 WP
We’re those rubber band around those things for the lens-covers? That’s a great idea it just comes with one thin band.
Do a video on the jacket
I bet there are afew of these for sale at the Bagdad flea market?
Do the PVS-31A tubes individually and automatically turn off if you rotate them to the side?
Now get some gpnvg18 and go really off the deep end
Still hard to justify the price. If I was a fully employed PMC I'd probably get these, then again It'd probably be smarter to get a spare pvs-14
Why am I watching a gear video for something I’ll only be able to afford if my life insurance pays out

@KitBadger What do you like better? Your DTNVS or these 31 Alphas?
Does one tube shut off when if you raise it, while the other keeps working, probably not, if not it’s junk.
I'd love to have some 31s but honestly if i had that cash to spend I'd get a couple of pair of bridged 14s to peel off and share with my brokedick friends and keep running my gen 3 white phos single 14 when necessary. Night vision is a really lonely hobby when you are doing it on your own.

Depends on your tubes, l3harris manufactured unfilmed tubes will last upwards of 20,000 hours of cumulative run time. Id bet that most tubes die due to someone fucking them up, from either physical damage or by leaving them on(theyll burn an image onto the screen if you overexpose them, sort of like old CRTVs) or by hitting them with a powerful enough laser(which can instantly leave burn marks visible on the phosphor screen) The housing is made to be pretty durable but thats the cheapest part of the unit so it isnt that big of a deal if it breaks, lots of 3rd party manufactured units have 10yr warranties on the housings. The lenses are about as durable as any optic, though i wouldnt recommend shooting sims at them or anything(thats what sacrificial lens covers are for)
My head is already really heavy
Dumb Question but is there a tier or level restricted to le/mil only? id like to get into nvg but I believe in the buy once cry once theory.
