Putting YOUR creations in the Life Engine

Ғылым және технология

In this video I show off a bunch of cool stuff that the community has been up to, including fan art, midjourney, and custom made organisms and worlds that were added to the official version of the life engine, like a computer made out of organisms.

I made my final project for high school about simulating life and they failed me (imo because they didn't have any insight on the topic and only wanted to see their perspective). But these vids got me motivated to keep going. This engine is so cool and interesting. edit: I wanted to give a little update because I never got a notification of these comments and all the love. First of all thanks a lot for the support and sorry for not responding. I'm Belgian and currently going to university for a bachelor in mathematics , I'm probably gonna do a minor in biological informatics next year. The main reason why they failed me was because you got assigned a teacher who helps you with your project. Mine was an IT teacher. So he expected me to only talk about the programming. But my focus was more on the aspect of analysing data, interpreting it, and giving my (maybe a bit dreamy) perspective on it. Sadly that wasn't appreciated. If I would've just talked about how I programmed everything I would've passed for sure but that just seemed way too boring for me. Again thank you all for the support. When I posted this I was scared people were gonna see it as some cheap way to get likes.

@@PokeNebula artificial life in virtual is the imaginative precursor to artificial life with mechanical technology. So I'd analogize traditional computing and AI with traditional robotics and artificial life We have 4 billion years of evolution. Evolution and life are not just side shows... they are an expression of the laws of the universe. So I think there will some day be different forms of biology made of silicon or whatever else, instead of just water and DNA and proteins and stuff. There is almost endless possibilities, since we already have humans as the bootloader and it doesn't have to be self boot-strapping. As intelligent as humans are, that doesn't preclude bacteria from being successful, nor mice, nor ants, nor several other species. Even if AI becomes a dominating force on Earth and beyond, I think it's stupid to believe it will have god-tier centralized control and power. There will always be the little critters hiding in the shadows and corners and other difficult to reach places. Artificial life is likely to participate in that niche, or maybe even be the substrate for artificial intelligence in the first place.

MaximalMegaminx here, glad to have quite a few inclusions, I want to add a few things: - that photo of a binary adding calculator was the only thing displayed, because my original channel I posted it under, got hacked, changed everything about it, streamed some sports for some reason, gained a lot of likely fake subs and views, and was within a few hours (after I saved the situation), banned by KZread, otherwise we’d have a whole video showcasing the mechanism - “Napoleon” seemed like a funny name for an organism that has trouble eating, retreats a lot, but is very aggressive - I actually achieved a Shrub Swamp through pure chance, with no direct edits to the ecosystem, I did inform the discord of it, and I’m glad someone else included it, very likely rediscovered - gonna love the new competition!

Nice stable and successful organism design: Three layers. Triangle shape. Top of triangle: one orange. Middle of triangle: two greens with a gap in the middle. Bottom of triangle: orange, gap, red, gap, orange. I've been calling this one Delta Christmas because it looks like a decorated pine tree to me. Someone else may have already figured this one out and given it a better name though. It's a lot like swamp bushes. It fills a map, packing itself closely together, and creating movers that last only just long enough to clean out the old food before getting crowded out. Selection tends to move toward stabilizing the design, with the original varient remaining somewhere on your world map for hours. Hunter does kill them all though.

Just stumbled across this channel, it's a very elegant and cool engine you've built here. I like it a lot and find it very fascinating. My one criticism is around movers. I find it strange that 1 move block is all it takes for anything to move, like flipping a switch. I think it would make more sense that larger organisms would require spending more blocks on movement in order to move more efficiently. My proposed solution: (mover_blocks)^2 / (total_blocks) * (movement_coefficient) = chance_to_move on each frame. The movement_coefficient could be something like 0.90 to start, but could be tweaked as a parameter. In this way, more movement blocks would mean closer to a 100% chance of moving each frame. This roughly translates to speed, since large organisms with only 1 mover block would rarely move, but this chance would increase as the ratio increases, with a hard upper limit of "always move" each frame. Mover_blocks get squared in the ratio so that large creatures don't need to be entirely mover blocks to be viable.

Purple flowers (and even fully armored purple flowers) actually get countered by flycatcher-esque borers (floating killer block 2 blocks away from the mouth/movers). They rotate to invade the 1 block hole the purple flowers take their food in with the killer block.

Oh, I was more interested in making them evolve naturally. That colony world, I made one like that, starting with a base square organism. I guess it's a quirk of allowing movers to produce food while moving and hitting each other repeatedly. I noticed the same thing, they would eventually make chains (like DNA or atoms) eating each others food producer. But if I noticed completely, they evolved some kind of mechanism to allow or not allow another organism to chain.

There should be a hyperparameter that makes larger organisms live longer and need less food, similarly to the way blue whales have a lifespan and metabolism advantage over bacteria. This way, organisms can be incentivized to grow larger.

What if you add a new tile which allows the same species or very similar species to connect to each other once in contact with that tile. If at least one of the species has a mover tile, then they will move together. The organisms wouldn't merge into one organism but it would be interesting for making colony behavior. Each organism is still required to eat to reproduce themselves, but they can work together to collect food. The tile could also be switched in setting to connect any organisms and create very interesting relationships like for example an animal cell and a mitochondria. I think this tile would have to evolve naturally at a very low rate however.
