Putting lawn mower battery on my mini truck!

The mini truck was having a hard time starting so I put on a new battery. Decided to use a lawn mower battery. Starts up every time now!

Despite it being a simple job as shown in this excellent video, I'm halfway through a battery swap on my 1996 Hijet. I took a quick run at it, pretty much figured out what I wanted to do, and then winter weather returned for a couple of weeks. It's warming again so I'll wrap it up in a couple of days. I installed the largest battery that would fit, which is a 35N with 640 CCA. It doesn't look much larger than your lawnmower battery. It has the North American battery posts so I bought replacement battery clamps, but I won't need to cut and strip the cables. All of the battery cables and wires have 8mm ring terminals which I can secure using the cable clamp bolts on the replacement battery post clamps. I'm going all out and replacing the fasteners on the post clamps to keep everything metric. Vehicles that are part metric and part SAE are a pet peeve of mine. I need to fabricate a battery cover. I had an 8"X12" sheet of 1/8" aluminum sheet I was going to use but I decided to use a sheet of textured black marine nylon instead. I'll scallop the top edge to provide clearance for jumper cables.

WoW! You are really putting in the work on your truck. I went the simplest route just for battery. As long as it starts I am happy. I'm sure your way would be better in those northern states.

@@mistertyspy - The 640 CCA battery was my fallback plan. I considered bending the rear wall of the battery box horizontal and adding a much larger deep cycle marine battery. The idea was to provide instantaneous current needed for intermittent use of a large inverter powering my 120 VAC chainsaw or a small contractor's table saw in the bed of the pickup. I could leave the Hijet idling at 2000 RPM so the alternator charged the battery, operating as a very inefficient generator. There's a decent chance the 35N battery will power the chainsaw through an inverter, at least for occasional intermittent use. When considering keitora upgrades I'm always waffling between More Cool Features and Keep It Simple Stupid.

@@Liberty4Ever That's actually a good idea. I plan to take the truck camping and that extra battery power would seem handy in different situations. Was also thinking of getting a Jackery to power up anything I need while I'm out there. We'll see down the road.

@@mistertyspy - I also gave some thought to a diode isolated LiFePO4 battery that could charge from the alternator and discharge for off-the-grid or work stuff and not drain the truck's primary lead acid battery. It could also be a temporary installation that plugs into the cigarette lighter port with a 2A or 5A DC-to-DC converter that isolates it from the truck's charging system and charges the LiFePO4 battery at a slow and safe rate. For a more permanent deep cycle battery installation, there's a lot of space between the frame and below the bed. That might also be a good place for a secondary fuel cell to add another 10-20 gallons of fuel for much greater range.

I been using that same brand( they come in 3 cca ratings) in my 2.3 accord and in my wife s 05 1.7l civic. Absolutely NO PROBLEMS! People dont realize that most 4 bangers can crank and run just fine on these batteries which cost $35 to $55 after exchange and taxes. Why would you pay $150 to $200 on the OEM spec battery when you get the same lifepan of 3 to 5 years out of these, which can also be used in the lawn tractor. DUH. STICK IT TO THE MAN

A bit of advice for safety, Disconnect NEG/Ground first then the POS then Connect the POS first, that way if the a tool touches both POS and the metal of vehicle you don't get a spark/arc.

Good video. I recently imported from China a small excavator and I am thinking about getting a Kei Truck. I am trying to decide if I should bid at auction or use one of the re-sellers based in Japan. Since I am in Canada, the vehicle can be as new as 15 years old. Just curious, what price range do these go for at auction, in your experience? 2 quick suggestions; replace the red plastic cover over the positive terminal to prevent accidental short circuits. Secondly, when working with vehicle batteries, ALWAYS remove the negative first and THEN replace it LAST after the positive is re-connected. Again this will prevent accidental short circuits. Otherwise, it is very easy to cause an accidental short when attaching the positive cable. Thanks again for sharing!

Thanks for watching! I got it at the auction. Bided on 6 cars and after a month I won this for $1,480. I used Japan Car Direct to export to USA. I used Easy ISF to handle import. Picked it up myself at the port(made a video to that). Thanks for the tips. I should have removed the red plastic anyways since it wasn't really covering anything. I always forget there's a proper order to remove the terminals. Was too lazy to look it up. I'll definitely keep that in mind next time. Thanks.

I recently imported a 26 year old Daihatsu Hijet kei truck into the US and it was a hassle. I assume importing into Canada would be a hassle as well for someone who isn't a professional importer. Having imported a Chinese mini excavator, you should have some idea of the process, although there are probably additional regulatory hassles for an on-road vehicle. After many hours of online kei truck importing research that was going nowhere, I mostly gave up and used Eezyimport to act as my online import broker and they did the paperwork for me. Good luck! These little trucks are very simple and practical, particularly for use on rural property, in town or on secondary roads. I paid a ridiculously low $265 for my 1997 Hijet. It has 4WD and the HI/LO transfer case but no air conditioning or locking rear differential. It's in good shape for its age but I'm installing a new battery (one cell shorted so low voltage but it still started easily). The biggest issue was the blown clutch. That was probably divulged in the Japanese writing I couldn't read on the inspection sheet and was probably why the truck was only US$265. The new clutch kit is $240 and it's a 3-4 hour job for a backyard mechanic. I looked at a lot of 25+ year old mini trucks and they usually sell for US$1000-2000. I'd guess a 15 year old mini truck would be US$2000-3000. I paid $1935 to ship my Hijet to the eastern US coast. A friend purchased several of the Chinese mini excavators and should be receiving them soon. I think they have a similar mini practicality to a kei truck. I was going to mention the proper order for disconnecting and reconnecting a battery but you beat me to it.

Water isn't the greatest to use to clean off. Use some wd and paper towels. Water would just corrode it again faster.
