The roof you are creating will become a giant sail. The attachment bolts from the pony wall to the top of the container appear very vulnerable to wind uplift. There is very little surface area of the bolt heads/nuts. Consider some additional connectors like a Simpson Strong Tie connector.

Tim from Canada attention, Courtney and Riley. You were looking for a way to make support platform the easiest way to do this is to get an IBC tote… take the plastic part out this way you still have the cage.. with the cage you should be able to lift it with your skid steer…. this is also the best way if you were looking for a way to change lights in high places or are you just need an extra. platform/// 1 take ABC tote…/ 2 take the plastic container out of IBC tote….////3 no, you have a cage a platform you can use for anything to do with heights, and it will fit on your skid steer or tractor with forks

I am not the slightest bit surprised that Courtney did so well with the trusses. She is not the first I have seen, whose steady and reaction free hand, controls that excavator as the device to be tamed that it is. She may not be the first whose mastery of her skill set it perfect, but on those rough and ready big machines she has the finesse to just ensure that the right things happen, at the right time. That said, well done for getting the project rolling along so well, others have queried the water proofing between the exterior and those containers. I agree it is a great idea to ensure that any water, snow, or ice gets shed straight away from both the structure and the tops of those containers and not allowed to stand near what are vital structural parts.

I so totally interact with the children such that I do not spend so much time with the adults. And language is not an issue. I do not speak Vietnamese and the children, except for one, do not speak English. But, the children do grow up and some of the, now, adults speak English. Oh, the stories. Love your videos.

Oh, what fun. Thank you so much for letting us know about the 'downs' of your life. What words I have to describe my feelings and thoughts escape me, if I had them in my vocabulary, to explain my feelings this morniing watching your work progress. I am 75, nearing, very nearing, 76. Have spent time in the Sierra's so I understand, somewhat, the terrain. Your knowledge and youth is/are amazing. I can understand doing one video a week. Would like one an hour, but your viewers cannot get all that we want. Love your humor, industriousnous and all that goes with it. Adjusting to the OTJ learniing. I built a 500 gallon water system with a raised garden and cannot tell you how many times I had to sit back and regroup. I did succeed in the end, wasn't exactly pretty, but I did succeed. Your 'errors' have recovered so that they do look 'pretty'!!! You mentioned an open end building? I think you should consider sealing one end and putting in doors of sometype at the other. Maybe doors at both ends. I think that it should be enclosed. Your equipment and knowledge you have, the parts would be all the real cost to doing that. You two just amaze me. Thank you so much for posting!!!

Very creative build design and Courtney is a great Operator. Can you explain how you fortified the connection points to the container roof tops? When the roof is done, the wind could fly off and fly away from the containers like a wing. A possible solution would be to place longer bolts and use steel plate to sandwich upward from inside the container roof to secure roof. Just a suggestion.

I love the concept! I have a few things you might want to consider. The screws up into the studs through the bottom plate are good, but they’re going into end grain, which weakens the connection. Consider Simpson hurricane ties across the stud/plate connections. As a rule of thumb, cantilevered beams should go into the building twice as far as the cantilever to prevent uplift. Yours don’t appear to do that so I would reinforce the connection at the interior end. Third, if you’re not extending the tails of the trusses down to the containers, at least brace it similarly so that the whole roof can’t blow side to side. Can’t wait to see how it turns out, and I love the channel!

Those pony walls are a major weakness without diagonal bracing. Welding a vertical box tube to the back end of the container and bolting the pony wall to it would help a lot, especially if diagonals are welded to the tube bracing both down the length and down the end of the container roof. Welding in diagonals at the front would stabilize that end of the roof as well. When the roof gets a snow/ice load it will really strain the pony walls making them weaker to side loading.

@AmbitionStrikes, Riley, if it were me, I would attach hurricane straps from the trusses to the pony walls. You’ll be very surprised by how a mildly strong wind can lift a roof, and you really don’t want the hassle of repairing a possibly wind-damaged roof. Simpson hurricane straps are an inexpensive ‘piece-of-mind’ insurance. I would also use 2-20’x1/4”x4” steel flat bar, per pony wall, as strapping inside the container as an additional strap anchor to hold the pony walls to the container.

I put up a similar structure but in steel. I cut and joined 10" x 4" RSJ's and joined at peak with plates. Trusses were 44' long. They cantilevered and flew right past outside of containers. We didnt want water running down walls and wanted to keep containers "cool". I supported trusses with a 5' long 4" x 4" box section leg with a base plate pre drilled for large bolts. They landed on a pre tapped block that I welded on to edge of container, eight in all. I only had a larger mini tractor to use. Before I started I made a work platform with sliding handrails to give me access and safety. I was able to put my welder on platform and work of platform. Access was via ladder resting on platform. I made a sky hook (pole with a wee leg) mounted of loader bucket to give extra height that allowed me to hang trusses to position over landing blocks. Worked a treat. You could easily make a work platform that sat over your skid steer forks. The bit you would stand on would be about 3' above fork level. That way you get your height. Maybe a winter project. 😢 problem is getting like of welder on platform, mine was heavy. Yes, it's not self leveling but gives you height, a platform to work off, somewhere to put your gear, screws etc and safety.

Courtney mentioned in passing that that was the plan... but it's been a while and I haven't seen an update on the thing....and whozits idea of anchoring the roof down somehow is a really good idea.... 80mph winds could lift that roof easily cables or chains...something to tie the trusses to the ground and a big concrete anchor point maybe.... wind is fickle it can swirl around in odd ways and lift more than push sometimes, I just installed a portable garage and I really anchored it to the ground in 6 places because we have very high winds here...at ground level ! I had to chase down our trashcan that was loaded heavy...luckily I had the top lid tied shut ....it wound up almost a block away !

Looks like they will extend the tails of the trusses out over the top of the containers, so no weather will hit the pony wall. At least that's how I'd do it.

FYI The shear strength of nails is greater than that of screws. Everyone thinks if you use screws it will be stronger but that is often not the case.

plexiglass on your knee wall between every other truss or every third truss will allow natural lighting into your structure but keep weather out.. just a suggestion..

Another idea for repeatable cuts instead of the sharpie, clamp another piece of wood to the saw to make a stop block. Then you don’t have to line anything up. Just slide to stop and cut.

I agree with all of the comments regarding those rather small nuts and bolts on those roof supports. Those shipping containers are made of thin steel, it’s only the corrugations that give them any strength. So they need reinforcement. Soon before it gets windy!

Best wishes to you all and always on the edge of my seat for every post! ✨🌸💥🌸✨
