Putin's Road to War: Susan Glasser (interview) | FRONTLINE

In an interview for the FRONTLINE documentary “Putin’s Road to War,” Susan Glasser, columnist at The New Yorker and co-author of "Kremlin Rising," discusses how military force has been key to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s rise to power.
“One thing that you get from looking at the whole sweep of Putin’s two decades in power is to understand that, for him, the use of military force has accompanied every step along the way of his journey to become Russia’s longest-serving leader since Josef Stalin,” she tells FRONTLINE.
Glasser is a columnist and staff writer at The New Yorker. She previously served as editor of Politico and editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy magazine. She spent four years as a Moscow bureau chief for The Washington Post and is the co-author, with Peter Baker, of "Kremlin Rising: Vladimir Putin’s Russia and the End of Revolution."
The following interview was conducted by FRONTLINE's Mike Wiser on March 4, 2022. It has been edited for clarity and length.

President Biden(s!) is asking Congress for $13 billion for Ukraine. Where is the money for securing the US Southern Border? Thousands of people from all over the world, including Russians, invade the USA through the border Democrats are not interested in securing!! Why did not the Obama/Biden give these sanctions when Russia invaded the Ukraine Crimea region in 2014???? The small sanctions implemented gave Putin the green light for his current actions!! Why was Hunter Biden on the Board of Directors of a Ukranian energy company for $50,000 a month?? What about the evidence on Hunter Biden's laptop and his Chinese Communist connections!?!?

I look forward to a PBS programme on CIA backed coups in Iran, Chile, Guatemala. Obama's bullying of Uganda when a popular law passed in parliament but the Obama regime didn't like etc. I like the interview but there needs to be some examination of American deep state policies. The anti Trump hatred does not help either. No wonder so many Americans despise their own CIA Globalist elite. The CIA group think is amazing in this series. Is Putin great? No! Is Trump great? No! But the CIA group think is equally worrying in its hatred of Trump and worship of Obama, Clinton and Biden. Clearly the notion of democracy is a strange concept to the CIA.

I'm terrified. As a Russian who left twenty-five years ago I wasn't in touch with Russia much. In 2017 I met some people via internet and the level of propaganda was overwhelming. "What were they fed?" I grew up during Soviet era, left in the criminal 90s, lived in Canada long enough and changed a lot, and now this... I watch everything of worth from sources in Russian (including propaganda itself just to see to what extent they lie). I agree with Susan Glasser - he'll do everything he threatens to do and everything he promises to never do. He is the most dangerous man in the world. I'm terrified. Just terrified.

I am experiencing first hand the anguish and pain these Ukrainians are going through at the moment. We (a small group ) are assisting 2 ladies each with a 15 yr.Old daughter coming to our little village in Germany with nothing but a small rucksack. They have fled from Kiev. Their families and livelihoods have been torn apart. This past week has been extremely hard getting accommodation and furnishing it for them. I mean these 2 ladies are economic graduates but feel like idiots because they don’t speak German. Fortunately one lady and the young girls speak a little Engli sh. They are traumatized with their young sons and husbands fighting to keep Kiev. One can c that they are afraid of every news they get from there. Their old parents are sitting in icy cold cellars. This is the reality of war. We are doing everything we can to make them comfortable but we cannot take away the pain and worry. A really extremely well put together and detailed picture of Putin. He got away with a lot of brutal military attacks in Georgia , Tschechien , Crimea , Donbas Region in Ukraine. He of didn’t expect the west to react in this manner. However, I know the sanctions are working but the private planes with these oligarchs are still landing in Dubai. Their money stashed away in Switzerland is not sanctioned. Many Germans are prepared to sit cold to stop Putin in his tracks.

I wish I was as sure about Putin as you seem to be. After seeing some other docs on the subject I'm not as convinced as I once was. I want to believe Susan Glaser but in all reality there are so many more moving parts to this file. Azov Battalion for example and the history of Ukraine for another give me pause. Susan is very well versed but wonder if this is actual truth. I mean WMD was a shoe-in, according to Colin Powell(RIP) and look what transpired there. Like I said, I'd like to believe her but there are too many unanswered questions here to just take her word for it. The way Susan portrays Putin is merely opinion and even propaganda. Will have to do much more research on this one. All is definitely not as it may seem.

Most likely the real reason was that Ukraine was considering to join EU and potentially competeing with Russian gas and mineral exports in future. This is a fascinating interview, and I learned quite a bit. I can't say i feel any better for it though. The subject matter is so grim it still blows my mind that three weeks ago, people were going to work, restaurants and pubs in Kyiv, living a normal life, and now the entire, beautiful country full of beautiful people is in flames. Is an unforgivable crime against humanity. If there was ever any justification for an assassination, this is it. For this, I live in hope.

I think the bottom line is that democracy works. The people need to have the ability to discard any leader that takes them down a path that they revile or disagree with. When power is given to one individual with no checks and balances, narcissism can take hold and be detrimental to the masses. Democracy saved America this time! Thank you (again) to Susan Glasser and Frontline for an excellent presentation. One point that (to my knowledge) has not been raised in any of the Putin Files, is the psychology of the abuser. I reference a book by Alice Miller “It’s For Your Own Good”, the subject is serial killers. In her book Alice Miller’s hypothesis is that serial killers original wounds are being acted out in the torture that they inflict on their victims. In the case of Putin (brought up in a war flattened Leningrad) his regime carries out a serial recreation of what happened to Leningrad, right down to starving the population. Could it be of any help to consider this aspect in attempting to formulate an response to Putin’s pathological behaviour pattern?

I dont think this is a precursor to WWIII. The most similar moment in history to this Ukranine invasion is when the Soviet Union toppled the anti communist Hungarian rebels in the 1950s. Obviously it didn't have much of a global impact. Now, if China decides to make a move on Taiwan, then I think saying it would be justifiable to label this as WWIII. I'm not trying to marginalize the current Ukranian struggle, but I think 2 years from now it will be totally forgotten on the global scale. Most likely a cop will shoot a PoC and we will all stop giving a shit about Ukraine.

Not just brilliant but prudent. When a dictator declares on war, his enemies need to stand up to him. Cutting him off from markets, trade, banking and travel is standing up to him. Ukrainians have showing their Russian cousins that their destiny, their freedom lies in their hands, not Putin. We have to stay course and cut off all ties to the Western World and our non-Western allies in World Peace. Putin oligarchs and the people will turn on him.

I hate to dash your hopes, but brilliant isn't the term I would use to identify our current leaders. I think they have done a good job so far though, but you know, who cares what I think, lol.

Are you joking????? Have you not been watching OUR COUNTRY being destroyed by the tyrants you dummies wanted in the White House The shocking part is that you idiots still listen to all this bs and actually believe it lol How many times did you dummies have to touch a hot stove before you learned your lesson? We tried to tell you all that everything your side has said about President Trump was a lie but it’s sad it had to come to this before you grow a spine and do what’s right instead of just what you think all the other dummies wanted you to do GOD BLESS AMERICA

Putin didn't say "speak clearly", he said "speak straight (get to the point)". In this context, Putin obviously didn't want his subordinate to speak clearly or clarify what he was saying, he already had enough of him doing a poor job at that. Putin was impatient and wanted him to get to the point.

@@kel5423 I saw the interview for this frontline series with Julia Ioffe, who was born in Russia, After moving to the USA as a child she returned to work in Russia as an American correspondent. She said what K El’s wife told him. I am gonna believe native speakers, as in English, context, emotional expressions, even traditions can slightly alter the exact intent of a statement. Like when a known mafiosi asked a rival how’s your family? they are issuing a veiled threat or at very least a reminder of how they play there game. The fact that the admonishment was telecast says Putin is reminding everyone - world wide that he alone has command over every aspect & action taken by Russia.
