Legal protection did not exist for him at the time. According to Snowden himself: "President Obama also reformed a key executive whistleblower regulation with his 2012 Presidential Policy Directive 19, but it exempted intelligence community contractors such as myself". The other side of this is that, should he get total leniency from the US, it gives tremendous precedent to future intelligence leaks which, right or wrong, can harm legitimate intelligence efforts. This is because compartmentalization means that not one person has access to all of the context and tie-ins behind intelligence data. So, by revealing a ton of it, like Snowden did, not only does that person shed light on something that may be totally illegal, but can also impact legitimate operations and endanger lives. Heck, just look at the (apparent) panic happening over the documents Trump had locked up in a basement somewhere. They are going after a former president. Who is Snowden? You know what I mean?

He IS helping Russia. Even downplaying the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Fact is though? He'd have always gotten a public trial. Even Chelsea Manning's trial, another trial that dealt with classified information, was ultimately held in public court. For all the problems the US has, secret criminal courts are not one of them.
