Okay so Perrito When he tells Puss and Kitty his backstory, he tells it like it’s a joke. Wraps it up with “and I guess I never found em, so I’m still it!” Yet when he talks to Goldi, what does he say? “From one orphan to another, you hit the lottery” He knows he’s an orphan. He knows what his family tried to do to him. But he is *such a good boy* he doesn’t want his friends to be bummed out by the weight of it all. Perrito is *the best boy*

No one ever noticed him throughout the entirety of the movie, and even in a chaotic situation, you're gonna notice a 9ft tall wolf in a poncho whistling. I think having Jack Horner being pure evil actually helped combat the "too many characters" issue. If Jack Horner had more character development then it would've added more time to the movie and taken away from Goldi, Kitty and Puss. He also allowed them to come together to defeat something. It made it so Goldi and the bears didn't have to remain the villains. Basically it was really just Puss's gang, and Gold's gang, versus a force of nature.

Also, I forgot about this the first time I saw it, but the cricket (with the help of the phoenix) is the one who actually destroys the map and seals Jack's fate in the end, and I love that. He was such a minor character who basically existed just to make Jack funnier, but he was also the only one who really had a deeply personal stake in wanting to take Jack down. Everybody else wanted to stop Jack because he was bad and getting in the way of their own quest, but they didn't really care about taking him down personally. The cricket was the one who really deserved to give a final "fuck you" to him.

I actually think Jack should've been cut from the movie altogether. Maybe that's a controversial opinion, but I think he took away from the theme of the film, which summarized in one word would be: Perspective. Everyone was having a struggle with themselves, not with some external force. Even Death wasn't really an external force. He was a manifestation of Puss' problems, his reckless behaviour. Once Puss changed his mindset, Death left him alone. The map and the forest were the most effective showcases of this. Goldilocks, Puss, Kitty, they were all rotten in a sense. Puss was afraid of the future, Kitty was bitter about the past, Goldilocks was upset about the present. Perrito however didn't care. He didn't have a wish. He was just happy to be with his friends. His core was pure, and so the forest was beautiful. The struggle of the characters was overcoming themselves, their traumas. Jack took away from that by just being a clear cut bad guy. You could argue he was there precisely to create a clear disparity between inner VS outer battles, but I think he took away from an otherwise perfect film.

  • @DoubtlessCar0

@@TheStraightestWhitest I mean I just disagree. The theme of the movie isn’t perspective. The theme is that you need to enjoy and value what you have. Because of that Jack Horner is actually incredibly vital to the story. He had a great upbringing, but never appreciated it because he was greedy. He’s also a foil to Perrito. Perrito had nothing but enjoyed everything he had so he isn’t greedy. Sometimes movies aren’t about telling a realistic story with super complex characters, sometimes a character is a symbol. Jack Horner represents what happens when you allow obsession and greed to take over. He’s basically like a dragon. He’s just a greedy monsters

@@DoubtlessCar0 ''I mean I just disagree. The theme of the movie isn’t perspective. The theme is that you need to enjoy and value what you have.'' That's LITERALLY what perspective is. Everyone was stuck up on a future fear (Puss), past trauma (Kitty), or a not good enough present (Jack/Goldilocks) when they already had everything they needed. Of course the entire theme was perspective. Same with Shrek 4. How do we know? Because what actually changed from start to finish? Nothing. Everyone's ending position was the same as their starting position. The only thing that changed was their perspective. Identical plot to Shrek 4 in that regard. Jack is the exception because he died, but that's the theme of the film being driven home. Change your perspective, or die. That's literally how Puss ''beats'' Death, Death says it to him outright. This is why I said, Jack did have one use, and that's driving the theme of the film even further. But I actually don't like how obvious they made it. The subtlety of its theme during the early to middle parts of the film was far more effective than the on the nose finale.

@@TheStraightestWhitest ok first off. Perspective isn’t a theme, it’s a motif, and you can understand based off how vague that word is my confusion. Perspective is literally just the hero’s journey. You can’t say the theme is changing your mind because that happens in every story! I think you also miss a huge aspect that this movie is about GREED. You should value what you have and not want more. Just like any story with a magical wishing item. The theme is that greed is bad not “you should reconsider your position on greed” it’s just greed is bad. Also what’s wrong with an obvious villain? A lot of people like an unapologetic villain. This isn’t Everything Everywhere all at Once, this is Puss in Boots 2!

@@eyeknow8009 I understand that it's ultimately an expression/compliment, but it just feels like it ties into the generalization of many people assuming if something is animated then it's just for babies. Then these people are baffled when an animated film like this is incredibly engaging with a vibrant action filled animation style accompanied by a creative and emotional story with great characters. I just keep seeing people basically say, "This kids movie has no right to go this hard and I didn't expect it to entertain an adult like myself." Yes they're saying it's great, but so many people have admitted to begrudgingly going to see this "kids movie", then coming out of it completely surprised. It's almost as if there is a metric fuckton of people that dgaf about animation unless it is strictly advertised to be for adults. Animation is a visual medium, meant and capable to tell several genres of stories. Fuck, Avatar 1 & 2 are technically fucking cartoons with a few live action characters sprinkled throughout, and other than the opening shot, there was NOTHING live action in the shitty Lion King remake. But those have realistic textures and attempts to mimic real life movements. Whereas if a film looks "cartoony", it unfortunately falls to the wayside of people's expectations leading them to assume it's for toddlers. So when people say, "it has no right to go this hard", it feels like most of them say it because they didn't expect, what they assumed was a baby kids movie, to rope them in and keep them engaged and entertained in many ways that a little kid can't really understand or appreciate. I guess my point is we all shouldn't always just assume animated films, even those with talking animals, are just for little ones. Films like this are created with the mindset that their story and characters can also be appreciated by an adult audience.

But this character only ever made light of his OWN issues. He had good advice, he gave Puss an... Actually sort of better than nothing stick, he was the get-away driver, he had the right type of heart to hold the map and helped traverse it, and when Puss had a panic attack, he was there for him, no questions asked, no judgement given. He actually pulled his weight and brought something to the journey that the other two didn't - and he never put the other two down while doing it. Even when he got captured, he actually ended up helping one of the antagonists as well with their own struggles. He's just... A dog. This movie goes so ridiculously hard. I went to see it with my family and grandparents expecting a dumb, cheesy, lazy sequel that would go straight to VHS, and I was so refreshed. It was awesome and so artistically revolutionizing to see so many elements from spider-verse appear in the animation and movement, and I realized just how long it had been since I had seen a good animated movie. It handled literally everything so gracefully, from the amazing character writing and designs, to the way that the mature themes were presented. Puss’s panic attack scene hit me really hard as someone who gets panic attacks, and it was so comforting and appealing to see Perrito was there for him, especially from him mentioning earlier on that he wanted to become a therapy dog. The B-plot with Goldilocks and the bears was great, and showing that they still were willing to help her get her wish because they loved her. Death’s character was absolutely terrifying, as someone whose greatest fear is death; It was chilling hearing his whistling, and seeing how puss tried to come to terms with his mortality. This movie lovingly shook me by the shoulders, yelling “Yeah, you only get one life, but doesn’t that just make it all the more special? To fulfill it with memories and experiences, and people you love?” An overwhelming 11/10, I cannot wait to get it on disc so I can watch it over and over again.

I always thought that panic attacks were in peoples head, and that they were either over exaggerating or flat out lying for attention. I know that’s a bad way of looking at it but since I had no experience, how was I to know. But that scene showed me how serious it can be, and just how it feels, it felt like I was having a panic attack with him with the heart beat going on in the theater. I will from now on take panic attacks that happen to my family or friends way more seriously and it’s all thanks to this movie.

I mean there are a lot of better ways to get attention than lying about panic attacks. Only a minority of people would be scummy enough to lie about something as serious as mental illness and crimes. For communication to work, you need to assume that other people are telling the truth and that people want to tell the truth. If everyone was distrustful of others then communication falls apart because then no one will be able to tell what is true or false and there would be no point in communicating ideas and thoughts. Obviously people lie for their own benefit, but I like to believe that most people care about the truth and want to communicate it and only a small minority of people would make crazy lies. I mean there is no way to verify what other people are thinking or feeling, that is the reason we communicate with each other, so the best thing you can do is accept what someone is feeling and if you later find out they can't be trusted then you can deal with them how you like. I mean if someone lies about a mental illness or something for attention and you give them attention and then you find out their lying you don't lose much. You just gave them your attention and now you know they are not a good person because they lied about something serious like that and can cut them out your life or whatever. But if they weren't lying, which I think the majority of people would not lie about something like that, then you gave attention to someone that actually needed it and you helped them.

  • @kuchuyobenai9461

    @kuchuyobenai9461

I would also like to say that truth is very subjective. Even the most objective field, science, is tainted with bias and is constantly updated and we always learning and changing up facts. Like if you think about it a little, you'll find that there is nothing you can really say is true for certain, obviously there are facts in this world, but I just mean like in general things concerning truth, such as documentaries, news, even history. Like you know how American history is written from the perspective of the colonizers so they are painted out to be heroes, when they committed a lot atrocities, even if you believe the original settlers were horrible you can agree that things can be changed and warped. Also, I would like to point out that the point I'm making contradicts my earlier comment. I saying people are biased and can alter the truth, but that we should trust people. I think that people want to be honest and want to try to reach the truth even if we do lie sometimes. I think you can agree that you want to reach the truth or try to be as close to it, right? Anyways, I say all this to make the point that one of the things we can be certain is the "truth" is what you feel. Like if you feel mad, then your feeling mad. So when someone says they are having panic attacks or when half the population of earth says that periods hurt like hell, then I choose to believe them, because are large group of people are experiencing similar things, so it wouldn't make sense for a large group of people would all lie about the same thing. Yes individual people can lie or exaggerate, but the least we can do is acknowledge someone's feelings. Because we all experience emotions such as anger and happiness so we know it's real. But when it comes to things like being transgender, gay, being black, etc., not everyone can relate so people dismiss those feelings. That's wrong to do though. We are taught in western society to just value logic and reasoning, and that feelings are not important, but they are fundamental to who we are and its wrong to cast away that side of humanity and to demonize it and we do demonize feelings because men make fun of you for crying or people say women are to emotional. Society has associated feelings with femininity and demonizes anything feminine because of the patriarchy or whatever. Also, I would like to say that logic and reasoning is important too, I don't think feelings are better, but I also don't think its worse.

He was just doing his job, fulfilling his purpose with some passion, and he had a valid points about having 9 lives and not valuing them, while other ones have only one. And he wanted Puss to pay for his arrogance. And he's right. He didn't just hate puss, as we see in the last scene when he sees he's now reconsidered his values and treats his life with respect, so he just leaves him be. He didn't try to kill it just for villain's sake. If he's a villain, what bad thing he does? Punishing the ones who treat death like a joke, wasting their live(s), as if it was something good? Also, would be a sick thing if he appeared behind every person that died on this movie, mostly Jack's workforce. And every time he would grin to Puss like "See, that's coming for you as well"

Actually he was the true incarnation of what a villain is and/or should be. What sets a villain apart from other "bad guys" isn't the fact their evil or have some lack of morality. It's those who commit such atrocities with a sense of purpose, depth, and an idealism that not only makes sense but is hard to deny.

@@smharyanto4660 Not villain, antagonist. Theres a difference. Villains are evil. Some have a reason for what they do, some do for the sake of it (like Jack here), some are redeemable, some are not. Antagonists *CAN* be villains, but they don't *HAVE* to be (They could even be what in other stories would be the protagonist, if we are following an antihero). A antagonist is a story telling device which motivates the protagonist. Jack Horner here is a Villain, but no antagonist. He doesn't motivate the protagonist to go for the wish, Death however does. Death likewise is a antagonist, but not a villain.

YES! Perrito felt like he'd be such an annoying character at first, but he was such an adorable little cinnamon roll, with past experiences that would have left many a person traumatised for life. Does he let any of that stop him? No! He goes from an annoying character, to an incredibly inspiring one so quickly throughout the story it's crazy just how well thought out he is. He's the best darn therapy dog anyone could ever have. Also the little derpy looks he gets are amazing. Death was such an intimidating character, and I still can't get over his awesomeness. Heck, one of the lines in his first scene was so well played. "Everyone thinks they'll be the one to defeat me. But no one's escaped me yet." That seems cool at first. A fairly standard brag. But when you learn who he is? It goes from a brag to a logical promise. That followed by the psychopathic stalker whistle tune that makes his presence entirely known to all, characters and audience, and the fact that he's the main driving force behind Puss's motivations throughout the story. Also, the fact that Death pushed Puss to the point of full blown panic attacks was just... chef's kiss. Also, one thing of major note is how he's made up of a variety of personification's of death. The Wolf. The Hunter. The sickles. The Red. Jaws of Death. The arm bands. The cloak. The coins over the eyes. His design is a collection of concepts from a variety of cultures, and it is fierce. He's one of the best villains in theatres for some time, and the beauty of the character is that he only shows up from time to time to remind the main character of the fear of mortality. It's so well played, and I can't get enough of it! Every character has such wonderful motivations, even Mama Luna... who was everything a crazy cat lady needed to be. Even Jack Horner, who as you said is just so singlemindedly psychopathic for the sake of comedy was well played with the amount of other depth on display. Honestly. I stood where you stood. I scoffed at watching a Puss in Boots movie. It was better than it had any right to be.

Probably one of the reasons is that they didnt ridiculized him by having him do goofy stuff Disney style, nope, they actually Made it clear that this character was not to be messed with, Death didnt crack a single joke or goofed up, nor did it get overpowered by the protag, they threated Death (the character) with respect, just as you would threat Death the concept with. This movie was funny, emotional, action packed and SERIOUS when it needed to be. Really they respected the intelligence of their audience and it shows with this amazing storytelling. Unlike the last animated movies this years that ruin every possible deep moment with lame, cringe or trendy jokes (looking at you Disney). Bottom line, this movie is a masterclass on how to do a movie for children that adults can also enjoy.

I can personally say that this is an example of a character being deconstructed properly. Added to that, they reconstruct him without losing his core character as Puss. A lot of writers deconstruct characters poorly and mostly never reconstruct them back up to be better people. The usual next thing is there is a new one that will replace them which most of the time will not land to majority of the audience. Examples of these were Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett, etc.

The whole thing with Puss accidentally grabbing the map and changing the terrain and getting himself trapped was so cleverly done. While I didn't love Jack Horner's design or the voice (John Mulaney is just too recognizable for me to get lost in the character), I really liked that we got an antagonist that was goofy and straight up evil that gets defeated, as well as an antagonist who's badass but actually right, and ultimately isn't defeated, just reasoned with. We get kind of the best of both worlds. And genuinely any time the wolf appeared was so brilliantly handled. The editing and sound design and striking visuals were totally on point. I also like that it doesn't beat you over the head with death's real motivation either. He just teaches puss his lesson, shoots him a grin and leaves. Up to you whether you were paying attention or not. Oh, also note for pig if he sees - don't bother watching the first one honestly, it's pretty fuckin boring, you didn't miss anything.
