How I Shoot season 3 is slowly coming to it's end and after this one there is only one episode left. In today's video I am pushing Kodak Tri-x 400 two stops to 1600 and I shot the film with my Hasselblad X-Pan in Bangkok. These days I shoot more color than black and white and this was only the second time that I shot Trix-400. Usually, I shoot HP5+ which is a film that I really like for it's versatility.
Scanned and developed at home. I used Kodak HC-110 (B) developer.
Hope you enjoy the episode, see you in the next one! :)

You nailed it man. It was like a fast video game. The lady with the umbrella is my favourite. Trix and xpan is a killer combo.

Love the combination! Though, to be fair, I think I'd love the X-Pan combined with anything. The picture of the lady and daughter at 6:39 is my favorite - beautiful composition & light.

Hello Robin👋! Again, a lot of very nice pics🤩👍! My favorite is the lady at 5’40’’. Very nice combination of shadows and light. All in all I am really astonished how good this ISO 400 rated film looks when pushed to 1600. And again it’s amazing how close you can get to the people without any problem😅!

Cool camera👍
They were beautiful. If you don't mind what were the Aperture and Shutter speed did you use?
Great job with composition and finding frames that tell a story! Did you push to 1600 in order to get f11 as it looked like a warm summers day where iso 100 works well!

Thank you! First and foremost I wanted to get more contrast. A positive side effect was that I could stop down the lens while keeping reasonable shutter speeds.

I liked the Tri-X pushed. The photos this time around looked great. Are people in Bangkok as casual about having their photos taken as they appear in the video? If so, nice to see that urban paranoia isn't everywhere.

Fantastic results and amazing that people were so open to being photographed. What aperture and shutter speed were you using when pushing to 1600?

It doesn’t matter if people are open or not. Just work
The last picture is interesting because it still has some information in the lights. were you able to recover the lights in post-production or were the images presented without post-production (directly from the scanning device and embedded in the video)? sorry for the many questions. thank you for the video.

Thank you! Scanning always has some editing involved, especially if I do it myself since I use a mirrorless to digitize my negatives.
Great video and even greater photos! Do you remember the aperture and the shutter speed settings during this shooting?

the_real_sir_robin thank you for getting back! So you pushed a stop with an ISO and a stop with aperture/shutter speed.
I'm partial to the X-Pan videos because of the cinematic look that Robin is mastering the compositions within. Liked the inky blacks in this one and am wondering what a night shoot would might look like.

Of course, it's an option too. I push HP5 for instance mostly in the daytime.
4:42 👍🏻👍🏻 4:56 Good reflexes Well about combination X-Pan with anything is always good 🙂. The thing that I don’t understand is push to 1600 to shot in good daylight. I always have seen push as a recourse when the film nominal speed not match to available light. May be I’m too old because even in digital I refuse to use high ISOs until it’s absolutely necessary 😀.

Thank you! It's to get more contrast out of the film and to be able to stop down the lens a bit more.

Hello Sir Robin! Does the Sunny 16 method works even if you’re pushing the film? for example im shooting the tri x at 1600, 1/1000, f16
@therealsirrobin

Of course it also applies when pushing film. However, I barely use sunny 16. I got pretty good at guessing and that works for me personally just fine.

@@therealsirrobin I am using the Nikon F3HP since I am using more modern lenses (Milvus 2/50 and Milvus 1.4/85) I get more in focus at wide f-stops. Lets say 70%.
I’m relatively new to shooting film so bear with me on this question: To push 400 speed film to 1600, do you just set the ASA dial to 1600? Or did you “push it” during developing?

@@nickfanzo okay so why not just use 1600 speed film then? Is pushing (and developing) 400 speed film to 1600 have any benefit over just shooting 1600 speed film?
@nickfanzo
Жыл бұрын
@@alexblaze8878 it has a different look to it . When you push you are making your shadows dark and under exposed. People push when they want that high contrast (black shadows) look. If you use 1600 speed film you will still have shadow detail and less contrast

I'm still confused when it comes to pushing film. Does pushing to 1600 mean to set the camera's ISO to 1600? Or is it solely done in development?
@klaushuxley3342

You do both.
@proletenschwein
4 жыл бұрын
vanslem6 so when I want the film developed, I tell them I pushed the film to ISO 1600 so they do the same?
@klaushuxley3342
4 жыл бұрын
@@proletenschwein Yes, tell them to push the film +2 stops. They'll likely charge you and extra couple dollars, and I either write 1600 or +2 on the notes part of the film canister. Keep in mind though it won't make the camera see in the dark, you still need some light. Of course if you shot the roll at 800 you would have them 'push' process the film 1 stop. You could also have the lab 'pull' the film if you were to overexpose it by doing the opposite (-1, -2, etc.), however, generally people overexpose the stuff on purpose and process normally.

It gets really contrasty. Not really my cup of tea the way it reproduces skin tones that way. HP5 pushed at 1600 seems more suitable IMHO.
