They messed up Purple Pikmin badly in Pikmin 3, so what did they do to fix them in Pikmin 4? At long last, the incredible Pikmin 4 has been released to us all after a whole decade! There are so many things to talk about, but first, let's discuss the changes made to the Purple pounders.

@@wurtknurte7283 as someone whos beaten all four games, i fully agree. although pikmin 4 for the most part was pretty great overall i found that there were just things here and there that could've used some more time in the oven. i really hoped it wouldve been like pikmin 3's overworld- arguably the best in the series, but sadly most, if not all of the gameplay took place in caves like pikmin 2, whereas the surface was kinda just there to get you to the caves and had very little engagement or content
I think it's worth noting that you're limited to 3 Pikmin types at a time, so you're not always gonna have purples with you unlike in 2. Since most players will just go with the 3 types that the game recommends you use for any given area/cave, which doesn't include purples very often, it makes them feel much more unique when you do get to use them. If they didn't have that strong initial thud attack, you might as well always go with Rock Pikmin instead of purples since they also are great fighters and have a strong "collision" attack, not to mention they're immune to getting crushed unlike purples. In my opinion the purples are very well balanced in this game. Not to mention the purple union is at the end of the long and challenging sage leaf gauntlet, most players won't get it until very late into the game, if not during post-game *after* the main story, so it's not a big deal that you can "easily" farm them at some point.

I think making the purple onion the most difficult to obtain provides much of the balance. They are the strongest but there are still creatures and hazards that can hurt your population. Having an unlimited source of purples in the endgame is a great reward for players who put in the effort to get there.
It's really surreal to be able to make as many purples as you want after so many years of playing Pikmin 2, having to use candypop buds.
I’ve been testing purple pikmin’s impact damage! they usually deal double or more the impact damage of rock pikmin, it varies per enemy, but purple’s impact damage doesn’t activate during oatchi rushes, they also only deal the same damage as red pikmin if they fail to activate their impact damage. This differs from rock pikmin who can’t latch on at all but their impact damage activates during oatchi rushes, rushing with rocks on oatchi is like throwing half the number of purple pikmin except it registers instantly. I think purples slam is still a little too powerful, it should probably be the same as rocks so they’re like a compromise between rocks and reds imo.
@EarthRyno
11 ай бұрын
Well said. The balance of purples and rocks just feels like it’s in a weird spot. Currently, purples do a better job at what rock Pikmin should be doing with throw impact. Rocks don’t really have a use outside of breaking glass. I will say it feels so good to do an Oatchi rush slam with a bunch of rocks and just watch them melt an enemy. I just wish throwing a bunch of them felt as good.
Pikmin 4 is definitely the most balanced. The only Pikmin that were somewhat underutilized were the Winged Pikmin, which don't have a lot of specific required uses. Pretty much every other type has a lot of required puzzles and hazards and the fact that you can only have 3 types at once further helps to make every type feel useful. For the first half of the game, I found it super underwhelming how little the reds were used. Blue Pikmin and Ice Pikmin had the most use, and there were puzzles and high places for Yellows... but then during the second half of the game they introduced a new mechanic with the burning charcoals to make reds useful again! They even had a cave in the house area that could only be entered with reds (I wish they had one for yellows too though... blues had the Engulfed Castle, but yellows didn't get their own cave). Winged and Rocks don't have as much main story use, but they make up for it by being utilized more in the Dandori challenges.
@yurei4414
11 ай бұрын
I like Wingeds not having required blocks anymore, because it balances them out. Now they're basically the purples for carrying. They're basically invincible when carrying (and can take shortcuts) but bringing them with you means you can't deal with an Hazard that taking another type could. Trading commodity for efficency, like bringing purples for combat. Tho, I wish they weren't this rare lol. I litteraly completed the main story without seeing one.

I enjoy being able to freeze enemies in the water. In the final cave with one of the Beady Long Legs, I had just enough Ice Pikmin to freeze the water, which made killing it comically easy.
I feel like purples are okay as is, because unlike Pikmin 2 you CANT bring them everywhere due to the type limit. Additionally, theyre pretty rarely found in Dandori Challenges/battles. They would be much more broken if bringing them to places didn't also force you to sacrifice another pikmin type.
Omfg I love pikmin 4 to death
I actually really like the niche that Purples have in Pikmin 4. They aren't stupid OP in the same way as in Pikmin 2, but they are extremely useful as trashkillers for when a bunch of weaker creatures are present. It kind of seems like that wouldn't be a huge deal but that exact scenario is present in a lot of caves and trials so being able to clear out rooms of weak enemies extremely fast feels like a great use for them. I also feel similarly about Whites, I never really used them in 2 because you get them too infrequently to have them be super useful outside of when they are needed and the poisoning enemies on being eaten doesn't feel good because you have to waste a rare pikmin to use it. But now that you can get white and purple onions, White pikmin are a great jack of all trades for building and carrying stuff.

I personally think they work really well the way they are Because yeah they're the best fighters, but aren't immune to any hazard, abd you're limited to three times at the time. So bringing purples means you're more at risk of hazards.
the biggest problem with purples in Pikmin 4 is that their impact damage when thrown completely overshadows Rock Pikmin. making rocks only useful for breaking crystal and avoiding getting crushed (which doesn't matter too much when you can just kill the crushing enemy instantly with purples instead)
@s.a0411

The sad thing about rock Pikmin in this game is that the crystal walls can also be destroyed with bomb rocks. And for crystal enemies, they can also be killed with Oatchi’s rush attack.
When comparing the purple and red pikmin's passive attacks; the red pikmin were flowered while the purple pikmim only had leafs, I feel like in order to truly test it they need to have the same stage (leaf, bud, or flower)
@RiDEL_Castro

The maturity doesn't effect attack speed or damage , only the movement speed of the Pikmin. Doesn't really matter anyways cause the Pikmin garden website confirms they have the same passive attack power at 1.5x
They're definitely good but the 3 Pikmin limit means I probably just won't be using them at all a lot of the time
I thought the exact same thing. It makes sense for the purple pikmin to deal impact damage, but a stun would be too OP. But it's weird how it also deals the damage when they land on the side of a creature.
something I found odd about purples in this game is that they are scattered by mitites now
I feel they are actually pretty balanced in this game. My reasoning being they only do that huge damage when thrown. If you charge with oatchi to launch all your pikmin onto an enemy they wont do that extra damage meaning you have to take more time trowing instead of all your pikmin just demolishing an enemy in a second
I saw you play pikmin 4 in the top left while i was playing too, made me miss your vids :p another banger fr
The trade off is that they are fairly rare to obtain until near the very end of the game and they're slower, so if they're shaken off by a creature they're more likely to get eaten or squished while being whistled back.
orange is now officially the only color not represented by a pikmin type
1:55 That sumo pikmin already just wanted to take this to the space ship. 🚀
That's kinda interesting that you basically have to choose between the stun you *now* get on Oatchi's charge after upgrading it or the high damage from just throwing the purples. Your reliance on that could affect whether you use purples or reds a little more. I'm definitely fond of the way most Pikmin are balanced in this game. Ice is definitely too OP though, literally just purple spray as a pikmin type. Not to mention if one gets eaten, it works like white pikmin and basically *instantly* freezes the monster
I definitely think that Purple Pikmin essentially having the Rock Pikmins Impact damage rather than the slam attack they're supposed to have is insane. It really should just be the slam because it invalidates one of the Rock Pikmins traits, just like they invalidated the Red Pikmins attack boost in 2. I do like how they have the shockwave that kills small things in a large radius though.

I have a feeling Nintendo, and more specifically Miyamoto were disappointed with how poorly the original 3 games sold and they have already said they wanted this game to be more user friendly. Making purples strong again as well as giving a purple onion is very helpful to that end. Pikmin 4 has already done better in its first week then the previous three did combined in their first weeks. I think they were getting people invested in these games so future ones can go back to the difficulty of the first 2 and still sell well.

Loved to see Purples again. I have several gripes with the game, but the 3 pikmin limit was certainly the worst part of it. I think the purple onion being a late game thing combined with the 3 pikmin type limit (but mostly just the 3 type limit) really balances purples.
I really like that the purple onion is locked behind the dandori gauntlet. I personally believe it to be the hardest challenge the game has to offer, moreso than its final boss, so it seems very fitting to have the most powerful reward locked behind the hardest challenge. Feels like a moment of "if you can beat this, you can beat anything. Go wild, enjoy the chaos." Also makes collecting that bar of gold a lot less time consuming.

(postgame spoilers) i saw in the last louie side quest that i had to go fight the sovereign bulblax again and i got worried, but i just chucked some purples at it and it died in like 2 seconds
Since I see nobody mentioning it I think your testing on the bulborb was flawed as the reds are flowered while purples are all leaves. So I assume purples would do more even upon charge attacks making them the strongest fighters in most any situation unless it's a fiery bulblax or something
Return of the king
Where did you get that purple pikmin pencil stand?! I need that in my life!
I never even knew Purples did more damage when thrown, I've been Rush Riding everything.
Lets not forget: Purple and white pikmin now have their own onions...i guess nintendo saw that one purple/white onion mod from pikmin 2
At 6:00 you show that they kill the bulborb at the exact same time, but also the purples were all Leafed, and the Reds were all flowers so it wasn't exactly a even comparison. If that is the case then i would imagine purples would be stronger when flowered than Reds.
i'd say they're more balanced due to the fact you get them later in the game compared to 2 where you get them at the beginning
keeping purples overpowered makes it more valuable to have to do some of the hardest challenges just to get them. It rewards you for going out of your way to get purples easier (even though caves are easy enough to grind wild purples.) You actually want a reason to go out of the way to get purples because they are worth using and you no longer have to worry about loing them (although if you're using purples i question how are you losing. They're purples). You took the time to get the onion you should get to use them however you want and they sure better be useful.
I think Purples are perfectly balanced in this game yes they are the strongest fighters but they appear late in the game and getting their onion is the hardest thing in the game this all paired with the 3 type limit really makes me use them just as often as any other type of pikmin. I genuinely cant say i used any Pikmin more than any other type and i platinumed and 100% completed everything in the game
Purple Pikmin are back. The balance is good because you’re only allowed 3 Pikmin at a time, so you can’t just bring purples everywhere.
if they really wanted to make purples a bit weaker, i think just making it so they have to actually slam onto the enemies to get the bonus damage would be a good way to go about it. that way, they have a clear time where they are most useful, that being against smaller enemies that they can successfully thud on, and they also have clear weaknesses, that being against enemies that are too high to slam on top of.
Ok so my main problem with the game is the controls! There are some aspects that would've been best optional or straight up should've been! My number 1 problem is auto lock on!!! It F'cking sucks!

as a die hard purple pikmin fan, it makes me so happy to see my little dudes come back after the mess that was pikmin 3 deluxe :)
Bu lt now with the 3 Pikmin type limit, the options to choose Reds or Rocks over Purples is more strategic rather than obligation.
The reason they are useless on pikmin 3 is because they were originally scrapped, and they forgot to recode it
I would only change one thing. I'd make the impact damage only apply to the proper slam. Everything else is fine.
I think the purples being the strongest fighters overall with the impact damage like the rocks and the latch damage like the reds is actually really balanced in this game. They’re still pretty slow, and they have the worst range because they fall early. There’s a lot of creatures that the purples completely whiff a lot of the time that any other type can hit. It’s also almost guaranteed that you get the purple onion last with how difficult it is to get. You have to be a pretty good player to get your hands on it, so purples won’t carry you through the game like they can in Pikmin 2. This game really did almost everything perfectly.
Collector: I’m about to announce in Twitter that I have completed the game in a entire week!
Honestly the only thing that I miss is the bubble Pikmin font it was really iconic in my opinion.
they basically took the concept of pikmin 2, streamlined it with ideas from pikmin 3 (and incorporated side modes into the main story), and then at least in the postgame, ramped up the difficulty to be a little similar to pikmin 1.
The same timing in the piklopedia was probably because you used flowered reds, but only leafed purples
I had a Pikmin 4 ad when I clicked on this video!
I’ve 100% the game after 35 intense hours and I saw a spoiler unfortunately before hand but none the less I was surprised to see more then three onions because I thought there were just gonna do red yellow blue and then make all the other Pikmin cave exclusives but I’m so glad they didn’t
Just beat it 100% love this game to death… haven’t had this much fun in recent memory
9:00 one thing i noticed is that the reds have flowers in this test, but the purples do not. The reds are attacking faster due to the flower, and the purples are at base attack speed. If this was changed, to either both flower or both leaf, i believe purples would win both.

where did u get those little pikmin figures
I wish that they were still immune to the fear state.
But have you tried oatchi charging with rocks? 🤔
Did you try using leaf reds and leaf purple for more accurate data
actually i tested out reds and purples (one thrown on with 9 reds to make it more fair with the latch attack to test) and reds do a little more damage, if you charge with purples it doesnt give latch on so i did that, (i tested this on a certain flying enemy instead of land) and then testing it purples do more of a 1.25x- 1.3x damage multiplier
I think it's fine for purples to be this powerful considering you get them so late and getting the purple onion is decently late into the game. More than anything I think there is so much choice in what to do when that there's going to be a lot of interesting speedrun routes over time.
How did you play as the captains that got put in the onion?
Pikmin 4 does balancing so well
I’m not sure if anyone else thought this, but I was happy to see blue PIKMIN we’re pretty viable in this game. There are just so many water hazards in almost every area that actually make them useful. I’m happy that these hazards give every PIKMIN the chance to shine in their own way, even if they aren’t overpowered when fighting.
