23:38 This is what a young Japanese woman said after seeing a concert by Metallica. "I am a little shaken inside. I am stunned with emotion. I don't want such a band to be called thrash. I think what everyone wants is this kind of heavy metal. As long as there are people who support such a band, I think the music of heavy metal will be immortal".

The death of Cliff did that to him. If you look for Cliff Burton's last interview with James Hetfield, James is still that kinda shy kid. Cliff was the only guy he really looked up to... oh... and Lemmy. So after Cliff died he basically tried to be Lemmy.

James with great answers. Probably one of the most revealing interviews. It shows the intention of growing up lyrically & musically. He opens up about the issues & topics of the songs: manipulation, freedom of expression, freedom of choice, the will of doing the right thing, of being true to what you like at a moment they were accused of "sellouts". The thing is Metallica is never afraid of trying new ways of reaching out to people musically.

@@wallywalpamur4960 I think it's called context. I used the preposition "a" meaning that moment in time ('89). I was just focused on showing what they were about with their songs, not implying that it was their first time of being called that way. Btw, ever since they started they've been a target of good and bad criticism. That's why they are still so relevant, I guess.

I love hearing all that late 80s pop/glam metal and then cutting to James during the _Justice_ era. All those bands pretty much disappeared soon after. It's a shame because I miss that style of music but I have to admit that it was so limited and narrow. Not even talking about grunge, there were other bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Faith No More and Suicidal Tendencies that needed to not be "Outshined" along with the likes of Soundgarden and Alice in Chains.

If it weren't for the damn record companies pushing them to tone down their heaviness and forcing them to make sappy ballads and wear more girly clothes, Glam metal wouldn't be shit on as much as it is nowadays. Thank God Metallica didn't go that direction or they wouldn't be the half the well-known legends they are today.

Never heard the TNT song at the beginning. It's actually really catchy! Metallica is one of my top 10 favorite bands and I love thrash metal, but how can anybody not like glam metal??? Just because everybody hated them in the 90's? People just follow what everybody else says about the genre and doesn't actually take the time and effort to listen to it without looking at the pictures/videos. If they didn't dress in that attire, you wouldn't say a DAMN thing about the music. (Plus, they had some of the greatest singers and guitarists of all time, Reb Beach, Vito Bratta, George Lynch, and Warren Demartini to name a few shred kings) (rant concluded)

@@adriancronin533 Not being aggressive when I say this but the logic on the Hetfield down hits and the Lars kicks doesn't make sense. There's no "up" bass. There's no bass at all. Am I missing something? I was 17 when this album came. I loved the album because of my feelings and youthful love of life in that time but I felt a twinge of 'this is missing some beef.' And after 'St. Anger' it hit home strong. This band, that now comes out with an album every 8-10 years, wasted time and legacy on dumb production issues/choices.

Also, I've heard 'amazing' 'poly and counter rhythmic' albums with good production back in 1987/1988 and before then. Better than the tin can production of AJFA, for sure. The album missed bass, no question.
