Pure Consciousness: Still Point at the CENTER of the Mental Storm

When the mind's turmoil becomes overwhelming, it can be impossible to maintain your attention on pure consciousness at the center of your being. But, you can discover those mental storms to be harmless collections of thoughts and emotions, as insubstantial as a soap bubbles.
Your essential nature is consciousness or awareness by which all mental activities (vrittis) are known is called atma, the true self, the inner divinity that is sat chit ananda, limitless eternal consciousness. That consciousness is reveals the vrittis of your mind (manas) without being affected by them, like the sun is unaffected by what it shines upon. Atma is the sakshi, the independent observer or awareful witness of all your thoughts, emotions, and perceptions.
Swami Tadatmananda is a traditionally-trained teacher of Advaita Vedanta, meditation, and Sanskrit. For more information, please see: www.arshabodha.org/

Indeed it's a blessing from Swami Dayananda Saraswati himself to have bumped into your channel. 🙏 I I had met Swamiji in Arsha Vidya headquarters in Annaikatti way back in 2013. He blessed me immensely and gave me an apple. I can resonate with every word that you have uttered on the torment that the mind suffers and struggles with these vrittis . the struggles of my mind has now reduced to a great extent by the grace of Devi.🙏🌺 I had a wide range of deep spiritual experiences which stirred up a great deal of muck which was unimaginable to process. Slowly, it settled and some clarity dawned. Very recently, I had this experience of falling into a black hole after which more clarity emerged in my inner space. Now frequently , during my sleep, I feel I am enveloped in a complete deep dark space and I realise this as I wake up, not when it is actually happening. I looked for many scriptural references to understand what was happening within me. I am unsure if I could draw any parallels so far. May I request you to give me any scriptural reference to these experiences and throw some light on this.🙏🙏 I do not have much knowledge of the Vedas and my quest for knowledge has intensified. I had a deep urge to read Nasadiya Suktam, which I was just not able to comprehend. While I did a search on KZread for the commentary, your channel was the first to appear.🙏🙏 It's indeed God's will that I am crossing path with you as a seeker! With much gratitude. Sree Matre Namah 🌺

This is good 🙏 The lap of Maya/Shakti always coaxes us back to the “center.” We think the storms are negative, but it is all Vidya Maya. All points us towards the calm eye and send us that direction whether we realize it or not. Thoughts are not real. But this thought 'The bill is coming' can stir the mind storm fiercely as well as its consequential thoughts so that I am totally lost and have no perspective at all. It affects me a lot. And when I finish my daily meditation, the bill comes in front of me, so real that I can not deny it. Thoughts can be harmless, but the worldly reality is so cruel . No any question, just think of this and share. Thank you for so vivid teaching again.

Given that the essence of the human problem is the identification with Vrritis and failure to know oneself as pure awareness, and given that the only way to conquer the vrritis is to gain the sure knowledge that one is limitless infinite awareness, this surely means that the start of spiritual practice is to become aware of being aware, abiding in awareness, since this moves us away from the Vriitis I to our underlying substance, and the middle and end of spiritual practice is this self same self inquiry. I.E. the traditional initial vedantic practice of karma yoga etc are only somewhat accomplishing indirectly the same separation of the vrritis from one s true self as awareness, but most mature modern persons are ready for the direct path of self inquiry, this inquiry distils the essence of all other spiritual practices hence the genius of ramana Maharishi s version of Vedanta, perfectly suited to the needs of the modern mind, whereas traditional Vedanta more suited to the social structure of Indian society which has more devotional and ascetic atttitudes.

We live in a world where few people have any idea that it is possible to find inner peace. Powerful distractions pull us in many different directions. None of them advance us in any meaningful way. Is this condition unavoidable? Is it in the nature of every human being to seek escape from that which binds us to a lesser existence?

Without knowledge and experience, it's very difficult to grasp. Because it's beyond our mind, body, intellect and perception. Swamiji's Guru enlightened him by saying, "why do you take your thoughts so seriously?" Another great teacher, Huston Smith, who has written extensively on religion, published back in 1958 a superb book, "The World's Religions," once went to a Zen center. He found the prolonged sitting to be quite miserable, all his joints were hurting, and he went and complained to the Zen master. The master struck him with a verbal bolt of lightning by saying, "ah, pain, health, these are all distractions. Set them aside and move on." And sometimes all it takes is to listen to a joke to break into a laugh and release the joy within. This web page featuring Huston Smith and Bill Moyers is superb: billmoyers.com/content/wisdom-faith-hinduism-buddhism/ I see, more and more so, that Swamiji uses Buddhist teachings and practice extensively. Nothing inherently wrong in that of course, but Hindu Gurus usually avoid the word "Suffering," which is constantly used by Buddhists. The Buddha did say that Dukkha exists. But our entire lives are not dukkha. Dukkha is not the essential nature of our lives. Yes, we feel like sh*t at times. We have pain. Financial strain. Emotional trauma. All kinds of things. It becomes very valuable to become an observer, to learn and practice mindfulness. There we go again, a Buddhist approach. Which is fine, really. It is invaluable to study and blend the teachings of Vedantha, Buddhism, Taoism and Zen, to really understand things. Buddhists stick to the word "Mind," and never venture into discussing Aathma. The Buddha persistently declined to talk about the Aathma. So Buddhists declared that their belief is in "Anaatha," or "no Atman." I sincerely believe that this is not what the Buddha intended. He just felt that such a discussion of the Aathma is not the way for us to be enlightened, rather that we need to follow what he called the "Noble Eightfold path." Honestly, if I hear the word "Suffering" once more, I'm going to throw up! :)
