Perhaps more than any other brand, Pure Blue Japan (PBJ) is known for their irregular, knotty, hairy, neppy denim. That means it's rough and fuzzy to the touch, demonstrating the very old fashioned method of making the jeans. This denim is human, and it tells a story.
I grabbed the NP-019, which has a relaxed tapered fit that suits my big ass and thighs.
DENIM
* 17oz heavyweight denim
* Dyed before weaving with powdered natural indigo
* Constructed from American cotton
* Feels like a suit of armor made from carpet
* Has great fade potential
* Indigo warp, undyed weft
This is the kind of denim that just has character.
COMPARE WITH IRON HEART'S SUPER SMOOTH DENIM IN MY REVIEW: • Iron Heart Jeans Revie...
DETAILS
* Indigofera leaf stamped on the butt
* Waist patch made from deerskin
* Patch depicts a guy dipping jeans in a vat of indigo dye
* Which is awesome
* Iron buttons with indigo leaf detail
* Light blue selvedge ID
It's also held together with long stitches, which is super hard to do and PBJ uses very modified sewing machines to do it. Practically no one will notice this, but it's one of the many touches that elevate these jeans.
WISH JAPANESE JEANS WERE STRETCHY? SEE MY REVIEW OF ONI'S SHIN SECRET: • Denim Review: Oni's ST...
CARE
* Everyone has different opinions, it looks like you can machine wash, hand wash, or soak
* Don't dry clean them
* Color will definitely bleed in water, wash it on its own
* Apparently they should be stored in a well ventilated area
FIT & SIZING
* I'm normally a size 32, but the 34 fit me fine.
* Will stretch in the first few weeks. They were too tight when I bought them, perfectly wearable the next day, and I started wearing a belt after a month.
PRICE
About $390 with taxes in store, but they're $290 on Okayama.
Denimio.com has a lot of PBJ jeans and if you make an account and use the discount code STRIDEWISE, you get a 10% discount: www.denimio.com/brand/pure_bl...
THESE JEANS ARE THICKER BUT PRETTY SIMILAR TO MY STUDIO D'ARTISAN JEANS, CHECK THE REVIEW: • RAW DENIM REVIEW: Stud...
PROS
* Very solid, sturdy construction
* No loose threads, really clean stitching, even after a month of wear
* Great iron buttons
* Dyed with natural indigo
* Fantastic fade potential
* Super slubby and neppy
CONS
* Too warm for mid-year wear
* So thick that they're not great for mobility
* They'll stretch a good couple of inches in the waist, just be prepared
* Some think the leaf on the butt looks like a stain

    Thanks for actually *wearing* the jeans and showing us how they look close up, back, behind, front, side, etc. Lots of youtube denim reviewers just hold the jeans in their hands only and you can't really get a feel for the shape, fit or characteristics of the particular denims. So I appreciate that. New subscriber here.

    Great video and has helped me do some denim research. I wanted to mention that I have heard on good authority from a denim retailer that the PBJ NP-019 features synthetic indigo, not natural. Maybe that's worth double-checking? 🤷‍♂️ Likewise PBJ's website does not mention a natural source for the dye of this cut. I suspect maybe this powdered indigo you mentioned = synthetic.

    Hey nick-- hoping you could advise here a bit more with your height + weight for sizing. Do you typically wear a ~17in waist for a mid rise? I'm about 190lb athletic build and prefer a ~17.25in for a mid low rise and am debating between a 33-34 for the 019 cut for a slim fit. I'm having a hard time gauging the rise and fit impact online

    Cool review, man. I'm another guy who likes to squat so fit is tough for me too. Looking at your video, I think the fit on you is still more than I'd feel happy with on my own body. Lately I've been looking for jeans with a gusset because crotch blow out is so frequent for me. It's so disappointing when you're paying big money in denim. I recently bought the swrv organic denim and so far so good. I'd like to see if you have any suggestions for gusseted jeans.

    @@Stridewise If you can still get the 211 Oversea Edition, the fit after a rinse is very similar to these PBJ's but unfortunately only a 32" inseam. As a former Rugby player I have the same fit issues as yourself but have a relatively short leg for my height so still get a reasonable single cuff with these jeans. The denim is also super irregular too, with all the usual Sammie details so should age beautifully

    Okayama is Japan’s historical center of indigo-dyed textiles ( _ai-zome_ ), so it makes sense that the country’s denim-making industry would set up shop there. (Knowing this, however, does not change the fact that the most expensive Japanese jeans I can afford are your mall-brand Edwins.)

    I got into selvedge exactly 1 year ago. And luckily the pair I ended up gravitating towards were a pair of PBJs (the ones that have these electric blue hue to them). Its the only pair of selvedge denim I have. I love them. The leaf on the back pocket is such a cook detail. The patch with the sumo dude dying his denim is nice too. They're only 14oz though. For my next pair I want a true slub

  • @wilsjane

    @wilsjane

    4 жыл бұрын

    +Zahinn. The whole thing about selvedge denim always makes me laugh. Few people seem to realize that all woven fabrics come off the loom with selvedge edges. In the past, it was retained, to save a double seam on the outside leg, but as production increased, it caused 2 problems. Firstly when cutting machines that cut several layers of denim were introduced, it was impossible to keep the layers in register. Therefore, the cutting worked from the center, the selvedge went to waste and machines were introduced to carpet stitch the outside edge of the jeans. Secondly, due to the increased demand for denim. factories installed wider looms. Therefore, even if the selvedge was retained, it would be on less than half of the jeans. This would have made volume production a nightmare. Today, smaller specialist companies have created a demand for retaining the selvedge, while saving the huge costs of the carpet stitching machines. Mainstream manufactureres have 'cashed in' by cutting a few jeans from the broadloom denim at the edges. Although they are cut from the same roll of fabric as other jeans, the price is higher. When you see a single strand of another color in the selvedge it is simply manufacturers loom identification. In the past, denim made to Levi's specification had a red strand. It is amazing how an industry can create fashion statements from changes in production methods. PS, Raw denim is another story. but very similar. Preshrunk denim was introduced when poly-cotton started being used for stronger seams at lower cost. If this was used without shrinking the denim, as the jeans shrunk in the wash and the seams did not, the stitching would come loose. You will occasionally see this on raw denim jeans today, where the manufacturer has overlooked the problem. You may be surprised that I have nothing to do with jeans manufacture, I deal with fabrics used for the restoration of historic buildings. LOL

    Probably pure blue japan, just because they're so weird :) Samurai I think is a good blend of weird and classic. Full Count is best for classic vintage look, I think. Iron Heart is thick and stiff but it didn't fit me very well, but it's the best for smooth tough denim.

  • @joelsa22

    @joelsa22

    3 жыл бұрын

    I don't have any experience with Nudie myself, but being a Swedish resident, I've seen a lot of Nudie in my days. I can't speak for elsewhere, but here they're about as usual as Levis or maybe Lee's. My guess is that they're a little too mainstream to appeal to the really passionate denimheads. Can't speak for quality, but they seem to be somewhat more ethically produced than Levis mainline, and perhaps better constructed with higher quality fabrics (turkish denim, cutting and sewing in Portugal). Hope i shed some light on the matter:)

    @@joelsa22 I see, so different perspective then maybe. And I'm just realised that I'm not that as denimheaded as i think. Because for me, like it or not, my denim is part of my fashion. I only wears cloth that I think, or maybe some people suggested, suits me, the body type, especially. I think ive seen thousand dollars japan denim with regular or pipe cut, worn by not-really tall asian guys (me as asian can relate), or the skinny cut worn by bulky dude. Man, denim is fashion, not a nuclear weapon. The bigger the blast the better and so on. For me, Nudie just providing the right things by giving so many options on cutting and fit. Respect, for this one swedish brand!

    mostly because they'll shrink a bit when i wash them the first time so I don't know what the length of the jeans will wind up being. I could have gotten some hemming done at the store but i was heading out on a trip and wanted a pair of jeans to wear so i just took them and rolled up the cuffs. another reason people do this is because of the selvedge ID that you can only see when the jeans are rolled up, that's a sign of higher quality jeans some people like to show off.
