Purdue chancellor mocks Asian languages at commencement

Purdue University Northwest’s Chancellor Thomas Keon mocked Asian languages at the school’s commencement ceremony on Dec. 10. In his apology, he said, "We are all human. I made a mistake." Read more: wapo.st/3PrQV1o. Subscribe to The Washington Post on KZread: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

Wow, as a 70 yr old Chinese-American born and raised in the US, the last time I heard something like this in real-life was from one of my grade-school classmates! The most disturbing thing is the University’s ready acceptance of Keon’s lame “apology”. especially since it just promoted its Chinese-born Dean of Engineering, Mung Chiang, to be University President-elect, starting Jan 2023. Curious to see if the Asian community at Purdue is able to do Dr. Mung a favor before he takes office by getting rid of Keon.

This guy isn’t sorry. He is sorry that he got caught. If this is how he talks in front of a commencement ceremony one can only imagine how he talks in private. It shows you that all of his “diversity” initiatives at the college are disingenuous. And nothing will happen to him. If he mocked African Americans like this he would be forced to resign the next day and there would be a national conversation. It just goes to show that Asian Americans continue to be treated like foreigners in this country despite doing everything asked of us.

I was a former PNW student in the Honors College. I interviewed Thomas Keon to learn more about his thoughts on the Honors College. He gave some thoughts, but they were not really measurable rather vague. Additionally, I also went to a Faculty Senate meeting to support a Math Ed Professor (I was a Math major who took a Math Ed class with her) who was in jeopardy of losing her job due to the Director of Education (Ann Gregory I believe) trying to prove that students should take college level algebra and statistics in order to prepare for the math state testing (since some students did not do well, let alone her points were not strong and very emotionally heated). Chancellor Keon got up and left before that debate commenced, and I was shocked. The Director and Assistant Director of Education are shitshows of people, and Keon did not want to sit and listen to either side. It was the Professors who sat and made a decision. I am a bit surprised to hear this, but considering he did not put enough effort and care to the two situations above along with this video, this makes me realize he is a lackluster and insincere kind of guy.

And Keon's mocking words sound a lot like what I and other Asians endured from other kids growing up in the 90s. Difference is, Keon is not a kid, he's the head of a major university. And this 2022, not 1992.

Cultural respect is just a slogan, actions speaks louder than words. Too many times this type of internal attitude is displayed, and a public apology is enough to let people get away. If a porno bookmark is enough to get a college professor resign, the same treatment should be done to Mr.Keon who actively displayed inappropriate public behavior. Take your last paycheck and resign is the way to go, because I don't feel comfortable knowing there are college faculties that have poor self control and inappropriate attitude especially in educational setting.

Why not make of Swahili version, Spanish version, or French version of a gibberish sound he could make? Or simply some sounds an ape could make? As the chancellor of public universities who enjoys public recognition and privilege, this guy should know better. In fact, making such not-quite-so-funny noise in public is a shame on his education, career, and people around him to keep those DEI values they want to keep so dearly these days. Just play this clip to high schools in the area over and over again, and see how the DEI goes in Purdue NW in the coming years with his face on it on the front webpage. Dear Purdue Northwest Representatives, I am would like to have a few minutes of your time and discuss what has circulated over the news the past few days. Purdue is renowned for their engineering and professional literacy documentation. All I can say is I would not like to study at PNW. I will not endorse my colleagues and friends to study at an institution where an individual with the power and authority of a chancellor is able to make remarks that make myself and tens of thousands of students feel like less of a person . How can a school with so much professional exposure to the art of language participate in comments that defy the pillars and foundation of this great academic institution? But what do I know; I'm just a lone student. Students are the future and they will choose to go where they want to learn and excel, preferably an institution where they see a future for themselves and peers; a place they want to learn. I can assure you that many PNW students do not believe in a future at PNW with the current leadership. Regards, A concerned student

@@dwayne2871 Not long in NYC some dummy said a racial comment to polish people in a local newspaper and the polish community said nothing about it not even mention the situation, The guy who did this, was make to look like a fool. I think polish people have high esteem about themselves, they did not showed any attention to that moron. They really know how to deal with racism.
