Purdue chancellor mocks Asian languages at commencement
Purdue University Northwest’s Chancellor Thomas Keon mocked Asian languages at the school’s commencement ceremony on Dec. 10. In his apology, he said, "We are all human. I made a mistake." Read more: wapo.st/3PrQV1o. Subscribe to The Washington Post on KZread: wapo.st/2QOdcqK

Wow, as a 70 yr old Chinese-American born and raised in the US, the last time I heard something like this in real-life was from one of my grade-school classmates! The most disturbing thing is the University’s ready acceptance of Keon’s lame “apology”. especially since it just promoted its Chinese-born Dean of Engineering, Mung Chiang, to be University President-elect, starting Jan 2023. Curious to see if the Asian community at Purdue is able to do Dr. Mung a favor before he takes office by getting rid of Keon.

This guy isn’t sorry. He is sorry that he got caught. If this is how he talks in front of a commencement ceremony one can only imagine how he talks in private. It shows you that all of his “diversity” initiatives at the college are disingenuous. And nothing will happen to him. If he mocked African Americans like this he would be forced to resign the next day and there would be a national conversation. It just goes to show that Asian Americans continue to be treated like foreigners in this country despite doing everything asked of us.

What the ......... What a childish act. almost 5 years old.
I was a former PNW student in the Honors College. I interviewed Thomas Keon to learn more about his thoughts on the Honors College. He gave some thoughts, but they were not really measurable rather vague. Additionally, I also went to a Faculty Senate meeting to support a Math Ed Professor (I was a Math major who took a Math Ed class with her) who was in jeopardy of losing her job due to the Director of Education (Ann Gregory I believe) trying to prove that students should take college level algebra and statistics in order to prepare for the math state testing (since some students did not do well, let alone her points were not strong and very emotionally heated). Chancellor Keon got up and left before that debate commenced, and I was shocked. The Director and Assistant Director of Education are shitshows of people, and Keon did not want to sit and listen to either side. It was the Professors who sat and made a decision. I am a bit surprised to hear this, but considering he did not put enough effort and care to the two situations above along with this video, this makes me realize he is a lackluster and insincere kind of guy.

What in the world does "learning a real language" have to do with making a joke about the guest speaker's own joke about using a personal made-up language? Do you people stop and think for five seconds before you start typing?
Dear Purdue Northwest Representatives, I am would like to have a few minutes of your time and discuss what has circulated over the news the past few days. Purdue is renowned for their engineering and professional literacy documentation. All I can say is I would not like to study at PNW. I will not endorse my colleagues and friends to study at an institution where an individual with the power and authority of a chancellor is able to make remarks that make myself and tens of thousands of students feel like less of a person . How can a school with so much professional exposure to the art of language participate in comments that defy the pillars and foundation of this great academic institution? But what do I know; I'm just a lone student. Students are the future and they will choose to go where they want to learn and excel, preferably an institution where they see a future for themselves and peers; a place they want to learn. I can assure you that many PNW students do not believe in a future at PNW with the current leadership. Regards, A concerned student

You are not just a lone student. We need your help to get people at the school to speak up. They are hoping this will be forgotten after the holidays when people go on break.
He has some sort of deep-seated 'issue' that needs examining. He turned to his colleagues as to get their approval. He needs help in counseling or something as to why he acted as such. Maybe, he makes jokes, etc., about his students whether they are the same color as him or not. And, it finally came out of his mouth in public! Notice the smiles on the colleagues, they have seen this about him. They were not surprised at his remarks!!
People, this is what THEY do in private. THEY can only hide their true feelings for so long. Don’t trust THEM - ever!
If he makes such remarks in public imagine what he says in private.
No one should accuse the chancellor of not having common sense because he only spoke of exactly what thoughts manifested in his mindset. He displayed his comfort level in speaking publicly. His core being would not allow for anything less.
Can you imagine a Chinese headmaster imitating American school kids on LSD?😅😅😅
And a chancellor at what school? Just wow…

I am not Asian and it does not matter if I am or not, when I say that I find this mocking of Asian culture was disgraceful, disrespectful and unprovoked. He says in his apology "We are all human", but his pathetic display makes it seem like he thinks he has more rights to bully, insult and belittle other humans. He is a figurehead of a university, that some people dedicate their lives to getting into to study and then pursue their lives. He must be better than what we see here, not just from his words of apology, but in his ACTIONS
Feel so sorry for asian students sitting there at the ceremony for such joyous occasion after working so hard for so many years of their young lives but instead, have to sit there while the faculty head mock them in such manner is so so sad and deflating I'm sure. Not a single member of that faculties in the background had any decency to take a stand and speak out against the bad behavior of their chancellor. But worst, they laugh along with him.
As an Asian American; who cares. People are too sensitive these days.
In this day an age everybody is like a little child, and show low self esteem and they start crying I was insulted. Nobody can take a joke because everything a racism. Benny Hill did this as many comedians but now we have to confort and accommodated those that have low self esteem and to apologized for every word we mention. We have become so stupid and baby like, it is pathetic.
