Hey, McCann Dog Training, thank you for this invaluable puppy training series! When it comes to using your puppy as an alarm clock at night, how can you tell the difference between them needing to go outside to potty and simply being restless/looking for attention? My family will be bringing home our first ever puppy in a few months, and I’m trying to be as prepared as possible. Thank you! 🙂

Our cobberdog always slept through the whole night from when he picked him up at 8wks, the only thing we conciously did was to remove his bowl before bedtime, getting a good nights sleep made us more patient puppy parents throughout the day

Ken and Kayl, I just wanted to say thank you so much for your videos. I got my goldendoodle puppy named Nash yesterday! He has been such a breeze so far! No potty accidents, only been using potty outside!! Also he’s doing so well in his crate, he actually loves it without reinforcement! I have woke him up a couple of times throughout the night to go outside and I had to get him out because he didn’t want to come out. I’ve been studying up on your videos for the past 8 weeks waiting to get him and I feel like we are going to do great together. Once again, thank you SO much for all you do❤️ love from Kentucky!

Honestly, we’ve had our 9 week old puppy Freddie for a week now and he’s settled so well thanks to your puppy videos! He’s been sleeping so well and barely whimpered, I have to listen for him to move and only have to take him out once a night and that’s cause of me being paranoid he’s going to pee in his crate! He does his business at night straight away and we go straight back to bed, it’s been amazing! Thank you soooo much! X

She is 13 weeks now and went from going every 3 hrs at night to now sleeping 6 1/2 hrs at night. She goes potty out side at 4:30am and goes right back into her crate to sleep for another 2 hours. This video is amazing 🤩. Watched this out of desperation on the 2nd day of bringing a new puppy home. Followed all the tips throughout the day to introduce him to the crate and exercised him before bed. Put the crate on table beside my bed and he did amazing 🤗. Got up once in the night and went to potty (in the rain of course) and he went straight back to the crate. He slept until my alarm went off. A couple of times he did whimper but he settled back down! Thanks so very much for this video. It truly works. 👏👏👏❤️

I’m really enjoying your series, it’s helping me a great deal. Two nights ago she slept nine hours and last night 10 hours. I don’t mind staying awake after her first hurry up because we go to bed at 8 o’clock. I don’t work I’m disabled and live alone. Somethings I can’t do because of that like tire her out in a hallway with 2 ppl. She already knows her name and looks at me in the eye when I call her but I’m having a problem getting her to come when called. How long will the whole thing last? I know we will always have to keep her on the schedule.. So like one year every day two years? 1 1/2? I don’t mind getting up but I need my first coffee before supervising her and playing first thing. She has so much energy she won’t sit still in the crate. I still do supervise, but that’s the hard part. I let play on her own first thing.

Here's a question, we about to get a puppy in 2 weeks, trying to prepare. You're videos have been so helpful! We are in a very dog friendly apartment. We have a dog run, but I'm concerned about taking the puppy there until he gets his vaccinations. Can I potty train on a grass mat on the patio until he is vaccinated? Will that harm potty training effort in the future. I'd love any advice you may have. Thank you!

Kayl, thanks for the help, on all things puppy. We have been working hard with our little 9 wk pup, and I think sleeping is the one thing we struggle the most with. Talk about knowing schedules, this little guy is up around midnight, then around 3 am, and finally about 5:30, 6. I have survived a week plus a few days, and the breeder says to give it two more weeks. If you have any other helpful suggestions, I am all ears. Thanks again.

What my mum has done with our dogs has been limiting access to water and food hours before bedtime and then lots of exercise (playtime) to tire out the puppy and then from what I know she never had to get up during the night. Then first thing in the morning the pup was carried outside (focusing on using 1 door only so that the puppy quickly learns where to go whine to let us know to go out)

My 8 week old puppy sleeps downstairs in his crate. My cat sleeps in my room, there's no way I keep them both in my room right now when they haven't fully adjusted to each other. I only need to wake up once throughout the night to let my puppy out to potty so I think that's pretty good so far. I sleep at 11, wake up at 7 and if I have to take him out between this time, I honestly prefer taking him out at 3am rather than at 5 or 6am. It's harder for me to fall back asleep if I wake up 1-2 hrs before I need to. But I'll be trying to push him to hold for 8hrs within the next week or two

HI Mccann Dog Training, thank you for the video, we have got a 5 month old Pomeranian Puppy, he has been with us for 6 or 7 weeks now, he does not have many accidents inside as we keep taking him out all the time, he goes to bed in his crate at around 8 pm then take him out at 1 am and 6 am, most of nights he does not have accidents in the crate but sometimes he will poop - no pee- at night in between those times, he does not wimp or cry to alert us, he just does his business and carry on sleeping, we have already tried reducing the hours he needs to hold it, changing the time we take him out, etc, but still does not work, he will just poop in the crate without warning, any advice will be much appreciated.

What I do with my Collie puppy, is rather than letting him out after you took the food and water, keep him awake and then when you are ready for bed take him out and wait for him to wee and poop. You don’t say how long it was between the 8pm and bed time but I assuming it’s say 10pm. Those extra 2 hours could make all the difference between wees and poop and could make all the difference of making it through the night. The whining does sound like it’s either just attention crying or separation anxiety to be honest. I have a 5 month old Collie who now sleeps outside his crate, usually upstairs with us and makes it all the way from about 10pm to about 7am without an accident. I struggled at first until I looked at it in a purely scientific way and it finally clicked, that no food or water in the dog after a certain time, dog empties bladder and stomach before I go to bed, nothing else goes in bladder or stomach therefore nothing can come out throughout the night.

Hi there, Lucas! You can start your potty training at 7 weeks. You’ll need to be a little more proactive to avoid accidents. Supervision will be an important part of the process. Here are a few videos that will be helpful: Puppy Potty Training Tips kzread.info/head/PL7BBgLulherkDs-Zi5TTSxcJq8QCHMLRj Happy Training!

I have a question. I am getting my new puppy in 3 weeks and I will be going out of town in the beginning of July and he cannot join. I feel bad for leaving him when fireworks will be going off and I was wondering how can I get him used to the sound of fireworks before I’m gone. Would putting videos on the tv periodically be good?

4th of July is always rough for puppies. I’d try and introduce them to popping sound on KZread maybe? A crackle? YES and reward. Build that positive correlation. Reward to desired behavior

@@nathanielstevens7150 thank you so much! I have also thought about buying a few firecrackers and setting them off outside while we were inside, just so he knows it’s outside and it’s okay. I’m wanting to train through it so he is expecting everything to be fine. Thank you so much!

I would never set off fireworks in my yard with a little puppy! That frightening sound outside might just ruin all of your potty training because he might be too fearful to go out. I would give your puppy a calming chew (a medicinal chew) before I left, and have some music on in the house so that the sounds will be muffled and maybe even the TV at the same time

We have an 8 week old that we've had for 5 days. The first couple of days he only pooped after breakfast and after dinner. Third day he pooped after breakfast, then an hour later in the house, then not again until after dinner. So I started a log of times he peed and pooped so I can see a pattern. In a new environment he may be a little anxious so his schedule may get off. Also, your feeding schedule is probably a little different than the breeder so make sure you give him enough of time to relieve himself after breakfast. Hope this helps.

At what age can you let your pup go potty by themselves? We always go out with him to potty no matter the time of day to ensure he goes, but we're not sure when we will be able to trust him to go out and go on his own. He is almost 6 months and is good in ringing his bell to be let out.

I just picked my 6 wk old puppy up at 11am this morning she threw up within 5 min of starting out also slept all the way home (1.5hrs). When we got home I took her out and walked her a short time (she didn’t like the grass much). No pee or poop. She drank a little water and ate a couple pieces of food. She’s been sleeping all afternoon and not interested in getting up. Is this normal for a dog this age and newly separated from her mother and siblings??

Would you stop calling it “the washroom” - of course that sounds quite polite and I’m sure you’re trying to be conscious with your vernacular, but you’re already saying “poop - pee - potty.” Stop calling it the wash room, “then I let her up and take her outside to use the washroom.” You’re diminishing your professional credentials when you keep calling the grass outside, “the washroom” Same with “the bathroom” Call it potty, call it poop, call it pee, call it go outside. All of these are perfectly polite and appropriate for ANY audience.
