Let me just say, you definitely have a gift for this. You make it interesting, funny, sensible, and enjoyable. I’ve just inherited a puppy. I haven’t had a “puppy” puppy in decades. I’d forgotten how much work can be involved. Found one of your vids and began watching one after the other. Really good stuff. I’m not dreading the training now. Only on day 5, but I’m really getting into it. The way you explain it takes all the “hardness” out of it. Many thanks. Seeing my pup lay down tired makes me want to lay down tired. Thanks again.

I'm actually so pleased to find a video where people are not just going on about how amazing it is to crate train . . .. I'm yet two dogs from a pound in Serbia . . . they've been in cages their whole lives . . . the last thing I want to do is being them home and stick them in a crate ,so it's nice to see other options too

people do need to remember it does take time to train a dog (depending on breed) to comprehend. Repetition is key. Be patient...sometimes it takes months for a dog to grasp what you want him or her to do. Animals are wonderful.

And I'm not 100% sure how it happened but I've now watched at least 20 videos and subscribed!! You are very entertaining to watch and very informative!! You take something that most people dread (people always say "well if you get a dog you know you'll have to train it) and make it seem so simple... I respectfully disagree about the lazy dog owner. Look at how lazy MOST people who follow an every-hour or whatever system. They usually go outside with the dog, stays impatient, and then rushes back in and complain that the dog is going to the bathroom inside! He's actually spending time with his dogs and making sure they exercise! I think that's awesome.

I just a got 2 month old hound pup, first dog I've owned in my life. So of course I've been tearing through KZread trying to figure out how to get this little monster to quit pissing everywhere, use the crate, not whine when I'm not around, etc. Every video suggests unrealistic strategies for a guy who actually works during the day, who can't go through long training sessions every single evening, can't spend time preparing the "overachieving" sort of meals. Glad to come across someone with some real world advice and a couple laughs thrown in. Subscribed!

Stonnie Dennis This is true. One must learn to except that fact. It has to be hard putting your ideas out there for anyone to critique so I wouldn't blame you one bit for being hesitant to do so. Since I've been learning about dog training I've seen there are many factions of peoples thoughts on training methods and they seem to be very hostile towards each others philosophy on the matter. No doubt about it though, you have a gift for explaining the philosophy behind what you are doing in a easy to understand way plus you are a very likable character. Either way I'll keep watching!

Hi Stonnie, Just found your channel last week and am really enjoying you and your videos. I really like the way you treat all the dogs at your kennel. I'm a long time dog owner, animal lover, and all of my dogs have been rescued and adopted from the streets of NY or kill shelters here in NJ, as well as recently some rescue groups. Some of my dogs came already housebroken, just needed alittle refreshing but the 2 I have now are mixed breeds, as most of them were. Whatever needs rescuing/adopting, but have had a beagle. cocker spaniel, border collie and a pomeranian. Glad to see you also work with older mixed breed shelter dogs. 6 mos ago adopted a chihuahua/shihtzuu mix, so Ozzie wouldn't be alone 4 days out of week. Her owner died and she was a mess, had had puppies, had mange, 4 -5 yo and was told she was completely housebroken. So not true! , and my other adopted one, Ozzie, is now 8-9 yo. and had him since he was 4-5 . Since I've not been home because of work ( gone for 8 to 9 hrs) I do have puppy pads down so Ozzi, male terrior mix can go if he needs to and thought that my Jessie's Mae would be ok and use the pads too. I have to admit I have not been a good dog trainer in this area especially and Jessie will go when and wherever she wants. She also jumps and climbs like a cat so she'll get into trouble on dining room table if any food left out but real problem is that she will eliminate anything she has to wherever....the couch, the floors, rugs, even once on the bed!!!!! So I am so glad I just saw your video about house training these older shelter dogs and now am between jobs for a couple of weeks and can't wait to try your technique . ....supervision, with some treats, exercise, kong ( with some liver), into the 1large crate I have. But don't think I will do this with my older guy because he will use the puppy pads conscientiously. Thank you so much for sharing all this important information on dog psychology and what goes on in their minds.....I am learning as well, but I'm not a young puppy either :) Just bought a kong but only have the 1 large crate. They are expensive around here, like $100, but will keep looking. Would like to get one that either of them could use....that goes for sometimes in the car as well.

Supervision, exercise and confinement, in descending order. that logical. I thought that was the case, but you confirmed it. thanks. I picked up Anja, 8 week old Labrador last Saturday. (immunizations are up to date for her age. just in case, I pick up when other dogs come around. will do that until she is inoculated to a safe level) I'm applying your good student environment. I take her for short walks early in the am and evening around local baseball fields.its perfect because there are fences on both side of the decomposed granite pathway. This provides security and a relatively controlled environment for her to follow and experience the outside world. I've been using treats to reward when she is following me. its working, she follows close with her tail wagging straight up in the air. Sometimes when I look back to find her, its as if she disappeared....until I look at my heels and I find her sitting there patiently. Its easy to love on her. For periodic daytime use, I constructed a play pen ( open door crate, and little fence, 10 ft radius pen) for her to rest, eat and feel secure. I put this in the corner of the yard. When we come back from walks or being out, she looks tired, so I place her there. This morning after our walk ( 630am) I put her down on the side yard and she frolicked right into the play area, stopped at her bowl and looked up at me. as if to say, can you feed me? She is adapting. your words of not overloading your dog to heart.... I'm going to implement crate tips. I love the Five Guys joke!

I had watched your video expecting to get a few tips about house training but was unexpectedly entertained. "That would be exactly like if I came to your house and your kid kept running in the closet." HAHAHAHA! You were a joy to watch and are a natural in front of the camera. :) We're bringing a shepherd puppy into our home at the beginning of March. Great tips!

I found your "no dog goes into a field and gets full off peanuts" particularly funny. If my dog figured out how to dig up peanut plants, he definitely would. When I was first training my dog, he used to regularly go into my garden and steal kale leaves off the plants. He liked eating the stems. He still does like them, same with carrots and celery sticks. Whenever I do have whole peanuts out , or peanut butter and apples my dog does request we share. And whenever someone breaks out an orange or citrus fruit he does demand we share a slice with him. That being said I'm sure he'd love some fresh liver pate as well.

I love how the Malinois sits calmly through the whole video, then goes berserk when the meat-filled Kong gets put into the crate. Mals are great that way. They can go 0-100 in a heartbeat and put their all into any task they feel is worth the effort. I've watched a handful of your videos, but this one got me to click the Subscribe button. Awesome content as always. Keep up the great work!

I agree I hate crates. That's why my new tiny 10 week old Chihuahua mix who I rescued from a suspected puppy mill uses his as his personal bathroom 😆. He must have been crated because he took to using it so easy. It's not a carry type. It burns me up to think what this little guy's life was. I bought him gladly to save him. He was so skinny. Lucky Penny is his name and he is adorable. Thank you for the awesome video. Ms Michal 🙃☕💖

THANK YOU SO MUCH! I've always felt this way about crates, never used one with my dog. Now that I'm getting into dogtraining, a lot of trainers had convinced me that crates are a good thing, and that they help the dog feel safe. They made me feel like I was robbing them of their safe space. I understand the need for a dog to retreat to one, but it doesn't have to be a small prison!

Just picked up a couple of Great Pyrenees pups, so Ive been watching loads of training videos. They'll be farm dogs, guarding my herds. As far as information and presentation, Stonnie Dennis's vids are among the best. Ill be using the methods here for some of the basic obedience training, and so on, and get back... I expect (based on the dogs in the background) that his methods are solid. Pretty stoked to have this video backup for the reading im doing.

Stonnie I love your videos they are so dog friendly teaching us how to coexist with our fur babies without having to exert dominance over them. I've got a lab puppy and I'm so exhausted from having him chewing slippers and brushes I tell him firmly no he ignores me and just chews on. I even try to lure him with his chew toy but he keeps chewing the forbidden stuff. He's just under two months old.

You are the best dog training channel on KZread. I just got a Mastador puppy 4 days ago so I started researching the breed and training techniques and found you. You explain things very well and use analogies and metaphors to explain complex issues. Thank you for these videos! My pupper thanks you!

Yasssss!!! As soon as you said what you did about the crate... I decided to subscribe! Finally some common sense!!!! So tired of everyone trying to make themselves and others feel better about "plastic prison". People leaving thiers pups a whole working day in there...it's heartbreaking!!!!
