as far as i understand this school, children don't 'make up the rules' at Summerhill as you state in your film...Summerhill is a self governing community where adults and children have equal votes on all aspects of school / community life....staff and children together co-create the rules and learning environment. George Hollis most of today's sickening conventional schools forces children to learn wether they chose or enjoy or not; this is an alarming phenomenal which is alleged indoctrination of facts and conformity. Indeed very destructive for young minds. I thank your comment about insight to Summerhill's unconventional schooling.

Hi George whilst definitely a bit overdone in rhetoric, the students do indeed make the rules, all rules are suggested, amended and voted on by all. All rules are reviewed by the student bodies often and new laws included should the need arise by the students themselves...at least that is their philosophy and strategy implementation is another question entirely

I’ve always found Summerhill to be a fascinating experiment in Anarchist education. I’m only a high school graduate and I had no interest in going to college. The reason being that I’m self-taught (autodidact) and because Modern schooling in the United States is basically a prison for kids. The learning is controlled and dictated by the state and the rules are enforced like it’s an authoritarian regime. Any room for creativity is non-existent and A classroom is like a four walled cell. We can learn a lot from the people at Summerhill! ❤ 🏴

It's worse than prison - Much more is expected of you. The stress is much greater. You can not get out early for "good behaviour". You're periodically released only to be brought right back in again, which means getting to experience the dread of returning every night & morning and you'll have work during this time at home too from school. There is way more rules to follow, the ones in prison make way more sense, these ones are arbitrary, baseless and condescending and frequently given by someone breaks it all the time themselves without consequence (aka hypocrite). You get yelled at much more by people much bigger and more intimidating than you than the guards in prison. Violence is more frequent in many schools and treated less seriously than in jail, in 69 countries in schools the teachers even partake in it and beat you with weapons themselves, something they aren't allowed to do to prisoners (or anyone else but children). Collective punishments are a thing, meaning you will be punished for what other people do, this is not a thing in prison because we know it's messed up to punish a criminal for something he didn't do but we'll do it to children (and only "them"). Even if you do get a punishment which the powers that be consider "unfair/unjust" you're not due any compensation whatsoever whereas in prison you could end up being paid millions of dollars. In prison you don't have to ask someone else if they're okay with you going to the bathroom or not (like it's any of their goddamn business and as if it's something you have any control over anyway.) You have to be guilty of a crime to go to prison because it's considered unjust to take someone's freedom otherwise (again unless they're young then the consequence for being young is worse than the one for committing a crime). There is due process when doling out punishments in prison, in school they don't have to prove you did anything and it's non-existent so could just be a "guard" punishing you for fun, cause they don't like you, a student framing you, misunderstanding/accident. People don't routinely break into prisons and shoot everyone with machine guns but it happens all the time in schools. One is filled only with innocent people who we say we care about more than any other group and must protect at all cost and the other is frequently filled with hardened, remorseless, vile criminals who want to hurt us. The list goes on and on so I'll stop there but there is plenty of things about prisons which are better. It's no wonder so many school student's commit suicide every year, you can see stats about this, it's covered in "the war on kids" and Dr. Peter Gray publishes data about it on psychology today, the suicides are at pandemic levels in various countries all over the world not just USA. When you constantly force someone near something against their will over and over again until it kills them, you murdered that person, they aren't suicides anymore than someone being forced into slavery and their mental health dwindling from it to the point they kill themselves is. In fact doing a full time job for zero pay is exactly that anyway.

In my opinion, what is shown in media about what is happening with geopolitical is very different from what is actually happening at many cases, anyway. Let's not to be naive about this world leaders and major events.

But he learnt important skills that some people go there whole lives without developing... Geography and History are important, yes, but being a well-developed and emotionally intelligent person is more important.

@@dant5349 i wouldn't say more important, but equally important. And if you don't know the history behind certain topics, it would be much harder to navigate the world and not, for example, fall victim to propaganda etc
