PUP: From 'Natural Failures' to Punk Rock Darlings-the Complete Morbid History | AP

#PUP #morbidstuff #puptheband
Even at their absolute best, PUP are about to fall apart-and that's just the way they like it. Often considered to be the future of punk rock by fans and critics, but more often self-described as "natural failures," PUP have built a career on relentless tour schedules and the mentorship of legendary producer Dave Schiffman. In spite of vocal cord cysts and an incessant fatalist group mentality, PUP have delivered some of their very best work in the form of 2019's "Morbid Stuff." From their Bon Iver inspired folk roots to the frantic modern punk classic, "Free At Last," from quitting day jobs to feeling like their band could end at any moment-this is the oral history of PUP, morbid stuff and all.

this band is one of the few things getting me through high school, morbid stuff is freaking awesome & it released at a time when i really needed something like that. the 2 pup shows ive been to have been two of the best times of my life. idk where this is going, but just know i think its a great band & theyre good people.

I wish I had this band in high school it would have made it a lot easier. I’m sure that is of zero use to you right now, I’m sorry. I’m very fortunate to have Pup/Morbid Stuff at 34 to help me better understand myself. Thanks Pup!

It gets better. As shitty and fucked up that highschool is it is really some art fueling garbage. The things you'll take from that experience is really something.. Cant lie to you and say it'll be a positive thing. High school sucked for me probably as much as it sucks for you. But music is one sure fire way to get through a bad day and I cant tell you any other band than PUP to do that for you! What's your favorite song of theirs?

I think the “unpolished, rough feeling” makes the songs more relatable, as most of us are just trying to hold it together. And listening to music that reflects that sort of exhausted (Bare hands), frustrated (Kids), annoyed (Sibling Rivalry) vibe is realistic & comforting.

I like that that it's not like a lot of Early punk where it can sometimes feel scrapy due to lack of effort. This one feels raw because the sheer energy is hard to contain in a pretty polished format.

I remember the day PUP became my favorite band. I knew Reservoir from WD2, and I wanted to see if they had any other good songs on the way to the beach. I was listening to DVP and Doubts all day, and I never had gotten that feeling from a song before. Then I had been looking forward to Morbid Stuff for months, and when it came out April 14th I was listening to that all day too, Free at Last was especially amazing.
