Punjab gangs & Canada’s Sikh radicals, and how the ‘nexus’ works: Shekhar Gupta with Ananya Bhardwaj

#punjab #canada
Against the backdrop of India-Canada tensions over Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the NIA has been cracking down on Sikh radicals & Punjab’s gangsters, who are also believed to be involved in drug smuggling. In Ep 1318 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta is joined by ThePrint Associate Editor Ananya Bhardwaj - who has kept a watch on Punjab gang activity as part of her reportage - for a discussion on this nexus, its main cast of characters, and how it operates.

One suggestion- Ananya is great and is able to clearly articulate. So Shekhar can try to avoid interruptions while she is trying to put across a point. It will make the conversation more cohesive.

As a resident of Vancouver for 23 years I have seen many gang related violence among panjabi drug gang. More then 100 panjabi youth died in internal gang violence. Shakharji get more insight from Vancouver Sun reporter kim bolan's articles. She is reporting on them for many decades.

Shekhar needs to calm down on the unnecessary context interruptions breaking the flow of Ananya. Good job on her for not losing it. We get it the first time, their names are based on names of villages and that Armenia is having a war with Azerbaijan. Those contexts adds nothing to the conversation.

Shekharji humble request is to let other reporters complete their sentences before you interject it looks rude on your colleagues. Intent is to just communicate what i see. This happens on all your episodes when there is a colleague

Dear Shekharji, if you don't want to let her finish her thoughts then why bother inviting her to share the screen? You could have just done the show citing her for the research she did. I have great respect for you but this was very annoying and embarrassing. I have noticed it several times in recent past but this time could not resist myself typing this comment. FYI I have been following your journalism for a few decades and enjoy your storytelling -- and of course I am not a bot/troll. Thank you.

Shekhar Ji let this young reporter express herself without interrupting. You get whole episodes to do individually without interruptions. Want to hear fresh ideas.

Dear Shekhar ji, this cut the clutter seems to be contradiction to your National Interest article "Sikhs have 99 problems and Khalistan isn't one of them". In your article you tried to put the blame of this fiasco on BJP government saying "The rise of this all-powerful BJP, lack of representation for the Sikhs - especially Punjab’s Sikhs - the isolation of the Akali Dal and what they see as victimisation of the Muslim minority have had a deep influence on the mood in Punjab. You can live in denial if that makes you comfortable, but not for long".

Right step by NIA. Hold money sources of Khalistanis by neck and get the whole nexus demolished that is bringing bad name to Sikhs worldwide specially Punjab

It is irritating to see Shekar Gupta continuously interrupting Ananya. After asking a question to her, I believe letting her speak is best way. He asks the question and speaks over her all the time.

A well-compiled report of crime, drugs, and killings amazing effort by Sekhar and Ananya, is not an easy topic to make such a brilliant 42-minute episode. I'm sure this would have been a painful and extraordinary amount of work to compile such a report with so many names, gangs, and Canadian soil used for making Indian soil for crime, It Beats the Bollywood script many times. Thanks

Another Punjab episode? Between Punjab's "Kanada" craze and the state govt's inability to transform Punjab's economy, there is very little anybody can do to stop the overseas Khalistan lobby. We'll have to live with this "inconvenience" and hope it does not creat disturbances for the whole diaspora or stir trouble back home.

Appreciate your thought (shekhar ji) @theprint on not giving heed to the word khalistan. They dont deserve any publicity, which they are looking for. Having said that, they must be neutralized surely.

Shekharji stops from calling spade a spade but when it comes to crimes from the extreme hindu-right, he is happy to term it Hindutva, shuns it wholeheartedly

Excellent . More reporting like this and less screaming and threats and there's a chance our two countries may be friends again some day.
