Punch-Out!! (NES) Playthrough

Ойындар

A playthrough of Nintendo's 1990 boxing game for the NES, Punch-Out!!
Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!! (kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIKhpbmCktC9crg.html) was huge when it hit the NES in the fall of 1987, and it had staying power. It was still in print and selling well three years after its initial debut, and to meet the demand, Nintendo was preparing another production run for the summer of 1990.
But this time, since Nintendo's contract with Mike Tyson had recently expired, they removed his likeness from the game and shortened the title to Punch-Out!! "The Legendary" Mr. Dream, with his cheesy grin and off-puttingly sallow skin, takes over in Iron Mike's stead. He's not a new fighter, though. His bio may say that he's from Dreamland and that he has a 99-0 record, but he's really just a white (and thus legally distinct, presumably) Mike Tyson. All of their moves, patterns, animations, and dialogue are identical.
I didn't want this video to be a mere rehash of my playthrough of Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out!!, so I decided to challenge myself with a goal that would force me to learn the game better.
I wanted to find out if it was possible to win every fight with a KO. It took a fair bit to learn how to wear the fighters down without TKOing them, and it's much harder playing like this, but I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of how much fun I had figuring out Punch-Out strategies as a kid.
I almost managed a clean sweep, but I couldn't figure out how to KO Great Tiger and Bald Bull in the Major Circuit. Still, I was pretty happy with being able to nail down twelve of the fourteen fights, and I liked how the slower pace allowed me to show many of the between round chats.
"Let's keep it clean! Now come out boxing!"

I think the gameplay still holds up to this day. I can't think any other fighting game that actively punishes you for not deciphering boss patterns and just spamming buttons to win.

Mike Tyson or Mr. Dream is not the thing that comes to mind when I think of Punch Out. Just the sheer fun of dodging and countering at the right time is what I love about this game.

I know most people would prefer to play against Mike just because he's such a legend. But if you live in Europe, the Mike Tyson version actually is a lot better because the Mr Dream version is not properly PAL optimized. Only the music is but the gameplay is too slow, and not only can it lead to problems like dodging too early, but also annoying things like the opponent intros not being in sync with the music. There are also some small sound improvements in the original PAL version that are all gone in the Mr Dream version.

0:40: “(cue ‘Superstar’ by The Carpenters) Back on Christmas Night 1987, a 17-year-old named Little Mac shocked the boxing world by upsetting the undefeated Super Macho Man, ending his 35-0 run and taking the WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World from the Hollywood native. But now, a new challenger has emerged, and his name is the legendary Mr. Dream. With an undefeated record of 99-0, Mr. Dream has racked up win after win after win after win after win after win after win after win after win after win. Tonight, Mr. Dream looks to kick off 1988 in grand fashion as he tries to not only extend his record to 100-0, but to also take the WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World from Little Mac… (cue 1980-84 Showtime jingle) …on Showtime Championship Boxing! We welcome you, LIVE, to The Forum in Inglewood, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, where tonight, Little Mac puts both his 27-0 record and his WVBA Heavyweight Championship of the World on the line in a 12-round battle against the legendary 99-0 #1 ranked contender Mr. Dream. Good evening, everyone. I’m Steve Albert and welcome to the first Showtime Championship Boxing of 1988, and, on behalf of all of us at Showtime, we wish you a happy new year. Just 8 days ago, Little Mac shocked the world by ending Super Macho Man’s 35-0 record and becoming the new WVBA Heavyweight Champion of the World, and wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. Now, tonight, the Bronx native has a new challenger waiting in the wings, and that’s the 99-0 Mr. Dream. As always, I’m joined by the fight doctor Ferdie Pacheco and Bobby Czyz, and, gentlemen, it’s the dream match we thought we would never, ever see.”-Steve Albert.

What I love about this game is that it discourages you from just spamming move after move like in practically any other fighting game at the time. You *_have_* to strategize and learn each boss' patterns so you can determine the most efficient way to defeat them. *_This_* is the version of Punch-Out!! that I'm familiar with... Mostly because I have only ever experienced it through Ultimate NES Remix and on the NES Classic.
