Puma Velocity Nitro 3 Review: Fast Daily Trainer

The Puma Velocity Nitro 3 is the brand's newest daily trainer releasing January 24, 2024. It uses a dual-foam construction with a top layer of supercritical TPU Nitro foam and a bottom layer of standard EVA. Here are my thoughts on the shoe after 100 miles, including a 16 mile aerobic effort, multiple short runs with strides, 40+ miles of treadmill running and a 22 mile treadmill workout with 10 miles at marathon pace and 2 miles at threshold.

    First review of yours I’ve watched and I’m impressed. Thanks for going in detail on the ride characteristics, and comparing to the Boston. As someone who prefers a slightly firmer ride than a lot of max cushion shoes offer this looks like a great option.

    You managed to really bite into that outsole. I've had multiple Puma shoes at 500+ miles and never been close to that wear. The outsole is ridiculously good!

    Sounds like a great shoe and your 100 mile test, using it for all your runs, is a couple of levels up from what most shoe reviewers are doing. Kudos! Question: with your commitment to high mileage this block, what are your strategies to avoid overtraining?

  • @supwell

    @supwell

    thanks galen! my personal rule for high mileage is quantity over quality - so i am very strategic about how and when i do workouts. right now i am only doing 1 workout most weeks, 2 max. for the rest of my runs 80+ miles a week i'm running anywhere between 7:45 and 8:30 per mile - nice and relaxed so i don't stress the body. when i'm not running, the name of the game for me is recovery. constant food, water electrolytes. i make sure i'm getting enough calories (usually 3500+ a day) as i've found that underfueling is my biggest threat. sleep has been mixed recently but i aim for at least 7 and try not to go two nights in a row with less than 6

    I love the DN2 so much that I’m scared to try another Puma shoe! I don’t want to dislike it. I know the DN2 has a plate but I can’t really tell compared to the more aggressive super shoes.

    I think you’ll love having the V3 and the D2 in your rotation! I’ll use the D2 for track workouts abs shirt races and the V3 for long runs with workouts and strides and also easy runs. I also race trail and long distances in it. The V3 updates are amazing. I like the freedom of no rocker and no plates, natural yet cushioned.

    Love your videos man! I am new to running and wanted to have a great first daily trainer. And this is one of the shoes I wanted to buy! What else can you recommend? Looking towards Pegasus 41, Adizero SL 2, and these Velocity Nitro 3. What are else can be a first running shoe?

  • @supwell

    @supwell

    6 ай бұрын

    thank you! and the peg 41 and SL 2 will both likely be great options for a first daily trainer once they come out later this year. the velocity nitro 3 is a bit firmer than i'd recommend for a first daily trainer. another option i'd suggest is the nike vomero 17 - super durable, comfortable and protective while still having a grounded, flexible feel that will help build foot and lower leg strength

    Puma Grip gets so much love that I think people often overlook how good the Nitro foam is. They also do a great job of keeping the weight down, considering the amount of rubber they're putting on these shoes. Come on, Puma; give me a nice rockered shoe now.

Used them for the entire event, held up well during the 2 mile run, overall I improved considerably I only did 2 runs with the shoe. Looking forward to adding more miles in them and possibly adding the Velocity Nitro 3’s to my rotation as my cruiser shoe.

    Is it bouncy?

  • @supwell

    @supwell

    6 ай бұрын

    it's not bouncy like an endorphin speed 3 or triumph or vaporfly. it's more like the boston 12, where once you get going with some pace it responds well to a more forceful footstrike. you have to put some effort into the shoe to get the bounce out of it - whereas a shoe like the speed 3 pops you along no matter the pace

    If not getting injured, you don’t have to change it. Heel striking isn’t bad unless it’s with a straight knee while impacting the ground. Just look at Matt from Doctors of Running, he’s a PT and heavy heel striker, wears out heels in like 50-70miles on a lot of shoes.
