We all know Pokémon; not only is it one of the best-selling franchises in the gaming industry since its debut in 1995, the anime show that soon followed is still running to this day, as well. However, before Pokémon, there was a game developed by the same creators, Game Freak, for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive by the name of Pulseman. It never came out in Europe besides the Virtual Console version on the Nintendo Wii and in the United States it was solely available through the Sega Channel in the mid '90s: Sega's on-demand streaming service for games. The game was most common in Japan as it saw a physical release there, so with all that in mind, did Pulseman simply leave his one and only mark on the world with a solid platforming experience or has he become an obscurity for good reason?

    I remember when Tembo the Badass Elephant was announced so many people were angry at Game Freak for "betraying" Nintendo, while all I could think was "Give us another Pulseman instead!".

    +Retropolis Zone I think Tempo would be a great game to become a review in your channel. It is a very beautiful and unique game, and it's a 32X exclusive. Not the best game in the world, but it is good overall. It's a little gaming oddity worth checking.

    "I'd never listen to Pokemon compositions outside of the game" -- I could understand this if you only played the oldest entries, but I swear from generation 4 onward there is a plethora of truly good music in those games, and so few people seem to even know this (they either don't play Pokemon anymore or don't listen to its music when they do play). I swear I'm not crazy! And speaking of, it's pretty fascinating that one of the most epilectic-insensitive games out there is made by the guys who made Pokemon - of course Game Freak had nothing to do with the anime as far as I know but we all remember the big seizure event from Japan in the late 90s.

    Good review, and this looks like a neat game. Ethan convinced me to download this one on my Wii U, but I've just never got to it. Anyways, you mentioned that this game has elements from Pokemon in it, but didn't really specify what those elements were besides the musical style. Is it just the whole idea of organic beings getting digitized into computer space like the Pokemon PCs?

    Also, the Volteccer is Pikachu's signature move (translated in the English versions of the game as Volt Tackle). Compare Pulseman's version of the move to Pikachu's rendition of it as its final smash in the Smash Bros. series.

    This was an extremely well-done review of a very good game. You're absolutely right about the camera being too close to Pulseman--the game gets king of frustrating toward the end because you just can't see the obstacles that lie ahead! Here's to hoping you get the many more viewers and subscribers you deserve!

    +Notgivingmy nametogoogle Music can play a great role in my enjoyment with the game and I feel, like you, that people tend to overlook its importance. I decided to stick in soundtrack samples because words can't really do music justice, and it sets my reviews apart, I think. :)

    Man this game is so nostalgic! My only problem with it is that it's too short, I never got past the second group of stages as a kid so I was disappointed when I learned that they are followed by the final stage, I feel like there should've been 3 more stages! Also what's with Game Freak and epilepsy?!

    Pulseman should be appearing in the pokemon anime, but instead of artificial intelligence, he is just a regular human under the name Diego Armando, Beatrice is his landlord(who has secret crush on him), and Veil is Steve Jams(who was planning to manipulate Pulseman, and was later by the end of his debut episode and later sworn revenge on Pulseman and became Veil)

    4:34 Since I'm a programmer I may be able to explain this. I think the game is coded in a way where, if you're running up a slope, you lose some speed. Since the platform is moving UP when you were jumping, I think the game mistook that for running up a slope. (Since you're getting vertical velocity while running on the ground) Hope that cleared it up a little for you

    Hey nice review as always, I'm gonna have to get around to this game, I like Pokemon and Classic sidescrollers, and to be honest I'm getting Mega Man Star Force vibes from this somehow, I think it's got something to do with both of them involving Cybernetic superheroes wearing visors and quite literally "Pulsing In" and out of objects. I've played Pulseman a little bit, but it was quite a bit ago on emulator, and at the time I was too young to know about connecting controllers to a PC, so I played on a keyboard and it made the game come across as too difficult in my eyes. I beat Mega Man games with little problems and don't personally consider them difficult but many others do, and I'm no stranger to classics like Sonic, Contra, Metal Slug etc. either, so maybe upon revisiting Pulseman will feel as average in difficulty as you make it seem. One thing I'm curious about, do you ever consider reviewing the Rocket Knight/Sparkster series of games? Those are some of my favorite classics in the 16 bit era, I saw RKA in your Gunstar heroes video, though I do believe you probably just showed it because it was one of the last games the treasure team developed at Konami before they became treasure as we know them now. I don't know if you'd like the follow-ups but I think they'd make for interesting reviews, Sparkster: RKA2 is my personal favorite of the four games in the series despite me personally feeling it is the most flawed.

  • @TurtleTitan03

    @TurtleTitan03

    +Zairrd Vordenta I dunno, I think it's still a fair comparison, both Pulseman and the Star Force series take place in futuristic settings and star electromagnetic super heroes who have the ability to materialize in the physical world, and tend to jump between both said world and the cybernetic worlds within electrical devices in order to fight evil, both Mega Man and Pulse Man are half-human, half-cybernetic lifeform, With Pulse Man having the DNA of a human combined with data of a program called a C-life, Mega Man in Star Force is the EM wave change or combined state of 11 year old boy Geo Stelar, and his EM alien partner Omega-Xis. Again the aesthetic between the two heroes is similar enough between the strong use of primary colors and the whole visor thing, they both are capable of shooting energy projectiles from their arms, and they even pose similarly, Pulseman: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/a/a9/Pulseman_box_art.jpg/220px-Pulseman_box_art.jpg Mega Man (SF):vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/megaman/images/b/bc/Mmsf-wave-road.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20110627140204 I'm not at all suggesting they are the same thing, or related whatsoever, there's just more than a few similar aspects shared between the two, and I get MMSF vibes from Pulseman as a result, or vice-versa if you want. I think the comparison here isn't nearly as shallow as the comparison of ZX to Ben 10 or Vectorman.

    Shaolin Turtle I agree with you. Isn't that enough There are many more similarities Ares Extinction Agenda gives me grown up and futuristic vibe deriveed from Megaman. I see what you mean. But keep in mind despite all those SF is RPG exploration while pulseman is like boss battle and run and gun. Metal Warriors and Cybernators were the predecessors of mecha games. Some fragments of Solartorobo Artstyle just takes me to CM Artstyle. The graphics of Einhander and Sector Strike are almost same Zx is more closely associated with ben 10/ vectorman transformation is hals added. Like only a particular body I changed. I did get the SF vibe. BTW I also always had this thing in my head But the psedoroids designs remind me of Pokemon

    Even without a revival, there's plenty of material to work with if Pulseman was to get representation of any kind. The title character's kit is enough to make for a good Assist Trophy, Ultimate could've easily had some Spirits to the game's name, including a Pikachu favoring Volt Tackle to represent him, and maybe there could even be a stage that can have Dr. Waruyama himself as a Stage Hazard.
