Pulmonary Embolism Story / A Blood Clot in my Lung at 34 Years Old

A few days ago I was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lungs). Lots of people have asked what happened so here's an overview / rundown of what happened last weekend. Going back through editing I realised there are lots of things I didn't mention so if you have any questions then leave them in the comments. This is the behind the scenes KZread channel for the parody cycling videos KOM HUNT TV. Giving you a little insight into the making of, checking in on the growth of the channel, some extended clips and maybe some "Director" Commentaries on some of your favourite episodes. #PulmonaryEmbolism #bloodclot

My story is similar. In October to November, I was going on business trips in which I drove to. It’s a 6 hour drive each way, and only got out to walk once about 4.5 hours into the drive. One day at the hotel, I got out of bed and my left calf was painful. I thought it was a muscle strain from weight training. The calf pain lasted 2 weeks. Once the calf pain subsided, I noticed that I was getting out of breath with an elevated heart rate when walking up stairs and doing certain weight training exercises. This persisted for 5 weeks, and got worse on week 5, where just walking caused severe shortness of breath and an elevated heart rate of 145 BPM. I had been to 5 doctors over this time. All said it was my asthma. Yet my lungs were clear sounding and no medication for asthma helped. I had no chest or back pain at all. I regret not telling them about my calf pain 5 weeks before. Finally my wife took me to the ER, they did a CT scan with contrast of my lungs, and found extensive clots in my lungs. I was in the ICU for 2 days on heparin. I was then transferred out of the ICU for 1 day, was put on Eliquis, then discharged. This was 2 weeks ago. I feel so much better. No more shortness of breath or elevated heart rate. I have a hematologist appointment this week. My father has a genetic blood clotting factor, prothrombin, along with a lupus anticoagulant antibody. He had the same 15 years ago, and was placed on Warfarin then and has been clot free ever since. I have yet to resume weight training. I will once i get medical clearance. Meanwhile, I do walk for 30-45 minutes a day, either outside, weather permitting, or on my treadmill. Occasionally, I do get a little lightheaded, it’s not all day or every day, but it is noticeable. Good luck to you and all who have had this.

Hi Scott. It sounds like it was an agonising and very traumatic experience, and it's great that you're on the mend. I've luckily never had a blood clot but a few years ago had a medical issue/ hospital stay from which I very nearly didn't make it, with excruciating ongoing pain, so I can totally relate to your experience. It was a really nice surprise when you suddenly appeared in the chat on Phill's ride this morning, and thanks for this video to explain the situation. Hope Nat has recovered, she must have been so worried and then having to do those drives on dark/ icy roads. All the best for a continued good recovery, and look forward to more YT content whenever you feel up to it, appreciate how much time and effort you put into it. One more thing (!) - before last weekend you were though still sprinting twice what I can do, even with your blood clot!!

So pleased you explained the experience. Almost a carbon copy of mine. Diagnosed 14.1.22. I described the sharp pain as a boyonet stabbing me in much the same place as yours. I had a week of of coughing up very old brown blood and then a clot 6" long b 2" wide. I don't think it was the only one. No more blood after 3 days of that. Breathing has improved enormously. My left leg is still sore to the touch but deflating slowly. On the same meds as you. I have never had a panic attack before. It frightened me so much. I pushed for oramorph and diazapan to help control the panic attacks. But was given propranolol 40 mg which worked. One respiratory consultant said my vocal chords were closing. Therefore stopping me breathing. He later sent a physio to see me. To help with the panic attacks! I'm 68 and lucky to be still here. My only advice is. Keep pushing to be heard. I had several consultants see me. Only the last one sent me for a pe CT scan.

Jeeh, Scott, what a scary very unpleasant experience, for you in the first place but also for Nat. At those times it is so important to be close to your loved one, isn't it. Now she had to stay outside. So good it ended rather well. And during the waiting and inquieries you had this pain and the breathing problems all the time? I didn't understand this bit. Or did the blood thinners take off some pressure or anything. You know, Sunday, the week before my brother had an aneurysma that was threatening to break so he was had a emergency surgery.. It went well in the end. But hé got the surgery during your weekly stream. I was really very grateful to you the stream got my mind off iit a bit. And a week later you had this yourself Please get better soon. And do not worry too much if you don't manage to get a stream out every weekend. Everyone will understand you don't have a full production team behind you and don't manage to deliver sometimes. Take it easy and take the time to fully recover.Big hug to you and Nat.

Welcome to clot club! Glad you're still with us mate. :D The whole "it's not a clot" thing is familiar. When I had my first DVT it took 4 _months_ for it to be diagnosed. Turned out to be a huge clot in my femoral vein. Done the whole self-injection with Clexane/heparin thing then was on warfarin (an anticoagulant) for 10 years. But warfarin is a PITA with regular blood tests needed so I got changed to rivaroxaban/Xarelto. As I've had at least two clots, I'm on it for life. =)

I just started going through this. 2 clots in the lungs. Didn't have any pain only short of breath. But I'm sedentary and 250 pounds overweight. Tore the ligaments in my knee 14 years ago and then had a leg infection in 2015. Had surgery but still sedentary unable to walk or stand more than a few minutes or walk very far. I just got prescribed xeralto 2x a day and in about 5 days i switch to once a day 4 life. They gave me blood pressure medication the last few weeks. But i stopped taking it today. Wasn't liking the way it was making me feel. Did you get prescribed blood pressure medication. The doctors said my heart was pumping strong. So gonna see how it goes in the next few days. I've never been a pill taker so it's so hard to get used to taking these medications. Maybe it will be easier when I only have to take my xeralto once a day. What time of day do you feel works best for you. Mornings or evenings. Thx for sharing your experience.

Firstly thank you for your detailed description of having a DVT and a PE. We are both lucky survivors. Very lucky. Secondly your description of how you were treated by the NHS on your admission to hospital demonstrates the deplorable state the NHS is in. You were lucky to survive the delays in having a scan. Your symptoms should have raised a big red flag for any of the doctors who you met and you should have received a scan within an hour of arriving at that hospital. But the main thing is you survived the terrible delays caused by the NHS in diagnosing your serious condition. In fact it’s a miracle you survived those delays. Of course I am now on anti coagulants for the rest of my life. You are quite right to state that the body can dissolve existing blood clots using its own defence system BUT not always. Your anti coagulants should keep you safe from having more blood clots but your body may not be able to remove all the blood clots on your lungs. If you find after 6 months that you are breathless my advice is that you to a doctor who knows what he’s doing and arrange for another scan on your lungs. If the clots have not dissolved you may be looking at long term problems including heart problems. There are ways of removing the clots on your lungs. The best way is to have a catheter put in your arm or groin. A tube is passed through your veins/arteries to reach the offending clots and clot busting drugs target the clots and dissolve them immediately. The USA now have a procedure whereby the tube enters your lungs and simply hoovers out the blood clots. I’m not trying to worry you because your blood clots may indeed dissolve naturally. Mine haven’t dissolved and they have seriously restricted my life style. I still get very breathless. I am in the process of having another scan on my lungs and heart. If the clots are still on my lungs I will pursue the catheter tube route. I am much older than you and this means you should be fine but if after six months you find you get out of breath my advice is to have another scan. Best of luck. I hope we both come out of this ok. Being so young means you should be fine. But insist on another scan if problems persist. This condition is responsible for many hundreds of thousands of deaths every year and doctors in the U.K. should know better.

Hi Scott, I had a similar experience around seven years ago now. Was working out reqular at the gym and was really fit, stopped going for a few weeks then BAM a DVT in the leg and multiple blood clotts traveled into the lungs resulting in Pulmonary Embolism. Anyway you know the rest, the excruciating pain and the massive struggle fighting to get another breath. Like myself you are a survivor, just wanted to say take care keep on being mobile, go steady and don't hesitate to call your GP or hospital consultant should you have any concerns or worries at all. Things get easier and better. I am fully recovered now, and I would just like to send out my best wishes to you in your recovery for good health, wellness, and happiness. Be mindful and enjoy the things that you enjoy the most, go steady and take good care. Like many you are a survivor ☺️. Best wishes again. Michael.

Hearing your experience was familiar and different than my past 4 week DVT and pulmonary thrombosis. Biker here too, and an unusual tightness in the calf muscle and behind the knee had me visit a clinic because it just didn’t feel like a muscle ‘pull.’ Fortunately I was sent over to the hospital a minute away and had blood tests and a CT scan, results and doctor’s consultation within a couple hours (I’m in Japan with national health). They wanted me admitted for a 2-week stay right then. It was hard for me to understand this was serious - even though I have a medical background - I didn’t feel bad except the leg and being ill was just something that was very different for me. Not much the hospital could really do except monitor my condition. So, against the doctor’s advice I checked myself out for home care with my wife. Oral blood thinner and pain medication. I couldn’t walk for a week and even laying down with the leg up was painful. It was a gradual recovery and day-by-day. My 3-week follow-up CT Scan showed the blood clots in the lungs completely cleared. The leg is still tight and with some swelling and pain, but showing improvement enough I’m doing short walks and slow bike rides to get my blood moving. They really thought I could die, and one of the reasons (besides the comfort level, positive environment for recovery, aware how to take care of myself) for being at home was that my wife couldn’t visit me in hospital (coronavirus protocol) and wanted to be with me rather than a ‘phone call.’ I’m in my late 60s, good ‘normal’ blood oxygen levels, bpm at rest in the 40-50 range, BP low, and general good health. We are still not sure why this happened; a couple difficult long 10+ hours car drives I had last month, secondary ‘long’ symptom of Coronavirus I had last year, or something else? Genetics Marker test rules that out. It is a mystery.

Sorry to hear this, Peter. How are you feeling now? I've just had a Echocardiogram yesterday so will give a better video update when I hear back. To be honest it was 6-7 months before I got back into some consistent training. I tried to get back to it too soon and struggled quite a bit. I was having these involuntary sharp intakes of breathe with a bit of paiin which was a little worrying. Recently been back to hard efforts on the bike and touch wood all seems ok. I can still feel where the scarring is on the lungs though but can't complain too much. Try and stop the cold air from hitting the lungs as that was quite bad early on.

Bro u are the ideal patient lol....back when i was an intern i had a guy that almost punched me coz i had failed to put an iv cannula in the first attempt lol. I'm glad u got diagnosed in time and u are doing well....PE is dangerous and is notoriously difficult to diagnose especially in this pandemic as the health infrastructure is highly burdened in most countries. U have to wait like 3-4 hours just to get a CT or blood work done and that can be bad in PE.

No stabbing pain anymore just a fucking heavy weight with a knot near the heart/upper left lung. it encourages me to go again to the ER Ps : I'm not a cyclist (more of a bouldering guy 😅) I just hope you got better thanks again for the video

I was 23 years old. I had an emergency C-section and 7 weeks later I started experiencing extreme pain , couldn't breathe , couldn't even lay down. They thought I had pulled a muscle in my chest but after I came back to the hospital a second time , they found it was a PE. I was in Intensive Care for 13 days on IV heparin. Then for 6 months I had to get Coumadin treatments and lovenix injections. It was by far the scariest time of my life. They said they had never seen a patient as young as me with a PE.

Hi there, I was wondering. Did you get severe chest pains (tightening in the upper chest) that interfered with your breathing patterns at any point after you started blood thinners (mine was heparin injections and now pradaxa 150 twice daily) or maybe after you were given a notice of no clots . If yes, how did you or they deal with that. My docs just said it was natural after a PE and gave me stronger pain meds.

In a situation this morning( sat15 april). Went out for a tester ride while starting course of steroids and brown inhaler. Felt off it while riding in Tenerife for 2 weeks. While back did a group 100 miler into yorkshire dales from leeds and back. On front all ride but struggled breathing. Following week(good friday) another group 100. Trying to give it the beans and managed 1/4 ride. Rest of ride was very alarming. I was getting dragged round remainder of ride by caring fellow riders. Very steep hills 9500 ft total climbing proper iron lung action up every slope. On reflection felt baseline exhaustion for months. Doctors appointment 3 days ago consisted of me giving general vague explainations of many thoughts ,body feelings etc. She said any calf swelling or discomfort. I said ive had a slight pull in my calf for about a week but its worn off. She felt my calfs and they looked equal proportion. She waffled on about some technical terms that went over my head. Just given bloods and chest xrays and go back for further discussion with doc and asthma nurse next week. Its just after this mornings cycling atempt ive googled DVT and then youtube brought me to your video. I can still feel some slight tug in calf and being pathetically breathless is cracking me up….your film definitely sheds light on life threatening situation, to not beat oneself up, pause and think sensibly.

I went to ER on May 18th. I was tested positive for Covid and Pneumonia. However, the Dr discharged me without medication the next day to self isolate and rest at home. I thought it was strange as I told the Dr that I was coughing up blood and suffer shortness of breath. He said to monitor my situation and call 911 or come back to ER if my situation is not improving. I continue coughing up blood and suffer shortness of breath for the next 2 weeks. I went back to ER on May 31st. This time the Dr said I had developed Pulmonary Embolism. Now I am on 20mg Rivaroxaban Xeralto blood thinner, once a day for 3 months.

Hey I just survived too. First I had covid on Thanksgiving, then cat scan showed covid pneumonia after quarantine and then the pain came back and everyone was telling me to go see someone. Well I did that's when they found blood clots in both lungs with the right side hurting the most(gasping for breath over the shortest walk). I had a cathador operation awake they put a tube in my leg and then put a smaller tube in that tube from my thigh to the top of my lung and put a filter in. They gave me blood thinner and medicine to help break the clots for 3 days they took the tubes out 4 days later and 2 more days of tests and I was finally walking around without hyperventilating. And now i am on the long recovery from Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in the lung) I cant believe you were riding your bike! And I couldnt eat much either just drinking water and everytime I ran out of water I had to walk 20 feet and I've never breathed so hard for that short of a distance.

My wife got dianosed with stage 4 cancer 6 months ago and we have a 2.5 year old toddler. Football was an outlet for me, and now it seems to be out of the picture. I'm 26 and have multiple PEs right now. They were caught fairly early since my PCP/GP was incredibly attentive to and thorough with my symptoms. It might have been caused by my OCP and/or being immobile due to unemployment/depression but it's hard to say. I have other severe symptoms too that seem unrelated to the PEs.
