Pulling BACK the CURTAIN on Audyssey | Get Better Sound From Your Home Theater

Ғылым және технология

By default, Audyssey attempts to correct frequencies from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. But what if we told Audyssey not to correct above a certain frequency? Could it improve the sound quality in your home theater?

    Run a new full calibration on my 7015...set the new curtain at 400 htz, turned midrange compensation off on all speakers. Updated my personal settings. I havent had time to play with this yet, but my first thoughts are, it doesn't have have a harshness that without the curtain has..its a smooth detailed presentation. Will do comparisons but I like what I hear. I knew nothing about this so thanks @youthman...really appreciated 🙏

    This is pretty cool. Although paying so much money for the Marantz Receiver, I can't help but find it a rip off to then pay EXTRA money for an app on my phone to further fine tune sound settings. Definitely not something we had to worry about with our pre-WIFI receivers.

    I've had Audyssey on/off enough times to buy a new house. A friend of mine is a professional in the A/V business. He told me many years ago that you can measure and calibrate anything to certain software/hardware specs - but in the end you have to satisfy your ears, and that's what matters most. I have the Denon 3700H and on the remote there are 4 buttons for sound mode. One of them is Pure mode and that is what I now use for watching tv. Regardless of any software approaches they are all designed to imitate a natural product - how the brain perceives and 'decodes' sound. And that sound is analog; and all the software/hardware tricks trying to 'digitize' that will never succeed. Calibration software makes a lot of grand assumptions and measurements (while technically correct) could be spot on. The justification phrase being, "It measures well." However, how does that sound to one's ears? One last point is that movie sound is always relative to the sound design and engineer who mixed it - hence the voluminous complaints of garbled center channel dialog - when in fact it has nothing to do with the speaker, but in how the center channel was originally mixed. I usually have my center channel increased to +3.0.

    Great tip! Sounds much better for 2 channel music on my AV7706. Doesn't sound like my system is confined to a box. However, it doesn't sound as good as the IOATAVX AVX17 that I'm about to send back. I finally bought the app and boy am I glad I did. Every time I calibrated my system the subs were always coming out very low or the final result was -12 on both subs. I would keep trying until I got a calibration that wasn't makes out on the lowest setting. My PSA's we're not coming out right until I used this app. Every time I have used it the final setting came out to -7.5 and it sounded amazing even at a flat level. I bumped it 2db and it is absolutely amazing now. I don't understand why the calibration is right when I use the app but not just using the Denon setup procedure. I put up a 500Hz curtain and WOW. My Paradigm setup sounds amazing! Thanks for the tip.

    Good video however I would caution those with heavily treated listening/ theater rooms (such as mine) . In my room all walls and ceiling are 2 layers of 5/8” acoustic drywall with heavy “Safe and Sound “ insulation behind drywall. The acoustics are not optimal at all although the room is extremely quiet and relatively “sound proof”. I also put up acoustic panels on all walls and a few ceiling treatments to handle reflections. Using room correction on the upper frequencies is now a must to bring the life, detail and air back to the high end. Without it things are dull and rolled off. Experiment is my suggestion :) Thanks for your videos....always enjoyable to watch.

    @Youthman, funny that my Marantz SR5013 and my ELAC UB52's & ELAC S10.2 sub are a little shrill/harsh with Audyssey EQ'ing the higher frequencies and the midrange compensation lifted (off), so I've had to use this curtain to dial back higher frequencies that sound a little over-processed to me. I know of what you speak about Klipsch speakers w/horn tweeters, as I've owned a pair of floorstanders. They're a little bright. Thanks for sharing, bud. All the best.

    One of the features from the new 2020 lineup of receivers is the ability to make multiple measurements and switch between preset, kinda like memory 1, memory 2. Like having a music preset and a movies preset. Having the ability to make multiple measurements in the app, duplicate them, make changes before you upload back to the receiver is more flexibility than what the new receivers offer.

    Audyssey is by no means infallible. In fact, don't assume all is well after running the Audyssey calibration. It is a good starting point but after running the setup get an SPL meter to fine tune the audio. What Audyssey really gets wrong is subwoofer measurements. I recently ran Audyssey again and Audyssey measured my 2 SVS PB1000 at -7.5 and -6.0. My SPL meter measured them at +2.0 and +3.5 dB ref level 70dB. Audyssey measured my 4 SVS Elevation surrounds at -2.0, -1.5, -2.5 -2.5. I like to run my surrounds a little 'hot' so I set the surround SPL levels at +6 with the surrounds now at +1.5, +1.5, +0.5, +1.5dB. The ultimate criteria for me is not what is measured technically but how does the system sound to me. I am a happy camper with my setup. I'm sure a sound engineer would do measurements out the wazoo and tell me my system is not 'optimized' but I could care less. One other Audyssey setting I change is the MultiEqXT32 from Reference level to Flat. I have also found that while Dolby Atmos has its virtues it is also not infallible. Many times I've preferred Dolby TrueHD over Atmos. One last thing is that, while enjoy Youthman's videos, he incorrectly states that the SPL meter should be set as A -Fast for speakers and C-Slow for subs. However, A weighting measures noise (OHSA standard) not volume level. C-Slow for subs is correct. Another 'controversy' is how to place the SPL mic. I place it vertically considering that the Audyssey mic is vertical. Just some thoughts and observations.

    Great video! It helped me understand some more advanced features. However I have a bit of an edgy situation. I'm using a 5-ch MM7055 Marantz to bi-amp my fronts, and I'd like them to preserve a good amount of bass, because I really want to enjoy stereo music (audiophile, here!) as much as possible, while keeping a decent 5.1.2 setup for movies. So far I've been out of luck to achieve that. I can obviously not afford a separate front pair with a stereo amp - my AVR is a Marantz SR5012 - so please.... Do you have any tips for me? I don't want to use the sub for music, so I'm more into a true 2-ch setup, than a 2.1 setup. Also, could you explain a bit about midrange compensation, for all channels? Thanks!!

It seems when uploading the defaults, it overwrites the new 500Hz curtain change you just uploaded to the AVR. Am I correct? Great video Michael. My system has an RSL CG23-CG250CG23 front array, CG3s as surrounds, SVS Prime Elevations as F/R Heights and an SVS SB-3000 sub. I finally started playing around with the editor this week but the curtain, unfortunately, had a negative effect at various frequency settings. I did turn off mid-range compensation on both the "curtained" and default configurations and loaded each into my Denon's presets. A-B comparisons resulted in "muddy" sounding voices on the curtained setup and much crisper voices on the default configuration. Maybe the limiter was overcompensating but this was the case at all of the frequency settings that I tried. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, if you're doing an audyssey calibration run from the app and some extraneous noise occurs at one microphone position, how do you go back and repeat that one? Do you have to wait for it to finish that position and then hit cancel? When this happens with an Audyssey run on the AVR, you can just cancel at any time and it will redo that position. Thanks

    I have preferred cutting of audyssey at 300hz, I find that works better in my room. I wish there was a way to apply this cut before running audyssey, that way whatever amount of parametric eq options used by audyssey can be maximized within the band you really need it applied. I've also taken mine one step further and taken the curtain for the sub all the way down to 20hz. I measured the response of my subs before and after running audyssey and found I had a flatter response with audyssey off on the sub channel. Then I just used the minidsp 2x4hd to further flatten and I'm in audio heaven.

  • @martheunen

    @martheunen

    This! REW measurements and then REW EQ to minidsp worked great for me. Audyssey did not improve subs at all. So turn down audyssey eq on subs all the way if you have other means of eq'ing your sub(s). Also, change the crossover to between 80hz ~ 120hz and change distance setting for subs in AVR as well as sub level and remeasure for smooth transition from sub(s) to mains.

    Hey Michael just a question , so I re ran audyssey in the app made a few adjustments and also I made the curtain all the way down for the subs to 20hz so then my mini dsp does all the work because if I run Audyssey after I have done my mini dsp settings the Audyssey try’s to make a flat response when I already have done this in the mini dsp so then it ruins the frequency range in my subs output from after to dsp. Don’t know if that makes sense but I have re ran Rew after audyssey and it ruins my curve I had already from just my mini dsp.

    Start with a bass line of 80hz for your cross over. You asked about dB levels. No one can answer that for you. It's your space. Just calibrate your system with whatever software calibration tool it came with. And leave it at that. And if you know what you're doing then you can get you an spl meter and go back into menu after calibration and set all speakers levels so they are the same which is usually 75db

    You can always adjust your levels and distances manually. There’s different schools of thoughts on the distances. Some people say let odyssey determine the distance is because it’s not actually looking for exact distance but instead it’s trying to use that to set delays. That you had to do a little bit more research on to see which side of the school of thought you fall on but yes you can absolutely manually make all of your adjustments if you want
