Yea I had that happen to me spring of 2018. I was pissed cause it was only three years old. I didn’t know what it was. Thank goodness for KZread. All it was, was stuck piston from old fuel over winter. Anyway I was so happy I fixed it , I started fixing lawnmowers when I found them on the curb. It was always something I kinda wanted to do. I learned everything I know by watching KZread videos. Thanks for more info!

Bought a chainsaw,spares or repair. Pull rope wouldn't move. Took spark plug out, covered in lot of fuel/oil residue. Removed muffler to check piston etc. Piston ring was glued too. Poured some white spirit into exhaust port & plug hole. Left to soften a few hours then engine turned over. There was still a thick coating on piston head & upper cylinder. Mixed 25 ml of white spirit in 5 litres of petrol. Used to make up 2 stroke mix @ 40:1 . After running a few tanks of this fuel mix, checked piston through exhaust port. The residue had dissipated. The metal was shiny & piston ring groove clean. No visible damage in engine, just some tarry gunk in bottom of muffler. Spark arrestor screen clean. Still running well. Hope this helps someone salvage an abused tool. People's thoughts would be appreciated. TIA

I'm opening up my weedeater today. I am not mechanical but I have managed to fix some mowers using youtube. This will be my first try with a weedeater.

Great job! I had the same issue with a Shindaiwa hedge trimmer I was able to loosen the seized piston using a 50/50 mixture of kerosene and two cycle oil and letting it soak for 24hrs...enjoy your videos...keep up the good work.

Great diagnosis and repair. Never had one stuck, but the crank case full of fuel making it a pain to start. Curb find Echos here are damn near impossible to find, only one in ten years. FB sellers want crazy money for ones that don’t run.

Worked for me. Thanks a million brother. It was my dad's x-series weed eater. I think there was some built up pressure from the WD-40 being in there with the spark plug in. But as I pulled the string a few times the pressure began to release more and more with every stroke till it started.

Good job, I've never had that happen, I only use the good stuff, Aspen 2 in all my two stroke equipment so I don't have to worry about leaving the tank full over winter and I find it burns cleaner. I used to mix my own fuel and had to empty everything for any long storage like over winter but when I changed to Aspen 2 I don't have to worry about that and I also found that it cleans the engine too, my HS 45 Stihl hedge cutters had tons of carbon deposits on top of the piston, 3-4 tank fulls of Aspen 2 and it's gone and looks like new and runs way better

Or use fuel stablizer. I have never had any issues starting my equipment after storing for the winter, or longer. At the end of each season I change oil, filters, etc., then run the machine til it stalls out, a couple of times, then I will empty the last few drops of fuel from the tank, leaving the cap loose or off to let everything evaporate, and will dump any residual fuel from the carb, and blow out the jets. Next season I check the oil, gas and go. Been doing this for decades. Never had an issue starting even very old equipment. But good job getting the trimmer going. May have been a good idea to check the air filter before starting. Eliminates another possible issue, and much easier getting it back on when the engine is not running. 👍

Yes, I had a customer bring me a small Chanpion generator that was full of very sticky stuff, Don't know what they used for oil but it was awful. Maybe they put cheap 2 cycle oil in a 4 stroke engine. Thanks for the video.

Before storage, the manual for the Echo GT225 recommends: Observe the piston location through the spark plug hole. Pull the recoil handle slowly until the piston reaches the top of its travel and leave it there. Reinstall the spark plug but not the ignition lead". This might be a little extreme, but I've read many suggestions in manuals to rotate the engine until you can feel that you're solidly into the compression stroke, to close the valves and seal the combustion volume. Perhaps this would have helped here. Since I have an identical model, I'll pay a little more attention this autumn!

On a 4-stroke, like on a generator it's good to store them at TDC. That way both valves are closed. I have a 2.6K Onan that I have to store like that. An intake valve was stuck when I got it and the TDC has kept it ready to go since then.

Nice trimmer it looks almost new. Good Job on getting running without any parts.

No I haven't had an engine jam up on me due to storage but I think someone has used too.much 2 stroke oil in the fuel at one stage in the line trimmer in the video because I think that's what's caused the cylinder to varnish up. I was told not running a 2 stroke engine at full revs can cause that because all of the oil doesn't get burned off so it just sits in the combustion chamber then varnishes up the cylinder, piston & rings !

I cut the grass yesterday. The first two rounds were fine. After some time the machine stopped and I tried to pull the string to start but it stuck. Not sure what caused this but the motor was hot when I touch it. I have a different model but I will try to check following your video. Thanks for the clear & precise explanation! Great video!

@@HomeGaragechannel I followed your instruction but I didn't have a carburetor cleaner at the time. So I just sprayed oil inside that chamber and I tried turning the motor by hand. It's smooth. It worked! I used it but then it got stuck again after some time. (That was before I saw your comment here) I will try next time regarding your comment. Thanks so much!!!

I hate how people think as soon as they buy higher priced equipment and then treat it like crap from day one because they think it’s more expensive so it can handle more abuse than the cheaper stuff and then just throw around the trimmer all over the place I just hate how people do that. And I think you should treat the more expensive stuff with more care than the cheaper stuff. Just needed to get that out

Had a similar problem with both of my trimmers and both were kept inside. Could not rotate the engine with the plug in but rotated without the pug. So shot some carb cleaner and engine oil into the cyl and finally got it to rotate with plug installed. First time I ever experienced that symptom as I use these machines quit often. Also use a gas additive to prevent varnish. Thanks for the video but wished I had seen it first before attacking the problem. Not sure there are valves in these 2 cycle engines or reeds.

I don't like leaving fuel in anything with carburetors so I usually run them out of fuel I just don't want it sitting in the carb and messing it up. my first thought was a stuck piston , I'm glad it was an easy fix for you ... I also wonder how many people throw out their equipment due to something like this 🤔

The storage was a problem but all the carbon on the sparkplug seems to me that the owner never runs it hard enough to burn it off . my neighbor was using his 2 stroke barely above idle and i told him its a 2 stroke and you have to rev it up more or you will have problems and now he gives it a workout .

This looks like the results of improper fuel mix or crappy 2 stroke oil... echo red armor is the best air cooled 2stroke oil out.. I run it in all my machines. Trimmers , chainsaws, snowblower you name it! There is totally a difference between liquid cooled 2stroke oil, marine 2stroke oil and air-cooled 2stroke oil. This info was given to me by my local power equipment shop, awesome guys that take pride in helping provide customers longevity with their equipment, rather than constantly getting it fixed 🙂

I notice my Craftsman WS 405 has its pull rope stuck too, and I guess it has something to do with the way I store the unit (hanging against the wall vertically, with the engine down). I guess this position may lead the engine oil to move and precipitate on the "back" and allow to dry and stuck parts within the engine. this vid allowed me to understand that the problem is NOT the Pull Rope, but actually the engine being stuck. ( I eventually saw the Craftsman WS 405 manual that says to store in a HORIZONTAL position). If this is your case, just place the unit on horizontal position (or tip slightly lower than engine), wait for 15-30 minutes, then try to start it = usually it will be FIXED!!!

Yes it has; yesterday! The Echo 230 blower was locked up after sitting inside all it's life. It has NEVER been outside and never hardly in my drafty shed but in her side which is a storage building. I was going to blow leaves with it and noticing the choke was closed, started to pull it and it wouldn't budge. I knew it couldn't be broken so I kept increasing the pull on the recoil and directly it made a slow half turn . I eased it around for several pulls and then choked it and got serious after it got a shot of gas and freed up a lot. It popped on the 3rd pull and ran the next pull. I set it down and let it idle and after a minute I heard the tone change and I went to blowing leaves. It smoked a bit but cleaned out and did fine for the rest of the job here at home. It acts a dab lean on acceleration but I'm going to run it like that and see if more runtime will help richen it up. If not I'll look in the archives and find the low screw and give it a quarter. And I think it was stopped last with the choke and that's where the oily sticky stuff came from. Thanks and Blessings!

I have a landscape company and I’ve never seen this happen. I’ve cleaned the spark arrestors when I noticed a change in performance or choking, learn something new everyday I guess.

The spark plug was completely carbon fouled. 2-strokes are not made to idle, they are made to run wide open throttle as much as possible once warmed up.

You are correct about that. After running it for awhile the carbon was pretty much burned off and it ran great.

I need help. I have a echo srm 225. The primer bulb only works if the return line is literally submerged in the fuel. Should it be like that? Cause if im not mistaken the return line comes originally as a short line.

You are absolutely it shouldn't have to be submerged in the fuel for it to work. I would replace the carb.

Are you sure some hoses are not mixed up? On a 2 stroke Echo and most modern 2 stroke OPE engines it is a purge bulb not a primer. All it does is remove air in the fuel line between the tank and the carb. No fuel is pumped into the engine when a purge bulb is pressed.

Yep left mine out in the rain like an idiot. Hopefully this fixes mine.

Someone needs to use a different 2 stroke oil, it not doing its job fully. Storage protection is also part of a OPE oil job. Does the oil used on that trimmer say Biodegradable on the front of the container?

This is why the manuals tell you to put five drops of fresh oil into the engine and pull it over several times before storing it. Another way to do it is to use premixed engineered fuel in your machine and run it for 15 minutes before putting it away.

no because the feul evapourates leaving the oil behind causing it to stick can also stick the diaphrams to gether making it unusable sometimes having to clean out the carb and replacing the diaphrams this one was lucky

Reason this happened was motor put away standing up on the engine with the string end up in the air. the motor was being used full throttle then switched off while keeping the trigger pulled, thus the engine got flooded with fuel.... then being left for a long period the fuel goes stale and the gasoline evaporates leaving this sticky gum residue that when it drys is real tough stuff ( if going to leave any motor for more than 5 weeks empty the tank and run motor dry of fuel or this can happen ).... if this happens to you dont do what he done, get some egr cleaner or get some engine carbon remover.. this little motor seems ok but the rings will not be perfectly free and will need a treatment of either Mercury power tune in a can or Yamaha ring free, it will then get in behind the ring and free the gum and varnish off it plus clean out any Varnish or carbon in the cylinder the head and the exhaust...... WD40 is terrible for stuff like this as its way too dry after a very short period.. you need proper anti gum/carbon stuff because this gummy varnish dont just dissapear, it need to get burnt out the motor.....do not use seafoam as that is rubbish and mainly water and can cause this stuff to be even worse and then need a full engine tear down..........

What do you do if you pull the rope and it gets stuck outside the weed eater and it won’t go inside

depends on the weedeater brand but you'll have to remove the recoil, and see if the the spring is broken, or if the string simply got bound up on the pulley.

Are usually put fogging oil on mine

After doing this to fix the recoil, I cannot for the life of me get the trimmer to start whatsoever. I went down the rabbit hole, replaced the spark plug, air filter, fuel filter, and cleaned the carburetor. Still won't start. I'm truly at a loss now. Should I perhaps leave it for a day or so to dry out the carb cleaner and WD-40?

no WD -40, instead remove the spark plug, leave the trimmer in the sun for few hours, then replace the plug, and on start up, DO NOT use the choke, instead squeeze the trigger, and pull it several times. see what happens.

Well it wasn't locked up but I had a weed eater trimmer that was stored for a few months with 87 octane ethanol in it and the stuff turn to something equal to Play-Doh that was mixed with toothpaste.. after a can of carburetor cleaner for the gas tank and the carburetor itself, I was able to save it but the only casualty was the fuel lines had to be replaced with new because the ethanol packed into those skinny tubes just wasn't going to come out LOL that's why the manufacturer says not the use that stuff or it'll void the warranty🥴 I never store any of my power equipment with fuel in them anymore and I don't use anything but non-ethanol gas after that experience!

wow that's an amazing amount of damage to that trimmer. Glad you could save it.
