Idk where u guys are coming from or why you hate this video so much... but I did my best to get it free. I tried for a while to remove the hook and it was impossible. Their teeth are strong enough to break coral, which means it could have bit my finger off. I was going out looking for a bracelet so I didn't plan on needing any tools. I guess I could have landed the fish and then gone and gotten a tool, but who knows how long it would take me (i live 15 mins from this beach) or if the fish would survive it. Since you all are fish rescue experts, I look forward to seeing all of your videos rescuing fish

When the title includes "(Animal Rescue)", I guess people would expect a happier ending, clearly nothing more you could've done; they should blame the person who was fishing it in the first place.

Amazing that the puffer didnt puff up. Thats its natural defense. Its pretty obvious at this point that animals are mostly sentient creatures That can make their own decisions and deserve more respect than we give them. There are more "human-like" animals then there are good humans. Appreciate what yall do stay safe!

It's not really 'standard' practice. I usually carry a blunt knife when I dive, but not always. In some places one is not allowed to carry a knife. Similarly, there are places where wearing gloves while diving is outlawed. Most of these regulations are for protection of the reefs.

Quit patting yourself on the back. That wasn’t a rescue, you didn’t get the hook out, he is still in pain n can’t eat like he should. You didn’t save him you just extended his suffering n he will slowly starve to death. If you couldn’t get the hook removed you should have gotten ahold of someone who was not afraid n could have gotten the hook out or captured the fish in a large container of water then transported it to someone who could have helped it.

  • @leaveonlywake

The fish will be fine - the hook will most likely work its way out, just like when we humans get a splinter or thorn in our skin. The same thing that will happen with that urchin spine stuck in the skin above its eye. If nothing else, the hook will corrode away eventually. AFA 'starving to death', Puffer fish are omnivores and the hook location at the corner of its mouth does not appear to be in a place which would interfere with eating. Fish also have less nerve endings in their mouth than humans, so it is probably not in pain like you think it would be. In short - being hooked with that short bit of line left, is not what is going to kill this fish, or probably even make it suffer. It should be fine now. That said, the fish would have died *for sure* if still attached to the line and weights. Getting that mess away and off of it gave it a fighting chance, and it will most likely be fine and live out its natural life after this with nothing other than a great story to tell other puffers...

@@barbaragreene6592 It is true. The fishes own body will reject the hook. That looked like a thick hook intended for possibly halibut so it wont rust away in time. However I am confident the hook will be rejected by its own tissue growing out. This happens quite frequently with sport fishing. Many times when protected species such as black sea bass get the hook in a difficult area to remove fisherman often just snip the line, return the fish to its home and let the hook get rejected. In some cases trying to remove the hook wherever it got snagged on the fish could result in catastrophic injury for the fish such as being lodged in the or near the gills where there is tremendous blood flow.

So glad you saved the puffer fish as it would have been bashed against the coral. It looked like it was trying to stay of the coral, with no rest! I have seen seals rescued from hooks by cutting the hook at the bend and push the pointy end forward and out of the body. Looks painful, though once the hook is out of the body, healing can begin.

He was worried about the puffer getting "stressed out" by taking him up where he could actually get the hook out? Does he not think it was already stressed out being stuck, and that it won't be constantly stressed with a hook in it's mouth and fishing line stringing behind it to get caught on something else? It was a good deed, of course, but poorly executed.

It would have required two tools. Needle nose pliers and anything else like a stick for instance to apply counter pressure force to the force of extraction since the fish is still under water. I suppose he should have asked one of the boys to get the help of a resident and get at least the pliers. He made the decision to release the fish expecting natural rejection of the hook. This is highly probable. So the fish is probably fine. Ocean fish are highly resilient.

trying to continue to try and remove the hook would most likely increase injury to the fish and/or injury to the diver. The best thing in this situation was to cut/untie the line. Most likely the fish will get the hook out by itself.

Have you never swam in the ocean before? I'm just below 6 foot, as a teen, I once got dragged underwater by an undercurrent in water just over a foot deep, the pressure difference had me trapped and unable to move properly, when I finally managed to resurface 15 seconds later, I was well over a hundred feet away from where I was, still just 1-foot deep water. Water is dangerous, the ocean even moreso, and swimming in any kind of waves is completely exhausting, even with training and proper gear. Spending too much time focussing on that fish would actually be dangerous, due to potentially becoming exhausted, and let's not forget the fact that he was sticking his fingers into its mouth, pufferfish have beak life teeth and strong jaws that are capable of biting your finger off. He's not being a drama queen, he was legitimately in a somewhat dangerous situation, his comment was completely within reason and it actually wouldn't be surprising if he was underplaying how bad it actually was.
