There is a similar structure in Manila built the Spaniards.
According to historic records United States attacked old San Juan on May 12th 1898 for four hours but was not able to enter its troops so it suddenly retired from the area. Due to that event,there was a change of military plans by United States regarding Puerto Rico. On July 25th 1898 United States decided to invade Puerto Rico by entering the town of Guanica on the southern part of Puerto Rico. After eight hours of battle United States troops succeeded in controlling the island from the Spaniards. On August 12th 1898 an cease of fire (Amnistice) was signed and a few months later in December of 1898 Puerto Rico,Guam,Cuba and the Phillipines were officially acquired by United States from Spain. Cuba and Phillipines gained their independence in 1902 and 1946 respectively while Puerto Rico and Guam are still United States territories.
