    Lin and Alex have worked together for more than a decade. For In the Heights and Hamilton fans, he's just as much a star as Lin, so it was more of a "hey, look who I brought with me!" than a simple credit. Edit: He's also the one playing the piano in the 2009 White House clip John showed earlier

Huge debts and the financial market basically unchallenged. The differences is only the mainland still have enough assets to waste away for now, and they actually have the power to directly confront this but lack willingness to do so.

    I went to Puerto Rico for a day like 2 years ago... its an absolutely beautiful island. This was like 6 months after that hurricane.. there was still power out, small structures in ruin, and some large debris at the beach. The Uber guy was asking where all the mainlanders were. Puerto Rico has had so much hardship and I didn’t know how bad the government mishandled PRs wealth on top of it. I hope more tourists, immigrants and visitors come back. And we should be prepared to help them as much as we can, we have no problem sending billions to other countries, not our own territory.

    To be clear, that "key board player" is 3 Tony Award Winning orchestrator/arranger/musical director/conductor Alex Lacamoire, whom Lin has collaborated with since his first(and only other) Broadway show In The Heights(along with co orchestrator Bill Sherman) in 2008. This is the guy who provided the multi-sound patches and string arrangements that won him the Tony Award for Hamilton and Dear Evan Hansen, and (during the time of this episode) was the First Keyboard/Conductor during the premiere and first few months of Hamilton on Broadway! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Lacamoire Furthermore, he was also the pianist who played for Lin's performance of the early drafts of Hamilton(consisting of "Alexander Hamilton" and "Hurricane") at the White House in 2009!

    Watching that commercial made to entice businessmen to move to P.R hurt... I’m Puerto Rican and when I lived there, I didn’t feel safe. The power and water are always going out, even when there’s seemingly no reason, and during New Years, you have to duck and stay indoors cause you sometimes can’t tell the gunshots apart from the fireworks. And the school system usually doesn’t include English unless the school is private, despite us being a U.S territory. The island is not ok, especially not after Hurricane Maria. Also, I absolutely hate the fact that many Americans don’t actually know that Puerto Ricans are also Americans. I’ve had people ask me if I have two citizenships: One for P.R and one for the U.S. How can our Island expect help when most mainland-Americans aren’t even aware of us being part of the U.S?

But due to rich lobbyists paying politicians for their vote, attempts to do anything about the legislative issues has failed! Now I don't know if it's Dems or Reps or both who are guilty here, but it shouldn't be hard to condemn them no matter what side of the political spectrum you fall on!

We've fought in every single war since WWI under the Stars and Stripes. We've contributed to American modern culture. We are everywhere in the states. We are your teachers, lawyers, doctors, judges, lawmakers, mayors... I want Congress to recognize that we, Puerto Ricans have the right to decide whether we want to be a state of the Union or not. Personally I favor statehood, but I know some other people favor independence, or free association (Ex. Palau, Micronesia). I know that we don't have a good economy, but many, MANY of us are professionals and we want to contribute as much as we can.

    It's sad that John Oliver cares more about the pain and lives of us citizens than most of the mainstream media. I know he isn't a journalist, but journalists could learn something from him and start covering important stories that don't get enough attention

  • @lunayen

    @lunayen

    Juliet Deane There are a multitude of journalists who cover a lot of stories that aren't considered mainstream. However, we as people are bombarded with so much information on a daily basis it's getting hard to keep up. I'm sure that if you Googled "Puerto Rico crisis" you'll get a ton of results. Plus, there are plenty of people who file the island's problems under the "not my problem" category in their drawers. You think that they'll care enough to read up on anything written by journalists?

  • @maryanneslater9675

    @maryanneslater9675

    You are both right. There are other journalists who can do an in-depth story but they don't have the audience and platform that John does, and many don't have his story-telling knack. He can make things easy to understand without dumbing it down too far to please the producers. Which is a huge problem with so many American shows. When I watch American shows on history and science, I think, holy fuck, do the producers believe that their viewers lose their memory every time they get up during a commercial to pee or get a snack? They stretch 15 minutes of information into 45 minutes with overly dramatic music. John crams a two-week course into 20 minutes with jokes and a song!

    You want to know something interesting about the whole round-ice-cube thing? It's not actually entirely pretentious, there actually _is_ a scientific advantage to them. Say you take a sphere of a one-inch radius, the volume calculates to about 4.2 cubic inches. A cube of the same volume would be about 1.6 inches on a side. (There's some slight rounding variance here, I'm just doing quickie math.) However, the surface area is the key. The cube would have a surface area of 15.36 square inches; the sphere would have a surface area of 12.57 square inches. By exposing less surface area of the frozen ice to the liquid drink, the ice melts slower, resulting in your drink not being watered down as fast. ...Of course, it can still be _presented_ pretentiously, but it's at least a mathematically sound concept.

    When I was younger, I was really fascinated by Puerto Rico. It was the first U.S. territory that I learned about. I thought it was a kind of cool/strange way of doing things. I still enjoy learning about Puerto Rico a decade or so later. It astounds me that people forget or dont know they're American citizens. It bothers me that they're not included when government officials talk about how something will help American citizens.

They are however exempt form paying the federal personal income tax, but I’d say that that’s fine sense they also don’t have any representation in the United States congress and don’t have an electoral vote..

  • @VodShod

    @VodShod

    I do believe there are more places for instance if a US citizen is in new york and they get 3 misdemeanor like manspreading in an empty train at 1 am, thus taking up too many seats, then they are then considered a felon and cannot vote. Since felons are not allowed to have their voices heard. A good way of making sure your party stays in power is to find ways of making laws that turn people who vote for the other party into felons, for instance making it a felony to have in your possession an addictive substance that the majority of people using said substance are likely to vote for the opposing party. Like Marijuana and the Black population.
