There is something to this performance (the whole Bohème) that I find absolutely thrilling. Maybe because everything is so unpretentious: it is just a bunch of outstanding singers in a classic, unpretentious staging.

My then-girlfriend and I got tix to a performance in this series. This was 1977, before the big Zeffirelli production. Fantastic Scotto and Pav. A few days later, a performance (which you see here) was telecast, I think the first Met telecast. We almost fell down laughing during the intermission when Scotto said, “hopefully President Jimmy Carter likes classical music and will give more money.” Sorry to burst anyone’s bubble, but Scotto and Pav really disliked each other. She took him to the cleaners in her autobiography.

It is so sad to see how much respect singers received merely 30 years ago, compared to the brief applause between acts today. Let alone to speak of the finale curtain calls, who are also degraded to the bare minimum in opera houses today.

I'm not going to make the point of the difference of singers today and then, which I think is pretty obvious though many people don't agree (or perhaps pretend they don't). But in Germany, especially in selected Wagnerian performances, you can still find energetic applause.

Well, Pava was Italian after all. It makes sense. God I suddenly miss him like crazy. I have always respected abd admired him but yesterday I bingwatches his best arias and god I fell in love. I wish I could see him in after life. Call me corny, but I don't care at all. 😅 The world lost so much when he passed away...

I was thinked she was Mirella Frenni.....not Scotto..... :( they looks as twins or something....

yeah :/ this is such a beautiful piece (and I'm studying opera myself) but I can only see Jenny when I hear this piece :(
