we are taking CLT next week and PSAT in October just to get familiar with testing and I will probably sign up for SAT for the spring 2023, I have a 10th grader so it is a good time to start taking the exams so she can be ready for the 11th grade when it will actually be importent to score high...

In 10 years. Probably. Our state let’s them take one SAT for free. Not planning on college. Probably trade school. We will see. I’m not having them in debt for a pice of paper. All my dropout friends have a very successful carrier debt free. I still owe Form over 20 years ago and make minimum wage with my Degree because I’m over qualified for work my field 🙄. Between work experience & a degree.

We homeschooled our children from K - 12 and I was amazed how we could actually allow them to pursue their individual interests using the vast sea of quality curriculum. We were confident that our children would do well on their SAT and ACT tests but like so many homeschool parents couldn’t help but beam with pride as they all scored in the top 90 to 95 percentile in all subjects. I remember my biggest concern was how they would adapt to the college environment, but once again all three of our children not only did well but excelled and quickly became class leaders, leading study groups, providing free tutoring to classmates, and receiving top honors upon graduation. They are all now successful professionals in their prospective fields. Homeschooling worked for us!

My kids started off in private school and did not get the help they should of and we paid A LOT for that education. They are thriving being homeschooled ❤

It's actually sad that some people think that you as a parent cannot teach your kids as well as an educated teacher but the love and dedication towards your kids will trump all of that... you will get extra tutors and help from outside if needed but we are also very lucky to have such good curriculums that can actually teach kids to learn independently and figure some things out for themselves because there is no rush.

My kids are nowhere close to taking an SAT or ACT but this knowledge is very helpful for me to make an informed decision on whether to homeschool or go private because of my schedules.

We as homeschool moms can provide curriculum that aligns with each child's learning style. It doesn't have to be a one-size-fits-all curriculum.

Yes I totally agree with you 100% There’s one in one teaching and you can actually help them whenever they need it. Plus there’s no distraction. It’s impossible for the public teachers to slow down for one student even if they don’t get the concept.

Home school has a stronger curriculum than public schools in most cases. Public school curriculums are weak when you put them up against something like abeka.

Everything you said plus parental involvement and students knowing their parents have expectations. Kids in public school with involved parents usually do better than their peers, so it seems like a good connection to make with homeschooling. That’s the highest level of parental involvement.

This is a true story, the biggest problem we faced was keeping our children from “reading ahead” or doing a whole weeks worth of math on Monday, doing next week’s science on Saturday. Finding curriculum that challenged then. Books books books, they loved books, for her 15th birthday our daughter asked for and received college level student medical books, I never thought I would be at the university book store buying books for a 15 year old.

Back in my day 🦖 😂 The school gave us a practice test of old test questions. School had a study group you had to pay a few hundred. Our school we learned how to take a test and all we did was practice how to pass the NY Regional & SAT. I got a regular HS diploma (you can’t do that anymore). I didn’t take most of the classes that you needed to know for the SAT. So yea. I still got in college! HS probably do better because less stress. Our teachers stressed us out over testing. “You will become nothing. You will be flipping burgers of you are lucky. This test is everything! This test determined your life.” Umm 99% of us are going to SUNY or Community and they don’t go by SAT. They didn’t want low scores because they would loose their jobs. HS we are like “do the best you can. Ok lets go over it again.” That was over 20 years ago.

I love that you highlighted this just because I was wondering about it even though we're nowhere close to that time yet lol!! I agree with u about the over sized classroom stress & that's just 1 of the many reasons we decided to home school ❤️ There's too much politics involved now & it's all about money so the only ones who suffer are our kiddos! I want to approach these tests with as much info as possible cuz obviously I want my kids to score well. However, I don't place much value on these tests as I don't feel the score has much weight in what colleges look at. I, myself, didn't score high on these tests and still got a full ride scholarship to ASU plus a cash scholarship that paid for my books (I didn't even apply to ASU but I accepted cuz I'd be an idiot not to). I wonder if there's a way to look at our scores from 20 years ago 🤣 cuz I don't remember my actual score. My scholarship was based off my GPA, school club associations & charity work like hosting Relay For Life and participating in Habitat for Humanity. All I know is we're so much happier home school in these current times. Thank you for having your channel! ❤️

I went to two different private schools growing up. Although private schools are good, I believe that they aren't as good as homeschooling. I think the reason the private schools *look* like they score better are these: 1) they have selective enrollment. If you struggle academically, there's a good chance you won't be admitted. 2) they teach to the test. 3) many homeschoolers choose to homeschool because their child struggles in traditional schools, due to a learning disability or other problem. These homeschooled children may score more poorly on standardized tests. 4) if a homeschool student is very advanced, he or she will probably skip these tests entirely. After all, these are college *admission* tests. If a student is doing third year college material at the end of high school, these tests aren't needed.

I would guess that public school SAT scores are down because most kids just sign up without studying for it. This test is just stupid, it’s not really measuring IQ but mostly how much you prep for it and studies showed that the best proxy for projecting how well a kid will do is their parents income. No wonder that private schools are on top. Good for homeschoolers that they get decent results. Although I don’t think it’s reflective of homeschool performance because the problematic homeschool parents would probably not sign their kids up either because they don’t believe in college, don’t care or are from a religious group that discourages higher education in general like JW.

Plenty of homeschooling families continue on into higher education. The benefits of homeschooling is making sure a child/student really has mastered something before pushing forward. In public schools kids are just pushed on year after year even if they are struggling with topics.

  • @lisal5718

@@tracysweatt5401 Yes, of course. I never said that homeschooling is bad in general. But I am concerned that it is a loophole for some parents who wish to teach their children in insufficient ways because of their own religious (like only doing Bible and English)or political belief systems. Or especially in states with no regulations for neglectful or even abusive parents who seek to hide their wrongdoings and isolate their children. Which is always a violation of the child’s right to an education. When done right there are definitely good outcomes and keeping in mind that SAT scores mostly mirror parental income/ wealth it’s not surprising that homeschoolers do well. You need a certain level of wealth to be able to reduce your hours or be a stay at home parent to teach your kid yourself. You are also interested in your kids education and more likely to organise prepping for the SAT.

I was sent to public school while being extensively abused at home. Going to public school doesn’t stop abuse. In fact, children have been abused by school officials that were trusted to protect them. There is no perfect solution but learning to tolerate other parents choices would be a step in the right direction. If a parent wants to abuse their children, they don’t need to homeschool to do that. Schools fail to prepare children for college as well. Money is helpful but ultimately it’s how much time the parents devote to being in close relationship with their children that determines their success. Abraham Lincoln came from a poor family with less than a year of formal education and just a Bible in the home, spent most days with his family working on the farm, I’d say he turned out alright. And grades/tests are just arbitrary ways of determining success.

No nail or hair salons, Eating out for special occasions only, no expensive vacations, no expensive designer wardrobes, no expensive new cars. These are just to name a few ways we budget in order for us to be able to live on one income. Giving our kids a quality education in a safe and productive environment is our top priority.

You wouldn't be taking a test according to your curriculum. You have your child take whatever test the college you're looking at accepts. Most colleges accept the SAT and ACT. Those two are the standard.

I went to private school. They score better because they are not afraid to push kids to reach their potential. We got homework every day and covered every subject everyday day. Parents could do the same if they weren't trying to make things so super easy for their kids.

I think you need to define what home school is? Is it a parent teaching the child, or putting the child on a computer with a tutor online teaching them? You say average kids, typically the average parent cannot and does not have all the knowledge of all subjects . Also what about the childs social skills, not being around other kids on how to socialize with others. God knows that both Public and Private schools have issues. These days it takes 2 parents working just to make ends meat if lucky and pay the bills.
