Public Health As An Urban Solution | Leana Wen | TEDxBaltimore

How public health is the lens to address poverty, violence, discrimination, and injustice. Redefining the role of public health to be the 21st century urban solution and critical social justice tool, in Baltimore and around the world. Recorded at TEDxBaltimore January 2016.
As the Commissioner of Health in Baltimore, Dr. Wen has been reimagining the role of public health. She has engaged public health in violence prevention and launched an opioid overdose prevention program that is training every resident to save lives.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Because she is making the audience aware and they don't want to be held accountable, they will just go home and get on with their own little lives afterwards - thats human nature - this is the problem with the world. We need more people with her fire and determination.

    I'm graduating with a degree in public health in Dec. 2017, and Ms. Wen is such a compassionate voice of sanity and hope, that I hope to emulate and further her work in our communities. Working together as members of community team is what makes public health truly work for its community. Thank you Leana Wen for your inspirational words!

  • @CraigDeLarge

    @CraigDeLarge

    5 жыл бұрын

    Diana Puma Depressing elements have been realization of 1) a short term decline in some health areas where the remedy is not so difficult, 2) human resistance to good health habits, 3) the relationship between wealth and good healthcare access, 4) the conduct of healthcare as a profit-making comoditized industry, at least in the US. The study is simultaneously depressing and inspiring.

    we need more people like dr wen to become lawmakers in the government ( run for and win office ) to enact new laws that help society. We lose a good doctor but for some good laws its worth it.But you have to WIN office and wear out a few shoes. I believe that you have the intestinal fortitude to wear out many shoes and WIN office. I can hardly wait for this to happen !

    Oh Snap ! This is so Important in communities with food deserts, no major hospitals (just a public clinic for maybe lower income individuals and families), a higher crime rate (a "police beat" story on the 10 O'clock nightly news), people that don't live in secure and "safe" gated communities (that could be "redlined" have security/"ratchet" metal beams on both windows and doors), people that live in circumstances that are beyond their control (due to multiple factors/variables, like: a persons gender, a person's racial and/or ethnic background, age demographics (young or old), the hereditary/genealogy factor (somebody had either one or many pre-existing conditions), and various social economic statuses).
