PTS Ep. 20 - A Comparison of Maglite Flashlights

Chris takes us through his collection of Maglite flashlights. He looks at 2- cell and 3- cell models, a LED conversion for one of the 3- cell units, and a 3rd generation LED model. The video concludes with an outdoor night time comparison between the four flashlights.
The newest model number in this set is ML300L and you can read about it here: goo.gl/0ySD6Y

Nice review. Are you going to include a Maglite with Xenon bulbs to LED conversion for D series?

Thanks for the great review. Do you think the 3rd gen would hold a charge for along time if I left it in my glove box for extended periods of say a month? I had heard there is some battery draw, even though small, with memory or perhaps the electronic switch- not really sure how that works.

+Frank Crawford I have one mounted to the side of my rack in my van that's always at the ready. I've had it there for several months now and it always seems to be just as bright everytime I use it. Thanks for the comment.

I keep a 3D Incandescent in my vehicle. It's been in there for a couple years now and I brought it inside to inspect the batteries and seals. Nothing wrong with the batteries, cleaned the threads and lubed up all the seals. I live in NY. Our weather can be pretty brutal, but my light has done well in the vehicle. 🙂

Have you tried using rechargable NiMH batteries in the newest model? I use my older maglites a lot so I bought 2 D cell rechargable batteries from Radio Shack. Now maglite says you shouldn't use rechargable batteries in their 3rd gen lights, but I don't know why not.

I haven't tried NiMH batteries yet for a few reasons, which may be the same reasons that Maglite doesn't recommend them: 1. Alkaline batteries have a higher voltage (1.5V) than NiHM (1.2V). 2. Alkaline batteries are better suited for low drain devices and will also hold a charge in storage for a longer period of time. 3. The initial cost of NiMH batteries and a charger can be cost prohibitive. 4. The newer LEDs are more energy efficient and have adjustable power outputs which translate to better battery life. 5. Li-Ion battery packs would be the better investment as they are higher voltage and higher capacity than NiMH or even Alkaline. If there isn't a pack available for this flashlight, they at least have a model that is already set up to be rechargeable, which brings be to; 6. There's no way of recharging the batteries without removing them which means you have to open and close the cap many times (possibly more than changning Alkalines) and maybe that stress can weaken the o-rings quicker?

+Herbert Ainsworth the difference in brightness and beam throw alone makes it worth it.

5:40 Was it a 2xAA led mini mag that you had the problem with? I absolutely hate those lights. At least the 97 or 98 lumens multi mode model. They actually turned me against maglite a little. My first one lasted about 2 years. After it became unreliable, I bought another. It was dead right out of the box. Wouldn't work. I took it back and got another. After about a year and a half, it started acting up also. They both acted up in the same way. If you kept it level or pointed upwards while on, it would be ok. But if you tilted it downwards, it would get very dim. You'd have to smack it to get it to come back up to bright. I stretched the spring and even took the led module itself out and made sure the tab that touches the positive end of the battery was good. Workes ok then for a little bit, then it would go right back to doing it again. I bought the single mode 272 lumen and now the 332 lumen one. Haven't used them much to test their reliability, but the multi mode one's suck. I love the D sized lights, the Solitaire LED, XL50 and the old style xenon mini mags, but I despise the multi mode mini mags

I had one also that was utter garbage. I also had an led solitare that was broke new out of the package. The reflector lens is press fitted a long with the lens into the head bezel. Mine was broke and the reflector just fell out. Maglite used to be great, but their quality has dropped.

I have an 3 D cell MagLite which must be made around 2016 and one NIB with make year 2017. Both state 168 lumen and are LED but with the old reflector style still. So the donut shows when adjusted bad. These lights with the incandescent reflector type are only usable with spotlight since floodlight is garbage. Nevertheless it brightens up enough at the surroundings. These I use only with Eneloop adapters for AA NiMH rechargeable batteries. That works with these models. With the 2 D models with multi mode switches this battery system doesnt work that well but it works with reduced brightness. These multi mode switches are garbage. Thats why I stick to the simple mechanical on/off switch. The lower Volts of NiMH batteries work for many MagLites but have to be tested. An Maglite with Led but rather a bit older did not work at all with this NiMH system. On that it says still patent pending so I guess it was the 1 st gen Led 3 D cell lights which came out. It depends of the bulb voltafe range I believe.
