    some song off cry baby were based on her real life experiences however others (like this song) she didn’t actually experience, it’s more from a writing perspective and speaking out on a global issue of abuse. it also ties in to the character cry baby’s life. Melanie loves to write music about societal problems that many others are afraid to talk about or does not get enough media coverage love your reaction btw

    I guess her relationship with her both parents is kinda not good but it's more so worst on father side, I definitely can picking that up with how she choose to make songs in English hence her background (I also might be projecting since I love how her empathy goes and I can relate as a POC who doesn't speak well either of their parents language despite being mixed) it actually shows thorought these songs how she talks about so many patriarchy in different facets, and she actually addresses that in After School EP too. Maybe there's exaggeration in some narrative of the stories (songs) but it gave the perspective how these wounds really can cut her deep despite these stories might not true too some extent. She try to portrayed it into a character so it'll give some closure of her healing of her past wound that we the audience might not fully know about but hopefully we got the essence what it's going on.

    She didn't go through these events, Crybaby is a purely fictional character that Melanie created. Syrup is the alcohol Weights in pockets to the doctors is about trying to hide being underweight from doctors. the favorite candy is cotton, which is oxycotin and drugs that rot teeth. Her being an angel is the death of Crybaby's innocence.

    The cotton candy line is a reference to OxyContin addiction, “your favorite candies cotton that’s why all your teeth are rotten” a slang term for oxy is cotton plus continued use can ruin your teeth, or it can also be interpreted as a reference to an eating disorder. A lot of people with eating disorders will eat cotton balls to satiate their hunger without having any calorie intake & obv eating disorders destroy your teeth as well. Very clever wordplay from Melanie.

  • @liilaa.
    @liilaa.16 күн бұрын

    I think the line „your favourite candy’s cotton“ refers to the cotton ball diet going around in pro ana spaces in the 90s and 2000s, where you were supposed to dip cotton balls in orange juice and eat them in order to feel full and lose weight, which actually lead to people dying because their intestines got constipated from the cotton balls because they’re of course indigestible

    Rest assured, she did say that what happened with Crybaby isn't exactly a reflection of her own life, especially her family. She said that while Crybaby's family is less than ideal, her family is rather supportive and loving. The only problem that she have had with her family was in regards of her sexuality bcs her family was more on the traditional side, so even the idea of bisexuality was foreign and 'bad' back in that era, but other than that, she said that her family was pretty good. As the years go by, her family also is chill with her sexuality most likely bcs of how it's not so demonized nowadays. Obviously these are said in interviews, and on her social media so we only know so much. But Crybaby is somehow an outlet of life in general, probably cause she's also very empathetic and understands a lot even if she didn't go through it herself, or for things she knew others will relate to like mental health issues. It's just that her storytelling can be jarring, but it works so well to hammer home the message, like how in Sippy Cup; ignorance doesn't always get rid of the problem, and how people would rather pretend something isn't happening by covering it up.

    Love your reactions and your thoughts. Cry baby is based on Melanie's experience with bullying and dysfunctional relationship with people and parents has she was growing up. Her nick name was actually crybaby has a child. Crybaby album is about how adult situations are seen through a child's eye, she grew up in a traditional Latin household . She was made to feel ashamed to talk about her sexuality and would not accepted because she is bisexual, but they fully accepther now. So yes some of the album is based on her upbringing, and her great talent and imagination did the rest.

    A couple of years back a 14 year old told me about Melanie Martinez. I liked the beats, I did not pay attention to the words. Looking for inspiration early one morning to go for a walk, I remembered the beats and put her on my headphones. It was the first time I listened to the words. At first I thought, oh gee, should I have been playing that for a 14 year old? Then, I remembered she gave me the name. I listened to K12 ... The Principal really got my attention. Then I switched to Cry baby... I was an instructor of anthropology and I automatically apply on the personal level, the home level, community, national global, levels... Expanding the metaphors in application, examining the inspirations for her words/messages. Sippy Cup and kids are still depressed when you dress them up; for me brings to mind, a commentary on the psychologies in our nation we leave unexamined by using American Exceptionalism to keep us comfortable... The charade of outer appearances, like a nation calling itself great, as it funds the military industrial complex, deny universal education and health care. But, we have ever luxury known to humankind. On personal leveI, how do I keep up a charade, to mislead people. Anyway, look back at history, even back to the inquisition, to understand the conditions she talks about in her songs. One person's pain, is caused by a millennia of causality in establishing value dynamics passed down within families, communities and nations. Always morphing changing and fluctuating, but determining tradition and acceptable behavior. I see that home as a result of economic inequality, cause divisions and high anxiety in everyone, until you move high enough in the hierarchy. I became a dedicated listener, cause not only is she relevant, she got this old guy to shake a tail feather, while cooking and cleaning ... I liked your response it was thoughtful... Thanks... Oh, I have seen interviews where she talks about her art in created with the idea of healing, but that she had a fine childhood, she mostly uses stuff in our world... Then filters through her character... Thanks dgain

    So this is Crybaby's story, not Melanie's. She created a character and while she personally relates to SOME songs in one way or another, she did not go through this, Melanie actually has a really great family that's super supportive of her and her music. Also, some things I think that went over your head a bit; her mom is drinking and taking pills trying to get over the affair she knows her husband is having. Eventually it becomes too much and even that doesn't numb her enough. The "your favorite candy's cotton, that's why all your teeth are rotten" isn't actually talking about cotton candy, it's a reference to her mom's drug addiction (cotton is slang for a certain drug that I won't mention here). Her mom didn't have an eating disorder, she had a drug problem and was losing weight because of that. The "syrup is still syrup in a sippy cup" line is more referencing the end of the video when her mom gives her drugs and/or alcohol to help Crybaby cope with what she's just seen/make her go to bed.

    Hello again 1. If you go further in order, then part of the history of her family ends on this song and the part of the album begins, which touches on the personal life of the character (I myself divide the album into 3 semantic parts: 1 - an introduction to family situation and the environment of the character, 2 - personal life, 3 - the formation of personality, acceptance and consequences of failures in personal life and the consequences of the influence of the environment) 2. This knife will be on the screen more than once 3. The actress who played the mother of crybaby, her stylist. (if wrong, correct me) 4. It's a funny observation that the problems in the crybaby album have more of a line of relationships with the immediate environment, and the problems of the K-12 album, on the contrary, show the problem of the relationship between the individual and society (And when does a person first begin to fully interact with society? in kindergarten and school). sorry if i make any factual or grammatical errors, english is not my native language so i use a translator.

    Hello again, Tom! So, I do like to think Cry Baby has a timeline of its own, just like K-12, that's why I suggested you to continue from Alphabet Boy Pacify Her Pity Party Tag You're it/Milk and Cookies (Same MV) Soup/Training Wheels (Same MV) Then: Carousel Mrs. Potato Head Mad Hatter I think this is the best chronological order for you to follow, you'll understand when you watch, that one video completes the next, especially after Pity Party. Tbh, I don't really know where carousel fits in this, I think it would have been better if watched after doll house and separated from the cry baby timeline, anyway! I'm very excited to watch your next reactions! 😊❤

    Really what I see is also the mother’s mental trauma. The problem with the external image might have to do with the mother being insecure because as we know the father has been cheating for while. So that might have made the mother insecure and as we know she’s been drinking because of it,

    Sorry, this may be quite long, so brace yourself, but I want to address some things here that were mentioned. 1.) Going in order or out of order: Firstly, I understand why you think or feel that you've been going out of order. You began with song 1 album 3, then the 2nd album in order, then the first two songs in order for album 1, the 2nd song in album 3, and finally this video showing the 3rd song in album 1. I can understand why you would think this is out of order. However, I disagree that it's as out of order as you are thinking. "Crybaby" is the birth and early childhood of the Cryababy character. Melanie created a book and music videos for this album and stated that she would've made it a movie, but she didn't have the budget or experience for it at that time. Thereby, watching the music videos together in order is actually like watching a full movie. "K-12" is the school and life of the Crybaby character. Melanie was excited to produce her first actual movie, but couldn't budget for individual music videos, so her music videos for "K-12" are just clips from the movie itself. She felt no need for a book since she was able to make the movie. Finally, "Portals" is the death, afterlife, and reincarnation as a fairy for the Crybaby character. As you can see in her production, now she has plenty of funds to take her music and visuals further. It is not known yet whether she will make a music video for every song on her album or just her favorites, but she certainly plans to make a few music videos, and her "Portals" movie will be released next year. It is also known that any "Portals" music videos she makes are not scenes taken from the movie like they were with "K-12." Understanding this information can help with understanding my opinions on why you haven't gone as out of order as you think. Since her "Portals" music videos aren't from her "Portals" movie like she had done with "K-12," you watched all of "K-12" in order, and the music videos in order from "Crybaby" were originally meant to be displayed as a movie, then this is how I view what happened: You saw a sneak peek into Melanie's 3rd movie in a series by watching the "Death" music video. It intrigued you to know more about Melanie, so you wanted to start at the beginning or a point that you thought was okay to begin at, so you mistakenly watched the second movie instead of the first. Once you learned of your error and after you finished watching the second movie, you decided to watch the first movie but didn't finish it before you got another sneak peek at Melanie's 3rd movie by watching the music video of "Void." Then you finally resumed watching the first movie, picking up where you left off at "Sippy Cup." I hope this makes sense, but this is how I see it (although it sounds like you watched "Mrs. Potato Head"? In which case, that would be out of order, but I haven't seen your reaction video to that one. I'll check again, but from what I can tell as of right now, the order and scenario above seem to be more accurate). So, while you are not going in order for story plot (movies/albums out of order), you are going in order by songs per album (you've been listening to the albums in order from beginning to end per song). My suggestion, based on all this information, is to continue in order, in which case, the next song is "Carousel." However, in the end, it is up to you if you want to continue in order or not. 2.) Melanie's childhood and purpose for content: Melanie had three main reasons for making her songs and music visuals: a.) Some songs were meant to express personal emotions and situations while others were meant to express things that occurred to her friends (with their permission, of course). b.) Other songs were simply created to support other people in the world who may have suffered from such traumas; simply meant to heal other people. Some of these topics were specific and others would be political, but all those songs that did not pertain to Melanie were meant to help people with trauma or pain of some sort. c.) All of Melanie's songs that are in her main albums are meant to tell the Crybaby character's story. With all this information, you can see that yes, some songs do directly pertain to Melanie or her friends, but many of the songs are simply for society, political views, and to help people with trauma but are not directly about Melanie. All the songs on those three albums pertain to the fictional Crybaby character as well, but Crybaby IS fictional. Yes, Crybaby shares much in common with Melanie, but she is not actually Melanie; just a fictional character that Melanie created to express herself and help others. All that said, Melanie has lived a good family life and did not experience most of those traumas. She did experience bullying and she does have some mental disorders including depression and anxiety (as an autistic myself, I suspect she may also be neurodivergent, but she hasn't said anything about that, just that she has other disabilities). However, she has never been kidnapped and her family life was good. She explains that songs about poor family life were more about certain friends she had. Sippy Cup does not directly pertain to Melanie, rest assured. 3.) Lastly, there are many people who think that Melanie didn't experience any of her music simply because Crybaby is fictional and Melanie had a good family life. People forget that good family life doesn't always mean good childhood and yes, Melanie faced bullying and has mental disorders. For people to act like her works mean nothing or are bad because she didn't experience all of them, they are quite mistaken and don't understand why Melanie makes her music in the first place. For this reason, I'd like to share a list of songs by category that pertained to Melanie herself, her friends, or were just meant to help people who've been through such traumas. Songs that pertained to Melanie's friends: DOLLHOUSE, possibly Pacify Her (it is unknown whether this was a personal experience, a friend's experience, or just a general experience that Melanie wanted to portray), Mrs. Potato Head, Mad Hatter, possibly Class Fight (Melanie did say she had gotten into fights before, but the scenario of this particular song is unknown if it occurred for herself, her friends, or in general), Strawberry Shortcake, Orange Juice, possibly High School Sweethearts (not stated whether this was personal experiences, friend's experience, or just general experience), Recess, and Death Songs that pertained to no one in particular, but were political, societal, or traumatic issues that Malanie addressed: Sippy Cup, Tag You're It, Milk and Cookies (more like a fictional desire to stand up for oneself), possibly Pacify Her (unknown), possibly Class Fight (unknown), The Principal, Teacher's Pet, possibly High School Sweethearts (unknown), Spider Web, and Womb Songs of Melanie's personal experiences and emotions: Crybaby, Carousel, Alphabet Boy, Soap, Training Wheels, Pity Party, possibly Pacify Her (unknown), Mrs. Potato Head, Mad Hatter, Wheels On The Bus, possibly Class Fight (unknown), Show and Tell, Nurse's Office, Drama Club, Strawberry Shortcake, Lunchbox Friends, Detention, possibly High School Sweethearts (unknown), Recess, Void, Tunnel Vision, Faire Soriee (kind of; she had an experience of feeling like she was in a fairy-like state of mind; many presume she was on mushrooms while others say she's just very spiritual, and others say she is spiritual but was on shrooms when making the song), Light Shower, Leeches, Battle of the Larynx, The Contortionist, Moon Cycle, Nymphology, and Evil. I know you are not saying anything about Melanie in a negative way, but many people I've heard say that Melanie is narcissistic because "Portals" is an album all about herself, but they disregard the facts that "Portals" is a continuation of a story for a fictional character and not Melanie themself, "Death" is about one of her friends, "Spider Web" and "Womb" are about society, while her "Portals" album pertains directly to herself it is also relatable to general public, and she made two other albums that were mostly about her friends, society, politics, and other people's traumas. Doesn't sound narcissistic to me. Others say that she glorifies mental disorders and trauma because her family life was good. However, they negate that she based certain traumatic songs on her friends with their consent, she has her own mental disorders and disabilities, and she went through bullying (good family life doesn't mean good childhood). I say this all in case you think or see comments that think that Melanie creating a fictional character in a world of trauma is a problem. Melanie has helped many people through her music, including myself through my own trauma, so her fiction was some of my reality and helped my healing. Anyone who intends and does good, in my opinion, should be respected. Concluding my third point, yes, Crybaby is a fictional character with fictional scenarios, but not all of it is fiction. That is what causes people to either be mostly confused with Melanie or dislike her. I hope you will not come to dislike her or think that she was deceitful based on this information. She's just one person trying to make music to help and heal as best as she can. She's not always perfect at it, but they do their best and there are many people they have helped. I hope this immense amount of information helps in some way and hopefully is not overbearing.

    When Melanie says “he’s still dead when ur done with the bottle” I think she means that basically crybaby’s mom had a huge break down which caused her to kill her absent husband (who was cheating and in an affair) then feels regret because she still loves him therefore she is getting drunk to forget the tragic event she had made. Hope this helps anyone who is still confused what she meant by that
