In my criminology class, I was taught that anti, psycho, and socio are all the same exact thing, but psycho tells you if their behavior is biological and socio tells you if their behavior was developed through environmental experience. Anti is what the person truly has either way. Maybe that's just the way criminologists classify it to make it easier on themselves but I figured it couldn't be that simple...

Kaye S. ASPD is the condition. Psychopathy in the 60s became Sociopathy in the 90s and ASPD in the DSM 5. There are biological AND environmental factors involved but no certain cause and neither psycho- or socio- are clinical terms anymore and there is no consensus about what either term means. Most say psycho- is more violent and socio- more manipulative, but this video even gets it wrong so you can see how confusing it is.

Every time I read or watch something on the Net about sociopathy/psychopathy, there are contradictions and outright incorrect info. I guess they all do not learn the same stuff in medical school. And that is scary. Read books, lots and lots of recently published books written by experts. "Without Conscience" by Robert Hare is great. "The Science of Evil" by Simon Baron-Cohen is even better.

As someone who studies psychology and behaviour, thank you! I can not tell you how often I hear/see people speaking about psychopaths and sociopaths even though they are very misinformed. It makes me happy to see sources that actually have the right information.

Thank you so much! I drew APD for a report in Abnormal Psych, and my Professor is brilliant but he’s an old timer, and thinks sociopaths and psychopaths are synonymous, so I wanted to bring some new info (with sources of course) into the class discussion. Very concise. I appreciate it! ✌️

I know someone will probably correct me on this, but psychopathy simply sounds like a mixture of some of the traits from anti-social and narcissistic personality disorders together...

In very simple terms, sociopaths behave like children, while psychopaths behave like adults. A sociopath is "innocently" harmful or reckless. YOU, as the third party, have a clear understanding that their actions are either "right" or "wrong," but the sociopath doesn't. Psychopaths, on the other hand, are capable of emulating those around them, just like "healthy" adults do. They don't necessarily hold the same values of "right" and "wrong" as the third party observer does, however, the psychopath is aware of what the observer expects and will accept in a given situation. The actions of a psychopath are based on the expected emotions of those around them, whereas a sociopath never considers the emotions of others. Sociopathy is passionate, whereas psychopathy is logistical. I don't see why the debate between the two continues. Did they do something impulsively without forethought? Then they're a sociopath. Did they conceive of and carefully execute a plan over days, months or years? Then they're a psychopath.

Antisocial personality disorder very literally describes regularized method of social participation, whilst psychopathy includes means to ends, which is categorically different. There is a clear limited intersection.

Thank you very much sir for the material. The psychopathy doesn't always manifest into factor 2 traits. This depends on upbringing. This would be a pro social psychopath but yes, a primary can have factor 2 traits.

Can you do a video on Depression & the somatic symptoms? I know it's similar to videos you've made in the past, but mainly regarding how do people with Depression talk. Word count in conversation decreases, lack of eye contact, etc. In a clinical setting what are the most telling physical responses that a Depressed person may give that is very telling.

I read - psychiatric notation - that psychopathy was just and old term used, then later sociopathy and now/today we use ASPD as the official terminology when describing dyssocial personality disorders. Also I noticed certain traits you described in factor 1 and 2 with their facets. Some of these traits also overlap each other across both factors and facets, and can therefore not exclusively be limited facets to factors, hence why some professionals doesn’t use psychopathy and sociopathy in their terminology today but rather use the diagnose ASPD with multiple crossover facets to distinguish the specific individual analysed.

what is the difference between factor to psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder also why do most researchers not use the term Socio path anymore

As far as psychopathy I refused the test. I did however go through the MMPI, extensive interviewing and inkblot. They diagnosed me with antisocial personality disorder and recommended the PCLR at which point I withdrew my consent for testing. I was also in a forensic setting during this time and soon after released. I felt if I had scored high enough on the PCLR it would effect my consideration for release.

I am an addiction counselor working in a methadone treatment center. I am here educating myself for a session with my antisocial personality disorder. The patient uses profanity because he has free speech in America, but he respects me and he listens to me. I want to help him understand the norms of society and pray I possess the skills. He is one of several substance abusers I work with. Bipolar I and schizophrenia are my other two challenges. I am so...I keep a DSM-5 at work and one at home.

I am a person with apsd, it depends on how severe the disorder is to determine how dangerous the person is, I hate people, I need them around me though in order to do things in my life such as work and thrive so I prefer them to be there, that’s not the same for everyone, but it’s common.

I think of it as antisocial personality disorder being broken down into which factors and facets that are the strongest in the person to be the dominant area of disfunction. Such as interpersonal or social. Then you may notice the symptoms or signs with cluster B. Histrionic, BPD, ect. Idk just my thoughts or opinion so far. Thank you Dr Grande.

Thanks I'm forever trying to explain to people that ASPD is not automatically psychopathy . As someone dx with Aspd if I ever mention it people assume I'm suddenly going to kill them (thanks Hollywood) or try to con them. I'm relatively self aware and I don't spend every hour of the day hunting for others to hurt lol. So thank you for informing others of the distinct differences. Personally after years of researching the subject I'm inclined to view Aspd as more of a spectrum especially when using the FFM

What does it mean when you’re cold/emotionally detached from everything and everyone in life but non violent although capable of and often experiences rage and anger?

Dr. Todd, I have a question. I'm studying psychology in school now, and I'm doing the paper on antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy. My question is, that they are different disorders, so why is psychopathy not exactly listed as a disorder in the DSM-5? It's only listed as a specifier antisocial personality disorder. I guess I'm just a bit confused, why is this, when there are key differences between the two?

I think I might have antisocial personality disorder and i'm finally gnna go to therapy after being recommended by a professional. I don't understand sadness, how to act sad, or why people get so worked up with emotions at all. If i'm being honest I've never felt love before only excitement that people would give me sex, food, money, and relief for my short term necessities and goals. I have a girlfirend of 4 years now and I couldnt once say that I actually felt something inside of me before I could say is love. I'm curious where this therapy will go and how long i'll be able to put up with it before he finds out what I've told an actual therapist in the past about a horrible crime i've comitted but i'm less worried as i've gotten past that with my psychiatrist of 6 years now and other therapist that i one offed for even trying to snitch on me.

He will cry over a woman who dumped him for cheating and lying, but it’s really all about him. His show of remorse and self-awareness is short-lived and basically attention seeking. He ensnares women who think they can help save him. He’s a pathological liar and has libeled one of his targeted victims. Said she was a crazy suicidal stalker. Now he’s posting how wonderful she was (after she blocked him). Would this likely be a psychopath?

Dr. Grande, could you do a video explaining how cognitive empathy actually works? Does it mean that when person A sees person B crying, person A understands that person B is upset? Or if they hear someone's voice rise in volume they know that the person is getting upset? Or if they see smell the person sweating in an interview they know the person is nervous? Conversely, affective empathy is automatic and person A feels how it must be to walk in person B's shoes at that particular moment? Also, could you explain ego dystonic in more depth? I'm confused because I thought that, in general, people with ASPD don't care if they hurt anyone or at least don't have remorse for it. If they care about how their behavior affects others, how can they so easily lie and manipulate others?

Lisa LPH you seem to be rather confused about the empathy/sympathy/remorse/emotions aspect of this diagnosis. You asked if the person would be able to understand that another person is upset when they see them crying. Of course they can *understand* that. Of course they can understand that someone is getting upset or angry when they hear someone’s voice rising in volume. Having no Empathy doesn’t mean you’re not capable of being able to know that 1+1=2. Why would someone with ASPD not be able to know “a person crying = a person is upset” ? ASPD doesn’t mean a person is stupid lol. It just means “I see that you’re upset/angry but I don’t relate to that reason/feeling/emotion”. That’s essentially COGNITIVE empathy. For instance, If I see you fall and break your leg, I’m going to be able to understand that it hurts you but I’m not going to feel it for myself. It’s the same type of process with emotions and feelings.

So can a psychopath be born ? I know that’s a very debated topic but I’ve seen so many videos of professionals who claim that there’s science to back up the claim. What’s your insight on that ?

Im pretty sure i was an ASD sense i was kid around age 6.I violated allot of social norms (i stole allot of stuff like money,toys and phones and i watched tv allot exp horror movies and porn ) ,i lied allot,i was impulsive,aggressive,irresponsible,and lack of remorse,and other kids would avoid me or if i would have friends they would neglect me in short period of times,i would be teased in school by other children cuz i was different and when i got pissed i would answer with a punch or a scratch to a face or an eye with my nail's and i still dont feel regret about it at all,at one point i pointed a knife at my sister and i was planing to murder my father for moths until my mom found out and stop me.I started smoking and drinking at age 16 and i used drugs when i was 17.Just now at age 28 i realized what was going on with me.I never knew about this so i went to a Psychiatrist to do a Psycho Pass test ( cuz my close friends made me do it.One has Autism and ADD, and the other one is High in OCD and is a Narcissist and i was bored ) and yea i got a High Impulsive ,High Aggression and im a High functioning Sociopath,she even laughed when she got relief'ed after she told me im not a Psychopath but her aura changed after my test was done,i could see her fear and feel it ,but i just stayed cool around her ,i guess its not easy to think one sec that the person is normal on a look of an eye and then change to scare mode but what do i know,its a normal reaction of ppl i guess,but it was amusing to me to see her like that ) .Im married of course but i have no kids just yet.I try to live like everyone else on this planet but its hard when u have ASD.I dont have empathy for others feelings and i dont get attached to anyone thanks to my alcoholic Narcissistic parents.I hate ppl and its rare that i find someone to be close to but even then i get bored fast from them or they neglect me cuz they notice im off ,but i dont blame them.If something irritates me i break and throw stuff around like chairs ,laptop keyboard and breaking tables,i get aggressive in seconds if someone raise their voice at me and i attack them full force.The only emotion i exp is anger and sometimes sadness but mostly i feel empty inside.I dont like sharing this with ppl but i guess i made my point of what i am really.I didnt kill anyone yet and lets hope it stays that way.Thanks for this video Dr.Todd.

I hope things are looking a bit better for you. Just so you know you’re not on your own in this. I’d put good money on the fact that a lot of people around you probably feel some or many of the things you do too. You’re not off, so don’t let that be an excuse for people to treat you poorly. If you’ve been good to them and they dish you back shit, walk away and don’t look back. You sound like you know well the difference btw wrong and right and you clearly can see where u go wrong, so that’s the battle pretty much won. Many people can’t see or won’t ever admit to the horrendous way they treat others & will defend to the death & take it to the grave ever before they can begin to admit it to anyone, regardless of what it costs their victims. I know lots of these so called “healthy” people. So what I’m saying is that ur already miles ahead IMO. Acknowledgement means u can change if you want to. Some don’t get that chance I guess, or even want it. I have problems w my anger too sometimes. I get overwhelmed with emotions when certain people close to me have walked over me like a doormat. Sadly because I’ll yell or scream when they’ve tried to lie to my face or gaslight or refuse to take responsibility/reach common ground, they end up being innocent victims and I end up crucified. But I cross the line when I’ve raised my voice or slam doors in terms of what’s acceptable in society today. So in that sense I suppose I don’t feel remorse for lashing out. I know it’s wrong but my motivation for changing isn’t because I’m sorry for them. I know I shouldn’t do it but I also don’t think people should be allowed to get away with manipulating and lying to otherwise honest people so they can get away with hurting others. I’m sick of letting assholes get away with being assholes and the longer I keep reverting back to anger, the longer they get to be wolves in sheep’s clothing. Anyways just letting u know I feel you & that I relate to a lot of what you said & I’m not diagnosed and supposedly “normal/healthy” according to several psychs I’ve seen. I don’t think I’m off, but I know where I’m going wrong and sure the motivation for change might be wrong but at least I’m trying. I now believe that “normal” doesn’t exist so don’t let anyone else make you feel inferior because believe they themselves superior. Character deficiency/personality disorder, same shit, different day IMO

Would you say that some of the psychopathic traits, such as ruthlessness and fearlessness, are things that I am born with? I will need to utilize certain combinations of personality characteristics which might make me higher up the psychopathic spectrum than average…

So, if my brother has nearly every characteristic on that list of psychopathic traits, does that mean that he has psychopathy? He's in his early thirties. Can he outgrow it?

LL T it means that he may be a psychopath. You don’t outgrow it. Psychopaths are not all like they are portrayed in movies. Many with ASPD and psychopathy run businesses, are doctors, teachers, etc...they just have issues that should be dealt with in order to maintain relationships, etc...

I keep scoring high for Sociopathy but I don't lie and I don't believe in materialism. In my psyche report it said I understand my effect on people but I simple don't care, its true but their is complexity to it like I don't believe humans are experimental, they animals and a very destructive one at that, also I always raise baby orphan animals at great cost and inconvenience to myself just because I feel some sort of care or duty to, I love an underdog having said that when I was young and was in some distress due to home life and such I have hurt them in sadistic way despite really loving animals even as a child. What is up with me? Am I a sociopath? I don't really care to hurt anyone in fact I help people at my own cost sometimes but I do not think believe in some human subjective morality as universe or devine.

Why cant psychopathy be diagnosed as such?

My son has schizophrenia and he shows all of these symptoms yet he only gets treated for schizophrenia ..why is that ?

Wayne Taylor you clearly misunderstood literally everything. Psychopathy = ANTI SOCIAL PERSONALITY DISORDER. That’s the DIAGNOSIS that if falls under in the DSM.

Beautiful Explosives this is not correct. ASPD is the DSM-5 diagnosis. It can be used in any clinical setting. Psychopathy, factor 1 or 2, is a determination made from using a specific scoring tool (e.g., PCL-R) in a forensic setting.

Alcaeus89 No. The 1-3% of the population diagnosed were mostly found in prison, but most with it don't go to prison. Most laws are written to criminalize lifestyles so the prison industry can make money from government handouts and slave labor, not to protect anyone.

This video is most instructive and interesting. I respect your scientific research and do not disagree, good doctor. However, I am but a simple man, and must live by simple rules (right or wrong -- it doesn't matter): 1. Psychopaths are born that way. 2. Sociopaths are the ones made that way by circumstance. 3. Narcissists are like pathetic solipsist junior-grade psycho/sociopaths. 4. These aspd cluster/spectrum types are dangerous and destructive to regular people. 5. These people are hard to spot for ordinary folks. 6. Recognise that these types are on a graded scale and can be "better" or "worse." 7. When it is discovered that you are dealing with one of these types, one must completely divest and dissociate as soon as possible. 8. These people cannot be cured, but are able to be taught rigid discipline as youths, and so can be potentially "saved" from being absolute monsters as adults. 9. Hare Checklist. 10. Don't lose sight of the forest for the trees...Don't disregard each tree just because it's in a forest.

Interesting. I've wondered why Trump is not characterized as having Pychopathy rather than NCP. My assumption is that NCP sounds a little more 'polite' so mental health practitioners are more likely to use that phrase rather than the 'loaded' one that clearly applies.

Author, my younger brother thomas is psychopath tried killing me, as i battling my demons and went on to write books and help others, spiritual person I am as you see from channel, we don’t turn out bad.... i’m made it x.I went onto write best selling books, Cry Silent Tea and a second book Cry Myself to Sleep. Nick Marquez yes. Look at his audacity. But it is ok as self-promotion is a mild thing compared to crimes like rape and murder which sociopaths can do. BTW, it is true, Harper Collins did publish his books and he is indeed easy to Google.

Antisocial Personality Disorder, Ohhh great! just as I thought, I also have an Hon/Degree in cognitive psychology, and worked out our Next door Neighbour has "Antisocial Personality Disorder" , he ticks (all the boxes of citria (A) ), what's worse he has targeted us/me for destruction, so to speak. He puts cameras pointing at our house, leaves porch lights on all night, hoping it will cause us problems, spayed over our wall with (roundup) and killed a tree, Lie without a blink to your face. goes around other here, and attempts to turn everyone again ,e/us with utter lies. He also wants to get the police to take my Guns away, so he came around raging in a temper at 70 years old, shouting at my wife, kicked her out the way and she is 75 years old, and forced his way onto our property, told me to go and get my POP, POP, and shoot him, " I told him he would be killed if I did" he said He did not care, as I would do 25 years, for doing it. The guy is completely insane. I ended up getting the police to him, who made him sign a document stating, " anymore complaints from us about him and his aggression behaviour and he will be in serious trouble" ! Problem is these types have no regard for self others, and authority, so I am half expecting at some point, he will stew and boil up again. and do something else. If we ignore them/him completely, that makes him rage, as we will will not engage him or speak at all to him or his equally nervous wreck of a wife, we treat him like they are Ghosts. This seems to make him worse, as he cannot get at us, so to speak. Problem is he is liable to keep upping the anti, which could leave some very serious end results, like death or serious injury; This is my concern, as he stews, and schemes, plans ways to antagonise, and aggravate. I am not moving because of him, but as they say, if someone crosses that red line, and he does something like this again, I am liable to set our guard Dogs on him, and they WILL make a real mess of him. After all, who on earth barges a 75 year old woman out the way, in an irrational rage, forces entry onto your property, in shorts, wearing flip flops, knowing the woman's husband has an AK47, and several semi auto pistols, and two huge 160lb guards dogs on the property, WHO would do that but an irrational insane lunatic. I am worried because they do not know when to stop, and unless you kill them or they kill you, it may just keep escalating, and I do not want things to get that far, but as they say he seems half intent on driving it in this direction! These types should NOT be permitted in a normal social community, they are the cancer generating disharmony, trouble, and problems. But today the so called Nanny state seems to be increasingly throwing those who they profess to protect under the bus, as it were! Leaving us to deal with it, and when we do, your the criminal. But, I have said for a long time now, the system is run by utter psychopaths on some twisted self destruct mission for everything, everybody, and theirselves !
