The answer as to why suffering is needed in order to be happy is simple, if you remain in a single state long enough then you become numb to it. It's only in the presence of contrast that we can recognize anything. If the only state of being is happiness then what exactly is happiness? You have nothing to compare it to. It would cease being happiness altogether

You only really need the context. To suffer once is to give you the ability to contrast good from bad. Even just pondering what suffering would be like is enough to understand that you would prefer to have something than not. You need not live in a world of which constantly creates immense suffering repeatedly. It's also reading too hard into it. If there was some kind of purpose or reason behind the universe being the way it is, there wouldn't be people at the lowest end of society, experiencing very little other than suffering, abuse and poverty only to die on the street from exposure, drugs or violent crime. One would expect a world with purpose and order, that those people would get to experience the highest of highs also, so that your comparison world makes sense, but they do not. So I disagree that we need to have terrible things in order to appreciate the good. Even just the difference between something that is a little good, to a little better provides enough context. You don't need to go through the loss of a family member to be able to conceptualise what that experience would feel like. Our brains are easily able to grasp that concept and simulate it for us within itself without the need to endure it in reality. So I think that's entirely false

When my broken wrist heals I am overjoyed, but that quickly fades & the wrist injury is forgotten. There’s even plenty of people who abuse it who don’t face practically psychosis. I agree with Joe on a lot of things, but I disagree with his take here. It is true that SOME people can take it and have these kinds of effects that make them more narcissistic or violent. 05:00 This is such a silly way of looking at things. Why do americans always strive to just "be happy"? I feel like this constant pursuit of happiness without a cause is a relatively modern and culturally specific ideal. Happiness is for children, meaning that untroubled joy often found in youth is not enough to satisfy the complex emotional needs of adulthood. True depth and richness in life come from embracing a full spectrum of experiences, including those that challenge us. Pain, after all, is one of the most profound, pure, genuine and raw human emotions.

@@shawntailor5485 that's exactly how it started with me. With weed and then got prescribed Adderall, then has back surgery and was prescribed Valium and oxycodone and hydrocodone for months. Then later on in life I figured oh I have done Adderall/amphetamine and was fine I can try cocaine, then moved to being around people doing harder shit and then I tried out meth. After that I try heroin. 8 years later I am a full on addict to heroin/fent/Xanax and homeless. Now I have three years clean but it all started with taking small dose Adderall I was prescribed and smoking weed lol. It happen to so many people I know too. Everything starts small just like this guy is talking about. And if he enjoys it and thinks about it as beneficial since he can work easier then he already is developing the justifications and rationalizations to use any form of speed/drugs. Be careful out there man. You don't notice it until it's way too late

I had an exgirlfriend who eventually got charged for shooting at me. Turns out it went way further than that day. She was planning it for some time. The detectives said she came close to killing me in my sleep twice but was worried her 22 wouldn't do it. Was looking up all kinds of fucked up shit. She was angry because you could tell the writing was in the sand when I caught her cheating the last time around I started falling out of love with her. I should have left the and many times before, but I didn't think lives were at risk. She should have left too. I'm not perfect but I'm above average in being a good human being. Sometimes my moral red-lines in life bothered her. She thought I was trying to show off. No. I'm just Catholic and believe in living a decent moral life. She wanted a thug street-type like her exes. However, I took good care of us and she didn't want someone else to have that or me. She was constantly projecting and accusing me of being unfaithful. I should have seen all the red flags. Why she thought murdering me was a solution I'll never know. Been single since too. Major trust issues. I'd rather be alone and safe.

The question "can you be convicted without a body" made me think. There's a film with Anthony Hopkins where he murdered he's wife, admitted he did it but it was up to a detective to prove it. Irl if there's no dna evidence, no cctv footage, no physical evidence of any kind but you confess! Can you be found guilty in a court of law? 🤔

Good can not exist without bad. Happy without sad. You would have no concept of happiness if you didnt know sadness. Emotions are the biggest strength and the biggest weakness in humans period. Emotionless and logical thinking always prevail over the feeling squad. Thats why psychopaths are successful. But its a pandoras box, we can never feel love and joy then go back and give it up. It would be a tragedy. But think about how many decisions emotions influence in society.... its sad.
