Psychedelics in Christian Art

For many years now, people have noticed psychedelic mushrooms throughout religious art. Often in scenes from the Bible. In fact, across medieval artworks, you’ll seem to find these “mushrooms” everywhere. Like the Plaincourault fresco, that 12th-century wall painting of the Garden of Eden. It’s a bizarre image, the tree of knowledge looks like a giant fungus. Then there are the visions of Hildegard von Bingen with divine cities in the sky and incomprehensible beings that take the appearance of angels. Others are abstract geometric shapes: rings, circlets, and sacred diagrams.
Could artworks like these reveal hidden truths about Christianity and psychedelics? Or is there another explanation? One that’s more rooted in the weird world of medieval illustration. Welcome to Strange Christian Art. This Episode: Psychedelics.
Seems like my previous video on Biblical Demons went down a treat. Glad you all enjoyed it. More religion/mythology content to come! Thank you for 716k subscribers.

I’m so glad you mentioned Hildegard of Bingen. Stories like hers of Christian mystics and their visions fascinate me. I think some others that are worth mentioning are Julian of Norwich, Catherine of Sienna, Margery Kempe, and Teresa of Avila. Some of the visions they describe are wild and full of strange imagery.

They also cared so much about pagans following there own religion that they burned down there churches and built there own on the pagan's holy sites and made holidays to convert them easier to christian while also killing the heathens. Also can't forget pilgrims forcing native Americans to become Christian and the African slaves.

I also get the connections that you’re making - Pagans were killed for not worshipping properly, one could draw these connections to psychedelic drugs. Sure, plausible. My point remains: I don’t think anyone in the middle ages was crusading to stop people from eating trippy field mushrooms. Even indirectly, this is 20th century drug-hysteria logic applied to a totally different time.

On the topic of Bingen and Bosch's vision, I think people often forget it is the *brain* that creates psychedelic experiences and not the substances. While people typically need chemicals to disrupt their brain into making them, people have been having "soul revealing" (etymological meaning of psychedelic) visions for all of human history. These tend to be less fractal/complex, but it's worth noting we don't need mushrooms to experience altered states of consciousness

Having ADHD/austism helps me to have psychedelic experiences... I have an insanely active imagination, as in I’m able to picture things extremely vividly, I have quite detailed dreams, and I have synesthesia! It can be a lot sometimes, but I love what my brain is capable of. It was viewed as a disadvantage by my teachers/parents/peers, but I always loved it. It felt like a precious gift. Once I was able to experiment with psychedelics, I was made certain that those qualities WERE in fact gifts, and it made me so certain that our dreams & our spirituality are all connected. I felt so close to “god” & so loved by them. I just know the stuff we see behind our eyes (or with our third eyes) is spiritually important. Psychedelics just enhance that which we already know.

I'm happy this channel came back! For my explanation, in my own perspective, many artist interprets several times about "the Tree", Bosch's Tree in The Garden of Earthly Delights is a dragon's blood with some grapes and leaves that look like bread(symbolizes the blood and body of Christ), and medieval culture is some what weird, based on Faith than Reason, like some of Stange Christian Arts, mostly they took something from the ancient and converted into their Christian Culture(eg. Three Headed Jesus and Hellmouths) and some are misinterpreted about animals like elephants carrying a castle, I could respect the Medievals though and their minds are now tried to evolved to Renaissance...For Hildegard von Bingen, I read in the books and art about God's Visions in Four Seasons before this video is release, according to the book she's a abbess and mystic.

Amazing video as always ! On of the best channels around. Something interesting is I can absolutely say from experience that painting at 6:38 by Hildegard Von Bingen looks exactly like a DMT trip. Like I have seen that or something extremely similar. I think many other people who have experienced DMT would say the same.

I do like your videos, very much... I've been fascinated with mystical / medieval art ever since I saw pictures of alleged sea creatures, as a child, the 'Sea Bishop' especially... One psychedelic influence that might have been quite common, and grossly misunderstood in the absence of formalized science, is moulds in food or in dwellings, due to poor conditions of upkeep and little environmental control. Somebody quite devout, squirreling themself away in an unhealthy environment or undertaking extremes of diet / consumption as a part of their faith, might be given to hallucinations and delirium which they then record as divine enlightenment.

great video, as an art history student I appreciate your methodical and respectful approach to this topic that is absolutely worth talking about even though some scholars would scoff and call it nonsense. medieval art is super interesting and the iconography is fascinating. I love bestiaries but my personal favourites are the strange little creatures that crawl in the margins of illuminated books. I can see why someone who had never seen an elephant but had heard rumours about it would draw it like that, but nothing can explain why so many knights are fighting giant snails (and losing). for those interested in the very history of psychedelics in ancient religion, look to the east and much earlier in our history, in a region that would later be called Persia. it is pretty much accepted that people in this region consumed ayahuasca, an extremely potent psychedelic, and that it was in some way related to spirituality. the cult of the sun god Marduk left interesting petroglyphs where the god is represented as a humanoid with a head made of concentric circles, rays, or some shape that looks an awful lot like the ayahuasca plant. I’m not saying that’s what it is, but it is a theory that serious experts in the field consider at least possible. in any case, this art is may be from where originates the tradition of putting a nimbus to signal divinity or sainthood. this part of the world is also where the proto-indo-european mythology would take the form of Zoroastrianism which is understood as somewhat of an indirect ancestor to the abrahamic faiths. in this way, christian art just might have some links to psychedelics after all, but not so directly.

Hildegard von Bingen and several other of the better known Christian mystics likely had one or more Neurological conditions, or Synesthesia. I have what would have been called 'visions' in an earlier age, but I'm Epileptic. Before I was diagnosed in my early 30s my experiences were extremely difficult to explain, especially because my seizures just look like I'm daydreaming from the outside. Unless you knew I was having a seizure, you wouldn't know it was actually happening.

Just wow. Thanks for the amazing video / mind opener. The ai art seems amazing, leave it to amazing people to bring out the best of the AI. :) I wouldn't rule out mushrooms at all. Where there are trees/forests, there are often mushrooms. When the devil/fire comes there can be some different mushrooms. Great art always aspires to reach a huge audience. Having multiple meanings is more often intentional than not. So basically one take is, religion was propaganda to teach us that paradise is your current state of mind, and eating the forbidden fruit does grant you temporary knowledge, but then makes you go out of paradise, and you cannot come back. Millenia old "don't do drugs kids, it's bad for ya".
