Psychedelics Are Now Legal in Australia-With a Catch

Australia is a nation known for its conservative attitude towards drugs. So the approval of psychedelics for use in psychotherapy in 2023 came as a shock. Maybe more shocking was who got it done - an opera singer and her former investment banker husband, who kicked up no shortage of controversy along the way.

That Stephen Bright is so short sighted. The reason people die from MDMA is because contamination or dehydration. Both things that would be solved if the compound was decriminalized and regulated, advocating to keep it criminalized only ensures more and more people will die trying to experience this treatment.

Most ppl who are hurt by MDMA actually overdose on water by consuming too much, im not sure if that translates to deaths also though. As far as contamination I don't think it's fair to even call that dying from MDMA. Realty is all traditional psychdelics are safer than alcohol and cigerettes though so these arguments about harm are so ridiculous.

Still trying to get my hands on some more without getting busted for importing what might be seen as "distribution amounts" of around 20 units. When the government bans vapes but not cigarettes and allows alcohol while banning dope and LSD - two of the least conflict inducing recreational drugs I can think of, you really get the impression that they don't actually care about our health as much as they claim that's the reason for the ban in the first place.

There is a serious problem with this media outlook and info being put out by this video and also misleading title. MDMA keeps being repeated in tandem with the research and use of Psilocybin which is incorrect. theyre 2 completely different drugs and also used for 2 completely different mental health related things so shouldnt they be reported as such, individually? and not combined into 1 video? People are gunna get confused. For example: mentioning people dying off of the use of MDMA in festivals and then talking about psilocybin research at 4:00 this is improper reporting and shows lack of knowledge; in context with this comment: there has not been a single known reported death from psilocybin mushroom use. There is no clear differentiation between the 2 by the journalist which is my issue.

I did em when i was 18 or 19 yrs old and till this day the wisdom, compassion, love, insight, presence, and patience I came to know then still guides me in my thoughts and actions with myself and with others. From what i understand it wasn't as grand and sweeping for my friends. But i think there's something to be said about the fact that forests/woods nature has always been my happy place. Of course, when people take it in unsupervised situations, not knowing what they're doing and not being mindful, these things can be dangerous or even lethal.. People should drink plenty when they use xtc/mdma, no other drugs, and there should be an experienced (and ideally sober) friend present to keep an eye out. Many people know this, but not everyone. Including apparently that guy. We don't know how it works? We don't know how alcohol and caffeine work either, not _really_ . We should be mindful and careful about this, the medicine is powerful. If something is heavily regulated and obscenely expensive then it is not 'legal'. It might be an adjustment of pre-existing legislation but it's still legislation. It's still the government deciding the degree to which an individual may have access to, a relationship with and experience of the natural world. It is still a group of people deciding under what circumstances an individual may have this experience, and surprise, surprise! - it's within a clinical setting, with someone who doesn't really care about them, with large sums of money involved! Well, what better way to achieve an understanding of one's own integral part in the tapestry of the universe that facilitates the healing of psychological trauma than within the confines of a heavily regulated capitalist infrastructure? And so the tyranny continues.

They do need to have an assistant who has had significant experience with these molecules and understands the liminal spaces accessed to guide in such cases where deep trauma is amplified or full blown awakenings occur. An empathetic or compassionate psychiatrist is not sufficient to avert a spiritual awakening becoming a spiritual crisis.

You've noticed who will be given the power to prescribe these , and that they aren't necessarily all trustworthy. In fact this very odd legal change effectively enables psychiatrists to weaponize very powerful substances , right at a time when our state has taken a totalitarian turn, and when they have made plans for massive expansion of mental health incarceration and involuntary commitment. Remember the recent pattern of substances becoming compulsory in certain contexts as soon as they were allowed ( not even approved )? The AstroTurf designed to launder this very odd law change is nonsensical. People using these substances in traditional ways don't need reclassification or legalisation of the substances they just need decriminalisation . The changes beyond decriminalisation ( legalisation and reclassification) are mostly an enormous gift of power to psychiatrists , and effectively , by extension, to the state .

The approval of drugs in a democratic society should be transparent and include public input. While regulatory agencies play a crucial role in ensuring safety and efficacy, decisions that directly impact health must avoid secrecy. Health care is a fundamental right, and citizens should have the choice and knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about their health. If the process lacks transparency, it erodes trust and calls for advocacy and reform to ensure that health policies reflect the will and needs of the people. The situation with the Australian government, specifically the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), is concerning. Their frequent reversals on decisions-without clear explanations-raise questions about their priorities. Take medical cannabis, for example. While there has been some progress in legal access, recent changes have further restricted access and modes of consumption, reflecting a troubling trend. This suggests that health may not be the primary concern for our government; rather, it appears that profits and relationships with big businesses take precedence. It’s critical to remember that public officials are ultimately paid by the people, raising a fundamental question: who do they really serve? If their actions do not align with the well-being of the public, we must reconsider their accountability. History often shows power structures that resemble this dynamic, where rulers prioritise their interests over those they are meant to serve. As citizens, it’s imperative that we advocate for a healthcare system that genuinely prioritises our needs and choices, rather than corporate profits.

I don't know how you're saying that the only people caught off guard were mind medicine themselves; I recall CPD point courses being offered for psychedelic use in psychotherapy a couple years ago.

I hope people use it wisely. It can really change lives🧘🏼‍♀️ Anyone saying this is a drug, must realise we already use drugs to treat people. Except some of these drugs get prescribed for decades. My mother has been on antianxiety medication for 20 plus years

Yeah I’m in Australia and they are charging $20,000.00 for this kind of treatment so it’s not accessible to the people who really need it

@@dannii_LIt's part of a therapy 'package', so it's not $20k per dose, but with the additional mandatory specialists & therapists, the out of pocket expenses per patient for 6 to 9 months of MDMA assisted therapy ranges from $24k to $35k.

Mind Medicine Australia has organised a partnership with a Canadian medicine supplier and the cost of the medicines is minimal. The cost of the therapists makes up the bulk of the cost and may be covered by health insurance and other support for those in need. MMA also has a Patient Support Fund and 100% of donations into that help support those who cannot afford the upfront costs.
